Supermodel Sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid Donate $1 Million to Support Palestinians – Where Is The Buzz

[ad_1]

Supermodel sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid are donating $1 million to four organizations aiding the Palestinian people. This donation, reported by The Hollywood Reporter, will be distributed equally among HEAL Palestine, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, UNRWA USA, and World Central Kitchen, each receiving $250,000.

The Hadid sisters’ donation comes amid heightened violence in Gaza, where an ongoing Israeli offensive has resulted in nearly 40,000 deaths. Throughout this period, Gigi and Bella Hadid have been vocal advocates for the Palestinian cause, consistently expressing their support for Palestinians in Gaza.

Last October, in the aftermath of the October 7th Hamas attack that resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and triggered the latest escalation of violence, Gigi Hadid publicly addressed the suffering on both sides. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she stated, “I believe deep in my heart that no child, no people anywhere, should be taken away from their family either temporarily or indefinitely. That goes for Israeli or Palestinian people alike.”

The Hadid family’s connection to the region is deeply personal. Their father, Mohamed Hadid, a prominent real estate developer, was born in Nazareth during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948. His family fled their home, seeking refuge in Syria before eventually immigrating to the United States when Mohamed was a teenager. His experiences have profoundly influenced his daughters’ perspectives and their commitment to humanitarian efforts in the region.

The organizations receiving the donations are poised to make substantial impacts. HEAL Palestine focuses on providing medical and psychological support to children affected by the conflict. The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund aids in addressing the medical needs of children in the region. UNRWA USA supports the United Nations Relief and Works Agency’s efforts in providing education, health care, and emergency assistance to Palestinian refugees. World Central Kitchen is renowned for delivering meals to communities in crisis.

Marian Shields Robinson, mother of former first lady Michelle Obama, dies at 86

[ad_1]

Marian Shields Robinson, mother of former first lady Michelle Obama, was a major pillar during former President Barack Obama’s 2008 bid for the White House.

Taking on the task of caring for granddaughters Malia and Sasha, Robinson made their meals, ran their baths and tucked them into bed. She drove them to school, and to piano and dance lessons with Secret Service in tow. Once she became the nation’s first grandmother, she helped the girls settle into their home at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The transition would prove to be just as challenging for the Chicago native.

“I’ve never lived outside of Chicago, so I don’t know,’’ Robinson said in an interview with the New York Times, expressing her hesitations on permanently moving into the White House which reminded her of a museum. “In the end, I’ll do whatever. I might fuss a little, but I’ll be there.”

In her 2018 memoir, “Becoming,” Michelle Obama shared that her mother was forthright, honest and not afraid to speak her mind. “My mother, Marian, showed me how to think for myself and to use my voice,” she writes.

Robinson, often called “Mrs. R.,” died Friday, according to a family statement shared with NBC News. “She passed peacefully this morning, and right now, none of us are quite sure how exactly we’ll move on without her,” read the statement. The cause of death was not mentioned.

Barack Obama, whom Robinson adored, shared via Facebook in 2019 to celebrate his mother-in-law’s birthday: “I’ve always appreciated her steadiness, her perspective, and the way a wisecrack from her reverberates around the room.”

A Chicago native

Born on July 29, 1937, Marian Lois Shields was the fourth of seven children of Purnell Nathaniel Shields and Rebecca Jumper. Purnell was a carpenter and painted houses, while Rebecca worked as a licensed practical nurse. Through DNA research, the New York Times revealed the Shields’ complex family lineage to slavery. The story showed Marian’s great-grandfather Dolphus T. Shields was the son of an enslaved teen girl and her white owner.

Recommended Stories

This discovery “underscores the entangled histories and racial intermingling that continue to bind countless American families more than 140 years after the Civil War,” the Times reported in 2012. Some of the Shields family did eventually migrate north. That included Purnell’s mother, Annie, who moved her two sons from Birmingham, Alabama, to Chicago between 1920 and 1923.

In October 1960, Marian Shields married Fraser Robinson III, who worked for the Chicago Water Department. The couple would dedicate themselves to building a family life in their second-floor apartment of a brick bungalow located in Chicago’s South Side.

Robinson once worked as a secretary for mail-order retailer Spiegel and at the University of Chicago, but she was mostly a stay-at-home mom for Michelle and son Craig Robinson, former head men’s basketball coach at Oregon State University and Brown University. She returned to work as an executive assistant for a local bank when her daughter began high school.

“She was one of those parents that showed up all the time at schools,” Stephen Shields, the youngest of the Shields siblings, said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune. “She kept the teachers on their toes.”

