Cousins! Songstress Monica Denise is keeping it real as she discusses her feelings of being unappreciated within the music industry!

While appearing as a panelist in a live recorded episode of the podcast series “The Shop Uninterrupted” alongside Migos member Quavo and NBA Allstar Lou Williams, Monica reflected on her career in music and her personal motivation outside of public appraisal.

Despite being a beloved artist and arguably one of the greatest vocalists of our generation, Monica shared that she once believed that breaking certain records would reflect her career. She said the reality of minimal award show wins shifted things for her but didn’t shake her spirit.

“I was able to really enjoy my career because I didn’t have any expectations. I was not looking at stats, I was not worried about awards. I’m actually a person that for all the records I’ve broken, I really have never won any awards. I’m really the most forgotten, if you think about it.”

She continued in saying, ““I’m pretty much the underdog, but I sit very comfortably in it because I can still go where I want, do what I want, live how I want. But when I say that, I am often forgotten, I was hosting the Soul Train Awards, was nominated for 5, 3 of my songs in one category and still lost.”

“ But I went out to eat and kicked my regular sh*t after. I was not bothered because that’s not what I do it for…That is really my point when I say that oftentimes I’m forgotten in those spaces.”

According to Monica’s Wikipedia page, she has successfully earned multiple number-one spots on the Billboard charts for hit songs such as ‘Dont take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days),” “The Boy Is Mine” with Brandy, “So Gone,” and “Everything to Me.”

The 42-year-old has sold over five million records within her career and has also won a Grammy.

However, out of forty award nominations ranging from the BET awards, Billboard awards, Soul Train Awards, and more, Monica has only won a total of five times within her thirty-year career span.
