Now that the Juneteenth barbecues are over and Black Americans are done with their celebrating, we have time to respond to President Donald Trump’s reaction to the holiday. And boy, do folks online have all the smoke.

Trump took to Truth Social late Thursday (June 19) to declare how the country has, “Too many non-working holidays” that’s “costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed.” Although he didn’t name any specific holidays that needs to be cut, many people online say his 7 p.m. post on Juneteenth seemingly speaks for itself.

Many Black Americans predicted the holiday, which celebrates the day in 1865 when Union Major General Gordon Granger announced all enslaved people in Texas were free, would be next on the Trump chopping block. “Trump waits until a black-themed holiday to complain about holidays. That’s so on-brand,” @JohnnyLoveless wrote on X. “I’d be disappointed at this point if he didn’t take advantage of the opportunity to send a racial dogwhistle.”

It’s important to note Trump once championed Juneteenth — even celebrating the holiday every year of his first term. And this was before it became a federal holiday in 2021 following the murder of George Floyd.

But now, folks online feel like Trump has changed his tune.

“Racist Donald Trump is complaining about the cost of the Juneteenth holiday. After removing the Martin Luther King bust and Barack Obama’s portrait at the White House,” @whittler_e said. “He hates black people and just cannot keep himself from insulting us.”

@Edudarl called the president, “The Divider-in-chief” before adding he’s “Just pure evil.” But while many folks were pissed about Trump’s post, others offered suggestions for him to take into account.

“Take away Columbus Day too than TF!” @ATrueMenace1 tweeted. Another user had more holidays to add to Trump’s holiday hit list. “Christmas Day – We don’t do religious crap, Thanksgiving – AKA: White people spreading diseases day,
Columbus Day – Ugly bro is Spanish,” @LibTownMayor said.

Back in April, Trump announced he’s “reinstating Columbus Day under the same rules, dates, and locations, as it has had for all of the many decades before!” on Truth Social. Columbus Day is still a federal holiday, but in recent times, people also began celebrating Indigenous People’s Day to honor the genocide caused by Spanish conquistador Christopher Columbus quest to the Americas.

On TikTok, @blackbeltbabe pointed out what she called hypocrisy from Trump. “So the man that resulted in the murder of indigenous folks [Columbus] should be celebrated as a federal holiday and doesn’t waste time and money but the holiday that celebrities the ending of slavery and the start of reconstruction is a waste of time?”

Black Americans online also called out Black voters for Trump. “This is why I’ll never understand why a lot of blacks openly support or voted for him ain’t no f*****g way,” @_dre_day tweeted.

“I love to see Trump and all the haters salty about Juneteenth,” congressional candidate for Houston’s 18th District Isaiah Martin said.

Another user, @holybullies, added, “Black folks dont care what Donald Trump or his raggedy Administration thinks about Juneteenth. We still celebrating.”

Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown pleaded not guilty Friday to a charge related to the serious beating of a music producer with a bottle in a London nightclub in 2023.

Brown, 36, wearing a blue suit, white shirt and black-rimmed glasses, was arraigned in London’s Southwark Crown Court on one count of attempting to unlawfully and maliciously cause grievous bodily harm with intent.

Brown’s friend and fellow musician Omololu Akinlolu, 39, who performs under the name “Hoody Baby,” pleaded not guilty to the same charge.

Prosecutors previously said Brown and Akinlolu assaulted producer Abe Diaw at a bar in the Tape nightclub in the swanky Mayfair neighborhood in February 2023. Brown allegedly launched an unprovoked attack on Diaw and hit him several times with a bottle and then punched and kicked him.

The attack was caught on surveillance camera in front of a club full of people, prosecutors said.

Brown was originally charged with a single count of grievous bodily harm after his arrest in May, but prosecutors subsequently brought an indictment adding two counts: assault causing actual bodily harm and having an offensive weapon, a bottle.

When a court clerk asked Brown how he pleaded to the grievous bodily harm count, he replied: “Not guilty ma’am.”

Brown did not enter pleas on the additional counts and was ordered to return to court July 11 to face those charges after wrapping up the European leg of his world tour. His trial was scheduled for Oct. 26 2026.

The singer of “Go Crazy,” “Run It,” and “Kiss Kiss” was released last month on a 5 million-pound ($6.75 million) bail, which allowed him to start his “Breezy Bowl XX” tour earlier this month.

Following his release after almost a week in jail, Brown posted on Instagram: “FROM THE CAGE TO THE STAGE!!! BREEZYBOWL.”

Brown, who quickly rose to stardom as a teen in 2005, won his first Grammy for best R&B album in 2011 for “F.A.M.E.” and then earned his second in the same category for “11:11 (Deluxe)” earlier this year.

He is currently touring the U.K., playing this weekend in London with subsequent shows in Ireland, Scotland, France and Portugal. He returns to North America at the end of July to play Miami, before moving across the U.S. with a two-night stop in Toronto along the way.

Today is Juneteenth. It was celebrated for years by Black Southerners as the day we truly tasted freedom. Yeah, Abraham Lincoln said “four score and seven years ago” in Gettysburg, but the real ones know that Black folks were not free until Major General Gordon Granger ordered that all the slaves in Texas were to be set free.

