Cousins! Family members, students and faculty of The University of Virginia are mourning after a tragic shooting claimed the life of 3 students!
According to NBC News, the incident took place late Sunday evening around 1030 PM, near Culbreth Road at a parking garage located behind the Drama building. Sadly a total of 3 student football players identified as D’Sean Perry, Devin Chandler and Lavel Davis Jr. have been confirmed as deceased and two additional individuals injured.
UVA President Jim Ryan said in a news conference held on Monday morning that D’Sean was a junior from Miami; Devin was in his second year as a student from Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Lavel was a third-year student from South Carolina.
Officials confirm that the shooting unraveled while on a school bus full of students returning from a field trip on November 13th. It has been stated that the trip was for students to attend a play in Washington, D.C. and was associated with a class. The gun man has been identified as 22-year-old student Christopher Darnell Jones, Jr.
A manhunt was conducted shortly after Christopher fled the scene in a Black SVU. He was warned of being both armed and dangerous; last seen wearing a burgundy jacket, blue jeans and red shoes. He is said to have been a former football player for the Virginia Cavaliers back in 2018.
Students were advised to take shelter in place as police officials searched campus grounds. An email was issued by Ryan to students in response to the tragic incident: “I am heartbroken to report that the shooting has resulted in three fatalities.”
“This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia,”
Christopher’s mother Margo Ellis was contacted following the series of events, and according to NBC News in a phone call Monday she said that her son has lived with his grandmother since he was 16. She explained that she didn’t know of his whereabouts or what might have caused him to behave in such a violent matter.
The identities of the two injured hospitalized victims have not been shared at this time. One individual has been described as being in good condition while the other person remains in critical condition, says Ryan .
It has been indicated by the UVA Office of Student Affairs that Christopher had been involved in a series of issues throughout the last few years. Apparently he had previously mentioned to an unaffiliated member of UVA that he had obtained a firearm. Reports read that the office flagged the incident to a multidisciplinary threat assessment team affiliated with UVA. “The office followed up with the person who flagged the concern and with Jones’ roommate who did not report seeing the weapon. It’s not clear how the matter was resolved.”
Also there is said to have been a hazing incident that occurred where Christopher was suspected of retaliation. However the case closed shortly after a witness failed to cooperate. It hasn’t been confirmed when the ordeal took place.
Then in 2021, Christopher is said to have been a part of an incident outside of Charlottesville surrounding a concealed weapon violation.
University of Virginia Police Chief Timothy Longo says that Christopher has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun in the alleged commission of a felony. He was captured just before 11am on Monday, approximately 75 miles away from UVA campus.
