After Michaels grossly downplayed the scope of slavery in America during a recent television appearance, Hannah-Jones responded in a lengthy video posted to Instagram on Monday, breaking down just how central slavery was to every facet of the nation’s rise.
“I could not let that viral CNN clip of Jillian Michaels stand,” the scholar said at the top of the nearly eight-minute video.
“The times are far too serious and dangerous for us to lend our platforms to harmful nonsense,” she continued. “It’s simply irresponsible with everything that’s happening in this country, to have someone as credentialist as Jillian Michaels on a major network show legitimizing the erasure of our history.”
Hannah-Jones, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who created “The 1619 Project” who has spent her career reframing American history around the legacy of slavery, posted her rebuttal after Michaels appeared on CNN’s “NewsNight” with Abby Phillip last Thursday. During the appearance, Michaels argued, “less than 2% of white Americans owned slaves” and said, “slavery is thousands of years old.”
The fitness trainer added, “Every single thing is like, ‘Oh, no, no, no, this is all because white people are bad’ and that’s just not the truth.”
In her video, the award-winning author countered that framing slavery around the small percentage of white households that directly enslaved people obscures the reality that the entire nation’s wealth was built on the institution.
“This is how numbers and data, though technically true, can also be lies,” she said.
She detailed how cotton picked by enslaved labor represented half of all U.S. exports, fueling the country’s banks, factories, and institutions.
“Without slavery, our nation would be unrecognizable to us,” she said. “We cannot let them choose the parameters. We cannot let them choose the parameters of the conversation in order to obfuscate the truth.”
She highlighted how slavery’s reach extended far beyond the South, from the cotton Brooks Brothers used to tailor its suits to the New York Stock Exchange, which was established in part to finance slavery-dependent enterprises. Enslavement, she emphasized, enriched U.S. presidents, members of Congress, Supreme Court justices, and many of the men whose faces are stamped on American currency.
“All but one of the people on our cash currency engaged in African slavery,” she highlighted.
Hannah-Jones also drew a modern analogy to today’s tech giants, noting that while a very small percentage of Americans own companies like Apple, Meta, or Amazon, their influence is inescapable.
“It’s a tiny percentage. I’m doubtful if it’s even 1% of Americans,” she said. “And yet no one would credibly argue that social media companies are not ubiquitous across American life.”
Her message was clear: Even if only a small minority of white Americans were literally enslavers, the system of slavery was the beating heart of the U.S. economy and a society that sent half the country to war with the other to protect it.
“The times are too serious for us to proliferate a simplistic, unsophisticated, and childish understanding of the history of slavery,” she concluded.

A night of chaos at a Brooklyn lounge has left a family shattered after a West African male, was tragically gunned down while simply heading home!
Authorities say Amadou Diallo, who was not involved in the violence, was struck by gunfire outside Taste Lounge during a mass shooting that erupted early Sunday morning. Witnesses recalled scenes of panic as bullets tore through the Crown Heights neighborhood, leaving the 27 year old—a hardworking delivery worker—caught in the crossfire.
According to his family, Diallo was doing everything he could to build a life for himself in America.
“He was doing delivery, DoorDash and Uber,” his uncle told CBS News New York through a translator. “He was just going home. He was on his bike.”
Loved ones say Diallo’s story was one of resilience and hope. Having immigrated from West Africa, he dreamed of supporting his family and finding stability in the U.S. Instead, his life was cut short in the kind of senseless gun violence that has become all too familiar across New York City.
Police confirm at least two gunmen opened fire near the lounge, unleashing chaos that claimed Diallo’s life and left 14 others injured. Both suspects were fatally shot at the scene, reports ABC News.
Officials say at least 42 shots rang out.
As the investigation continues, the community is mourning yet another innocent soul lost to reckless gunfire. In his latest targeting of the Smithsonian, President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the nation’s museums are too “woke” and complained that they discuss “how bad Slavery was.”
“The Museums throughout Washington, but all over the Country are, essentially, the last remaining segment of “WOKE.” The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.
The president claimed that the museums—all a part of the Smithsonian Institution, which was founded in 1846 and includes 21 museums, 21 libraries, more than a dozen education and research centers and zoos—do not highlight the “success” and “brightness” of the United States.
“This Country cannot be WOKE, because WOKE IS BROKE. We have the “HOTTEST” Country in the World, and we want people to talk about it, including in our Museums,” said Trump.
The president’s latest remarks regarding the Smithsonian comes days after he ordered an internal review of the Smithsonian to ensure that “divisive or partisan narratives” are removed from the nation’s museums. The review is in compliance with Trump’s March executive order “Restoring Truth and Sanity in American History.”
Among the museums being targeted by the Trump White House is the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened its doors in 2016. The museum remains one of the most popular among the Smithsonian and surpassed 10 million visitors in 2023 after only seven years.
Trump’s targeting of Black history in schools and now the nation’s museums has garnered much condemnation.
In response to the president’s remarks about slavery, former Biden White House Public Engagement chief of staff Erica P. Loewe told theGrio, “This is an obvious attempt to whitewash history and silence voices that don’t fit President Trump’s narrative. Censoring museums will not erase the truth. It will only ensure Trump is remembered as the coward who feared it.”
She added, “Museums tell America’s story. President Trump just doesn’t want his chapter read aloud.”
Brandon Weathersby, spokesperson for the American Bridge 21st Century, a Democratic research firm, told theGrio, “Families didn’t vote for Trump to police museums or rant about exhibits showing the horrors of slavery.” He continued, “They voted for lower prices, good-paying jobs, and a better future for their kids.”
Weathersby said the president is “obsessing over historically accurate exhibits while Americans struggle to keep up with soaring costs at the grocery store.” He added, “Next year, Congressional Republicans will have to explain to their constituents why they’re still supporting Trump’s culture war fixation instead of delivering real solutions for working families.”
After Trump called for an internal review of several Smithsonian museums, U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., who is co-chair of the Congressional Museum Caucus, said the Smithsonian has an “impartial role and responsibility” to ensure an “accurate, and resonant telling of American history.”
“Trump has no right to censor our history, ignore the systemic oppression of marginalized people, and attack our intellectual freedom,” Pressley said in a statement. “Much like his disgraceful rollbacks of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and his campaign to ban books, this action is yet another attempt to whitewash our shared history and replace the challenges and triumphs of women, people of color, and Native Americans with false narratives forged with white supremacist ideology.”
The congresswoman added, “Black History is American history, and no amount of white-washing or erasure will change the truth.”