White folks found out about Juneteenth after George Floyd, and that’s understandable. They aren’t invited to many cookouts. But Black folks who didn’t know about the holiday…what’s up with that?

 There is no excuse for Black folks to not have known and celebrated this day before President Joe Biden made it a national holiday. Have a seat. Let me be professorial and tell you why.

Juneteenth finds its origins in Texas, but Black folks from that state are not the only ones who celebrated it. Many Black people in other Southern states took up commemorating the day as early as 1909.

Then the Great Migration happened from roughly from 1910 to 1970. During that time, more than 6 million Black folks from the South moved North with the hope that would find less racism and more job opportunities in the Northeast, Midwest and Western parts of the United States. (Warmth of Other Suns is the definitive book that tells this story.)

These Black people may have left the South, but they did not leave their heritage. They brought their culture and traditions with them when they left, so it stands to reason that Black folks from as far West as Compton and as far East as New York City should at least have a working knowledge of what this holiday represents.

Throw into the mix that we are now connected to the entire world via the internet. There is NO reason for a Black person to not have heard of Juneteenth before 2021. (Especially when you take into consideration that Barbra-Rose Collins, a Democrat from Michigan, was the first to introduce legislation asking for it to be recognized by the U.S. federally)

Look, no shade to the Black folks who did not know Juneteenth was a thing before a geriatric white man told you it was. We forgive you. We also suspect that you put sugar in your grits.

That energy powered “Glory to Glory (A Revival for Spiritual and Devotional Art)” — part of Solange Knowles’ six-show “Eldorado Ballroom” series, which made its way to Houston after stops in New York City in 2023 and Los Angeles in 2024. Named after the historic Third Ward venue that once gave Black performers a stage when others wouldn’t, the series built toward this penultimate moment at one of Houston’s most prestigious halls.

Eldorado also moved through immersive experiences — from classical choral works inside the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, to experimental installations with DJs, theater, and film. Every night, the thread was the same: Black cultural mastery.

“’Glory to Glory’ is my personal pride and glory of the Eldorado Ballroom Series,” Solange told theGrio. “There are so many nuances in the expressions of devotion and praise between these incredible women musicians and composers.”

She emphasized the importance of works by Mary Lou Williams and gospel legend Twinkie Clark, among her favorites. Clark sat at her “throne” behind the piano, and Solange said without hesitation that Clark deserves mention alongside Beethoven and Bach in musical history.

At the end of the show, Solange bowed and honored the Clark Sisters — whose set included beloved “oldies but goodies.” The group has performed globally for nearly 60 years and remains the best-selling female gospel group of all time.

“What we’re bringing to the surface and forefront in this series is that Black women — and Black people, period — do it all,” said Grammy-nominated conductor Malcolm Merriweather, director of choral studies and associate professor at the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music.

Led by Merriweather, the choir performed sacred works by Mary Lou Williams, including “Black Christ of the Andes” and Mary Lou’s “Mass.” Pianist Artina McCain’s performances alongside the choir resurrected works that had been buried for decades. Williams — a jazz pianist, arranger and composer — died in 1981. After a spiritual awakening in the 1960s, she dedicated herself to the Catholic Church and began composing sacred music largely ignored by the classical world.

Merriweather’s choir brought the pieces back with controlled force and unity.

“I hear my mother and my aunts in this music — Black women from the South who didn’t have access to these platforms, but who created beauty anyway. That’s who I conduct for,” he said.

The conductor and singer noted the shift from the assumption of “old dead white men” in classical music: “This is different.”

Angélla Christie’s saxophone opened the evening, her tone cutting through the space like scripture. Johnson’s organ steadied the performance, and the legendary Clark Sisters — joined by a last-minute band of local Houston musicians — brought the crowd out of their seats for the rest of the night.

“More of the world needs to know about Mary Lou Williams’ works,” Solange told TheGrio. 

“Twinkie Clark is one of my favorite composers of all time and deserves to sit in the highest seat of American history as a composer and organist.”

The Eldorado Ballroom series was presented in partnership with Performing Arts Houston, which hosted the final performance at Jones Hall. The final performance in the Eldorado Ballroom series will be “Go Slow (Past And Present Futures From Alief to Abuja)” on June 20, a celebration of Houston’s Nigerian community through art, culture and music.

“Art has the power to record and share history and culture,” said Meg Booth, president and CEO of Performing Arts Houston. “Solange’s Eldorado Ballroom does just that… the series celebrates undersung stories of Black creativity and culture, centered around an iconic Houston landmark. Witnessing the community’s response has been deeply moving.”

Johnson added:

“Church folks frown on secular folks, and secular folks frown on church folks. But Solange is creating a platform where we can all come together and operate as one — which is what God called us to do.”

When Merriweather’s choir lifted the final note, when Christie breathed scripture through her saxophone, when Clark’s hands touched the keys and the audience rose, Solange’s vision was fully realized.

“These are my wildest dreams,” she said, hugging and bowing with the Clark Sisters.