Michelle Obama has echoed that sentiment. “We were their investment,” she wrote in “Becoming.” “Together, in our cramped apartment on the South Side of Chicago, they helped me see the value in our story, in my story, in the larger story of our country. Even when it’s not pretty or perfect.”

Robinson doted on both of her children as they grew and became successful adults. “When I look at Michelle and Craig — a big-time college basketball coach — I feel like maybe, just maybe, Fraser and I got something right,” Robinson wrote in a 2012 personal essay for Essence. “We didn’t do anything special. But I see the adults our kids have become and I can’t help but smile a little bit.”

Fraser, who had multiple sclerosis, passed away in 1991.

Life in the White House

Robinson lived a quiet life in that very apartment until 2009, when Barack Obama officially took office. The Obamas didn’t want their girls to be taken to school by Secret Service agents, and Robinson wrote in her essay for Essence that she agreed to support her daughter and son-in-law out of concern for the family’s safety.

“[Robinson is] a presence in a very quiet, understated way,” a longtime family friend told Politico in 2011. “The first lady wouldn’t be as comfortable as she is traveling around the country and the world if her mom wasn’t there to pitch in.”

Robinson’s plan upon moving to the third floor of the residence was to help everyone get settled and then return to her quiet Chicago life. But after three years, she seemed to have built her own new quiet life full of family.

“One of my biggest blessings is getting to see my granddaughters grow up before my eyes. My job here is the easiest one of all: I just get to be Grandma,” she wrote in her essay for Essence.

Robinson made sure her granddaughters did their chores, including cleaning their rooms, and she taught the girls how to do their own laundry

“[My mother] laid out the blueprint for how I have raised my own girls,” Michelle Obama wrote in a 2020 Mother’s Day tribute on Instagram.

Carving out her own space

Robinson did carve out her own space. She would spend afternoons reading in the great hall, which served as the first family’s living room on the second-floor residence. After spending some family time, Mrs. R. often retreated to her room, which had a four-poster bed and sitting area.

“There are many times when she drops off the kids, we hang out and talk and catch up, and then she’s like, ‘I’m going home.’ And she walks upstairs,” Michelle Obama told Oprah Winfrey in an interview.

Robinson kept a busy social life, and the Obamas mused that they would have to plan their schedule around hers. She made new friends among D.C. locals and often dined out, leaving the White House without the Secret Service detail. Betty Currie, who served as President Bill Clinton’s personal secretary, was among those new friends.

Robinson participated in many events at the White House and traveled with her daughter and her granddaughters for state visits. That included trips to China and South Africa. She also joined Education Secretary Arne Duncan to read to young children as part of “Let’s Read, Let’s Move,” one of Michelle Obama’s cherished causes as first lady.

“She [was] having a great time,” a family friend told Politico in 2011

Yet she never put aside her main role, caring for Sasha and Malia. During a 2010 state dinner, the Washington Post reported that Robinson excused herself in order to tuck in her granddaughters, and then returned to the soiree. “She’s been there for us every day,” former President Obama once said.

Khloe Kardashian, Kylie Jenner Clear the Air on Jordyn Woods

[ad_1]

Despite drama being a secondary character when it comes the life and times of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, it seems as if Khloe Kardashian is ready to put a certain portion of it to rest.

In the latest episode of The “Kardashians,” Kardashian admitted to being over the alleged feud between her and her sister Kylie Jenner’s former close friend Jordyn Woods. For context, and as reported by The Root in February 2019, Jenner and Woods’ nearly decade-long friendship blew up after reports that Woods allegedly hooked up with the father of Kardashian’s two children and NBA star, Tristan Thompson hit the internet.

Woods was instantly dropped by them with Kardashian specifically and vehemently placing blame on Woods for “breaking up her family.”

In an episode of “Red Table Talk” with Jada Pinkett-Smith in March 2019, Woods made it clear that she never slept with Thompson but that he allegedly drunkenly kissed her on the lips at a house party.

Now, in this new episode, Kardashian revealed that she feels like the internet has forced people to pick sides and said that she’s ready for that to be a thing of the past.

“I definitely get frustrated with the whole narrative. That is something I would love behind us all,” she shared in a confessional. “They’re always pinning the girls against one another and there’s actually no beef. I hate that you have to choose Team Jordyn or Team Kylie.”

Kardashian also shared that she “never had a problem” with Jenner and Woods rekindling their friendship, but that seems kind of hard to believe given the amount of mean girl-ness that was shown towards Woods. But I digress.

