From the moment they walked out onto the stage in Chicago in 2008 to introduce themselves as the first Black family to live in the White House, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have been #CoupleGoals. Our love for them only grew as we watched them do their jobs with grace – representing the country without being plagued by scandal while raising two well-adjusted children together.
But in the eight years since they left (sniff), our Forever First Lady has pulled back the curtain on her relationship with the former President, and in the process got some people to speculate that their marriage was over – or at least in deep trouble. After hearing some of Mrs. Obama’s candid comments about the couple’s disagreements and noticing her as a no-show at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and the inauguration of President Donald Trump, talk of an Obama divorce only got louder.
Although some think the time apart means something is wrong, Mrs. Obama argues that it just means she’s finally reclaiming her time.
In the latest episode of her IMO podcast, the former First Lady opened up, admitting that now that she is an empty nester and her days of representing the country are behind her, she finally feels empowered to put herself first.
“I mean at this stage in life for me, personally, is the first time I’ve been completely free,” Mrs. Obama told her guest, actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus. “There’s been a release where every choice I make is not about my husband, not about his career, not about my family, not about what my kids need or where they’re going, it’s totally about me.”
The former First Lady has done everything possible to combat the swirling rumors about trouble in her marriage, telling entrepreneur Steven Bartlett on his “The Diary of a CEO” podcast that there’s no way they could keep any issues a secret.
“If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it,” she said during their May interview.
Mrs. Obama went on to admit that marriage is hard but added that she and the former President are in it for the long haul.
“The beauty of my husband and our partnership is that neither one of us was ever really, ever going to quit at it, because that’s not who we are. And I know that about him. He knows that about me,” she said.
But for those in the back who didn’t hear that she and former President Obama are doing just fine, Mrs. Obama assured doubters that their absence from your social media timeline has more to do with their age and less to do with any cracks in their marriage.
“The fact that people don’t see me going out on a date with my husband sparks rumors of the end of our marriage,” she said during an appearance on the Wildcard podcast in June. “So we don’t Instagram every minute of our lives. We are 60. You just are not going to know what we’re doing every minute.”
Of course, we know people are going to continue to look for trouble, even if there isn’t anything to see. But maybe we should consider that Mrs. Obama’s freedom to do and say what’s on her mind is just a new chapter in an over 30-year love story.
