Authorities from the Detroit Police Department say an anonymous tip made to Child Protectives Services in June 2022 led them to search the home of 33-year-old Azuradee France. Authorities say they discovered the remains of a 3-year-old boy located in a freezer in the basement. During an interview with France, Detroit Police Chief James White said she admitted the remains were that of her son, Chayse, and explained how he ended up there.

In a press conference, Detroit detective Ben Biddle said France told him her son, who was blind, frustrated her one fatal evening in March 2022 because he wouldn’t eat. She told the detective she whipped him a belt and eventually kicked him in the chest. He then went to lay down but when she went to check on him the following morning, she told police he was unresponsive.

In fear her other two children would be taken away from her, Biddle said she decided not to call 911 but instead stuff the boy’s body in a bag and put it in the freezer. As her children cried over their sibling, France told them “she’d take care of it,” Biddle said. It wasn’t until three months later that police found him.

Assistant Wayne County Medical Examiner ruled the boy’s cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head.

Shortly after Chayse’s body was discovered, France was arrested. She told detectives she’d been abusing her son for several months leading up to his death, police said.

Last week, she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. The other charges of first-degree child abuse, torture and concealing a death were dismissed, per The Detroit News. In the terms of the plea agreement, France faces between 35 and 60 years in prison.