Jenner echoed similar sentiments later in the episode, explaining that the “narrative doesn’t exist” and that fans have a skewed view of her sister.

Both Woods and Jenner have been spotted hanging out since then and Jenner also confirmed that their relationship is better now that they’ve gotten some “healthy distance” between them.

Republican Twitter Trolls Attack District Attorney Alvin Bragg

[ad_1]

New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg wasn’t even the person who announced that a grand jury found former president—and current Republican presidential candidate—Donald Trump guilty on 34 felony charges of falsifying business records to hide a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels. And yet, white people on the internet seem to be mad mad at him.

Speaking about the case, Bragg commented, “We cannot and will not normalize serious criminal conduct.” And when asked about the verdict, he kept things short and sweet by saying, “I did my job.”

In fact, according to several legal analysts, he’s done his job better than anyone could have in his situation when faced with handling such a polarizing case.

And yet, no one wants Black people to bend the rules more than a white person in trouble. And in the seconds, minutes and hours that followed Trump’s guilty verdict, white people have been attacking Bragg left and right on X, formerly Twitter.

“When Alvin Bragg said “I did my job” — he was talking to one person: Joe Biden,” posted North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum. “Now it’s up to all of us to do our job: send @realdonaldtrump back to the White House!”

While some believe Trump’s guilty verdict will lessen his chances at another presidential term. Others say it will only hype up his base, and you know white people are mad mad when they start talking about war.

“TRUMP 2024! World War Two Pearl Harbor all over again,” posted someone going by CHEEZIT1350 on X. “Isoroku Yamamoto said, “ I fear all we have done is too awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.” Well, guess what, Alvin Bragg woke him up again.”

Another social media commentator going by Michelle Elaine Design, who says she makes handmade jewelry of all things, called Bragg a “disgrace to the legal profession” in a post.

“This is political persecution & will not stand on appeal. Karma is a bitch & what goes around comes around!” wrote Michelle Elaine. “You have personally elected Donald Trump to POTUS…Americans hate unfairness & will respond to this injustice.”

And then came the attacks on DA Bragg’s weight.

“Fat Alvin in New York can’t put murderers, rapists and carjackers in prison, but he wants to send Donald Trump to Rikers Island because murderers rapists and carjackers are not a threat to the Democrat base they are the Democrat base #AlvinBragg #Trump,” wrote @quinnwarroom247 on X.

And of course, no Republican political coverage would be complete without a few comments of outrage from professional white woman Megyn Kelly, who has a habit of saying nasty things about Black women.

“Guilty on all counts,” Kelly tweeted. The country is disgraced. Alvin Bragg should be disbarred. They will rue the day they unleashed this lawfare to corrupt a presidential election.”

Honestly, they all need to shut up and just take this L. See you all at the polls in November.

Guilty: Trump becomes first former U.S. president convicted of felony crimes

[ad_1]

Donald Trump became the first former president to be convicted of felony crimes Thursday as a New York jury found him guilty of falsifying business records in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through hush money payments to a porn actor who said the two had sex.

The verdict is a stunning legal reckoning for Trump and exposes him to potential prison time in the city where his manipulations of the tabloid press helped catapult him from a real estate tycoon to reality television star and ultimately president. As he seeks a return to the White House in this year’s election, the judgment presents voters with another test of their willingness to accept Trump’s boundary-breaking behavior.

Trump is expected to quickly appeal the verdict and will face an awkward dynamic as he seeks to return to the campaign trail as a convicted felon. There are no campaign rallies on the calendar for now, though he’s expected to hold fundraisers next week. It will likely take several months for Judge Juan Merchan, who oversaw the case, to decide whether to sentence Trump to prison.

The falsifying business records charges carry up to four years behind bars, though prosecutors have not said whether they intend to seek imprisonment, and it is not clear whether the judge — who earlier in the trial warned of jail time for gag order violations — would impose that punishment even if asked. The conviction, and even imprisonment, will not bar Trump from continuing his pursuit of the White House.

Trump faces three other felony indictments, but the New York case may be the only one to reach a conclusion before the November election, adding to the significance of the outcome. Though the legal and historical implications of the verdict are readily apparent, the political consequences are less so given its potential to reinforce rather than reshape already-hardened opinions about Trump.

For another candidate in another time, a criminal conviction might doom a presidential run, but Trump’s political career has endured through two impeachments, allegations of sexual abuse, investigations into everything from potential ties to Russia to plotting to overturn an election, and personally salacious storylines including the emergence of a recording in which he boasted about grabbing women’s genitals.

