The small community of Warrenton, N.C. is devastated after reports that a disabled man was left for dead for over eight hours. The man’s 55-year-old caretaker is now facing manslaughter charges in response.
On Tuesday, Aug. 20, Rogers Lee Inge Jr. called police to tell them “he was responsible for the death of an individual who was in his vehicle,” according to a news release obtained by the Charlotte Observer.
After Inge was instructed by the 911-operator to pull over at a local fire station, emergency responders attempted life saving measures on Dotarious Batts, a 22-year-old man with special needs, per the Charlotte Observer. Batts was pronounced dead.
Although Batts’ exact caused of death has yet to be determined, authorities suspect his death is directly linked to Inge leaving him in a parked car for several hours, according to ABC11.
Inge drove Batts to Cleveland High School before starting his second job as a janitor around 8 a.m. Batts was left in the parked car with the windows rolled up and the engine off, reports ABC11. Although Inge said he came back to check on Batts around 10 a.m., this was the last time the 22-year-old was seen alive.
Upon leaving his second job at 4:17p.m., Inge discovered Batts unresponsive in his car. That’s when he called 911. After Batts was pronounced dead at the fire station, Inge was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, according to the New York Post.
Residents in the area expressed their disbelief about the situation. Robin Berner said she’s “just disgusted that anyone can call themselves a caretaker and not take care of the person they are supposed to take care of.”
Another resident told ABC11, “They say he [Inge] was a janitor. Why couldn’t he [Batts] sit in the gym.” She continued, “Why couldn’t he sit in a classroom? School hasn’t started.”
A judge set his bail at $35,000. Detention records show Inge posted bond and has been released from jail.
