Over the last several days, violent riots have occurred in Britain as a result of far-right, anti-immigrant rhetoric. The level of damage is the worst the country has seen in over a decade, and it includes hotels housing migrants being set on fire, stores being destroyed, mosques being attacked and streets being flooded with racist chants and Nazi salutes.

Cities like Liverpool, Leeds and Belfast succumbed to pure chaos over the weekend. Muslims — and other minorities — are being mercilessly targeted and despite the brutal nature of these protests we should all be paying attention. The havoc was triggered when several children were stabbed last month in Southport, northwest England at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class.

The ghastly incident left three young girls dead and the country in mourning. Almost immediately, the far-right saw this as opportunity to spread disinformation about what happened, including the false assertion that the alleged attacker, a-17 year-old-boy, is a Muslim immigrant. However, authorities confirmed that the suspect was born in Britain.

This same kind of disinformation and racism has become emboldened in the states with former President Donald Trump — who is seeking the Oval Office once again in November — using his political power to denigrate and disempower immigrants. Under his presidency, hate crimes rose exponentially and people of color were treated with hostility and resentment.

If he manages to secure a second term, violence against this vulnerable population will undoubtedly increase. Despite U.K. police confirming the suspect was not an immigrant — he’s British and Black — that didn’t stop mobs from arranging violent gatherings through social media and messaging apps.

Minorities have also been violently attacked during the protests with almost 400 people being arrested. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who took office one month ago, has stated: “To those who feel targeted because of the color of your skin or your faith, I know how frightening this must be. I want you to know that this violent mob do not represent our country.”

However, England’s turmoil is sadly not unique and parallels America’s struggle with both propaganda and white supremacy.