In addition, the general allegations of the case have been known to voters for years and, while tawdry, are widely seen as less grievous than the allegations he faces in three other cases that charge him with subverting American democracy and mishandling national security secrets.

Even so, the verdict is likely to give President Joe Biden and fellow Democrats space to sharpen arguments that Trump is unfit for office, even as it provides fodder for the presumptive Republican nominee to advance his unsupported claims that he is victimized by a criminal justice system he insists is politically motivated against him.

Trump maintained throughout the trial that he had done nothing wrong and that the case should never have been brought, railing against the proceedings from inside the courthouse — where he was joined by a parade of high-profile Republican allies — and racking up fines for violating a gag order with inflammatory out-of-court comments about witnesses.

The first criminal trial of a former American president always presented a unique test of the court system, not only because of Trump’s prominence but also because of his relentless verbal attacks on the foundation of the case and its participants. But the verdict from the 12-person jury marked a repudiation of Trump’s efforts to undermine confidence in the proceedings or to potentially impress the panel with a show of GOP support.

The trial involved charges that Trump falsified business records to cover up hush money payments to Stormy Daniels, the porn actor who said she had sex with the married Trump in 2006.

The $130,000 payment was made by Trump’s former lawyer and personal fixer Michael Cohen to buy Daniels’ silence during the final weeks of the 2016 race in what prosecutors allege was an effort to interfere in the election. When Cohen was reimbursed, the payments were recorded as legal expenses, which prosecutors said was an unlawful attempt to mask the true purpose of the transaction. Trump’s lawyers contend they were legitimate payments for legal services.

Trump has denied the sexual encounter, and his lawyers argued during the trial that his celebrity status, particularly during the 2016 campaign, made him a target for extortion. They’ve said hush money deals to bury negative stories about Trump were motivated by personal considerations such as the impact on his family and brand as a businessman, not political ones. They also sought to undermine the credibility of Cohen, the star prosecution witness who pleaded guilty in 2018 to federal charges related to the payments, as driven by personal animus toward Trump as well as fame and money.

The trial featured more than four weeks of occasionally riveting testimony that revisited an already well-documented chapter from Trump’s past, when his 2016 campaign was threatened by the disclosure of an “Access Hollywood” recording that captured him talking about grabbing women sexually without their permission and the prospect of other stories about Trump and sex surfacing that would be harmful to his candidacy.

Trump himself did not testify, but jurors heard his voice through a secret recording of a conversation with Cohen in which he and the lawyer discussed a $150,000 hush money deal involving a Playboy model, Karen McDougal, who has said she had an affair with Trump: “What do we got to pay for this? One-fifty?” Trump was heard saying on the recording made by Cohen.

Daniels herself testified, offering at times a graphic recounting of the sexual encounter she says they had in a hotel suite during a Lake Tahoe golf tournament. The former publisher of the National Enquirer, David Pecker, testified about how he worked to keep stories harmful to the Trump campaign from becoming public at all, including by having his company buy McDougal’s story.

Jurors also heard from Keith Davidson, the lawyer who negotiated the hush money payments on behalf of Daniels and McDougal.

He detailed the tense negotiations to get both women compensated for their silence but also faced an aggressive round of questioning from a Trump attorney who noted that Davidson had helped broker similar hush money deals in cases involving other prominent figures.

Recommended Stories

But the most pivotal witness, by far, was Cohen, who spent days on the stand and gave jurors an insider’s view of the hush money scheme and what he said was Trump’s detailed knowledge of it.

“Just take care of it,” he quoted Trump as saying at one point.

He offered jurors the most direct link between Trump and the heart of the charges, recounting a meeting in which they and the then-chief financial officer of Trump Organization described a plan to have Cohen reimbursed in monthly installments for legal services.

And he emotionally described his dramatic break with Trump in 2018, when he decided to cooperate with prosecutors after a decade-long career as the then-president’s personal fixer.

“To keep the loyalty and to do the things that he had asked me to do, I violated my moral compass, and I suffered the penalty, as has my family,” Cohen told the jury.

The outcome provides a degree of vindication for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who had characterized the case as being about election interference rather than hush money and defended it against criticism from legal experts who called it the weakest of the four prosecutions against Trump.

But it took on added importance not only because it proceeded to trial first but also because it could be the only one of the cases to reach a jury before the election.

The other three cases — local and federal charges in Atlanta and Washington that he conspired to undo the 2020 election, as well as a federal indictment in Florida charging him with illegally hoarding top-secret records — are bogged down by delays or appeals.
