NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade is opening up about how a simple routine check-up turned into a life-altering ordeal when he was diagnosed with cancer ultimately leading to 40% removal of his kidney!
In a recently debuted episode of his podcast ‘The Why With Dwyane Wade,’ the 43-year-old shared concerns he noticed that sparked his desire to check in on his health. Dwayne explained that he began undergoing stomach discomfort and a weaker urine stream.
“Why is my p— coming out slow? Why is my stream ain’t powerful? Why is it a little weak?” Dwyane recalled.
While admitting that he failed to keep up with regular medical checkups since retiring from the NBA back in 2019, Dwyane shared that he decided to schedule a full-body exam for himself after his dad underwent surgery.
During his exam doctors are said to have discovered a tumor on his right kidney.
“I didn’t go in for my kidneys,” Wade said. “But because I did the full-body scan, they saw something.”
According to reports from NBC News, doctors couldn’t conduct a biopsy of the tumor and that surgery was their only opportunity to properly confirm if the tumor was cancerous.
Dwyane says that nearly two years ago on December 18th, 2023 he had surgery to remove 40% of his kidney. He described the procedure as life-saving.
“Thank God that I did do the surgery, right?” Wade explained. “Because the tumor was cancerous.”
Dwyane also shared that post-operation was an overall challenging experience for him and his family.
“I think it was the first time my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak,” Wade, who is a father to five, admitted. “That moment was probably the weakest I’ve ever felt in my life.”
“One thing you never want to do as a man? You never want your family to see you weak,” he continued.
