Victoria Monét pulls out of June festivals due to ‘ongoing health issues’

The first wave of summer music festivals will go on without Victoria Monét, and the Grammy winner is “gutted.” Due to medical reasons, the singer has pulled out of the Governors Ball and more upcoming festivals.

On Monday, in a post to her Instagram Stories, the “On My Mama” singer updated fans with the news. In addition to the Governors Ball Music Festival in early June, Monét is pulling out of the Roots Picnic and the Blavity House Party Music Festival.

“I am gutted to share that I will no longer be able to perform at Governors Ball (NYC), Roots Picnic (Philadelphia) or Blavity (Nashville) this June,” she wrote in her post, per People magazine. “I am so sorry!! Candidly I have been dealing with some ongoing health issues that have to be addressed right now, but I will be back out there soon, that’s a promise!”

She added, “Please know it wasn’t an easy call but it’s definitely for the best.”

The R&B singer-songwriter said she intends to make it to “all other shows” she has slated for this summer, including Broccoli City Festival in Washington, D.C. in July, Lollapalooza in Chicago in August, and Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco also in August.

“See you soon,” she concluded her announcement.

While Monét did not elaborate on the health issues at play, she recently opened up about her struggles with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal and reproductive disorder affecting one in 10 women of childbearing age that disproportionately impacts Black women. Symptoms of the disorder can include irregular periods, infertility, enlarged ovaries, acne, excess body hair, and weight gain.  

After her last festival appearance at Coachella 2024 in April, the artist made headlines when she uploaded footage from her performance and remarked that “two moons” were on stage that night. 

“Welp.. I gained a lot of weight and it went a lot of places lol face, arms, tummy and most effectively… datassss,” Monét wrote. She added, “I usually am so critical and frustrated by it because PCOS has me really messed up, but optimistically, at least now there’s two moons on the stage.”

First Black Miss Nevada Meets Mom for First Time

A former Miss Nevada had a special reunion over four decades in the making. Elizabeth Hunterton met her biological mother for the very first time and shared her experience with PEOPLE.

Although Hunterton and her birth mother have been communicating over the phone and through text messages for the past four years, the pageant winner admits she was nervous about their in-person meeting after so many years apart.

“As my husband and I approached the location where my birth mother was waiting, I stopped walking and wasn’t sure if I could go through with it,” she said. “Ultimately, I chose courage over fear and I’m glad I did.”

In January 1980, just ten days after she was born, Elizabeth Hunterton was discovered by two pilots at a Nevada airport. She was eventually adopted and raised by a white family in Reno. She always knew she was bi-racial. But it wasn’t until 2018 that she was able to begin answering some of the questions about her birth story.

Using DNA matching, Hunterton was able to identify her father, who was Black and passed away in 2004. In 2020, she made a connection with a second cousin on her mother’s side who helped her identify her mother, who is Japanese.

Although Hunterton and her birth mother have exchanged text messages and emails off and on since 2020, the two took a giant leap forward in their relationship when they spoke for the first time on Jan. 1. The 44-year-old pageant winner told PEOPLE that she immediately felt something familiar.

“It was like, I remember you — and it was just this really weird, unsettling moment,” she said. “I guess I just didn’t expect to recognize it, and it was very sweet, talking to her.”

Hunterton said her birth mother said she regrets giving her up, but that she wasn’t emotionally or financially prepared to care for a baby at the time. She asked a friend to take Elizabeth to an adoption agency, but she believes she was left at the airport because adoption agencies wouldn’t take a Black baby.

Hunterton’s adoptive mother asked Elizabeth to thank her birth mother for giving her the gift of life, something she said created a “really beautiful moment” during their meeting.

“When I told my birth mother this she teared up and said, ‘I have the utmost love, respect and appreciation for your [adoptive] mom. She gave you what I couldn’t.’ ” Hunterton said.

In a May 20 TikTok video, Hunterton told her over 135,000 followers that while she was left with a few more questions that answers, she’s doing ok after the emotional experience. She also thanked followers for their support through the process. Although she doesn’t know if she’ll have a close relationship with her birth mother, she’s open to making plans to see her again.

“Will we have this close relationship where we’re skipping through the meadow and braiding each other’s hair? Probably not. But I’m ok and I’m just working through it,” she said in the clip. 

Hunterton said she plans to post more about the experience and her feelings as she gets a little more comfortable.

Netflix Confirms Production of New Series ‘All the Love You Wish For’ by Renowned Writer Kim Eun-sook and Director Lee Byeong-heon – Where Is The Buzz

Netflix has officially announced the production of its latest series, All the Love You Wish For (WT), a romantic comedy from the acclaimed writer Kim Eun-sook and director Lee Byeong-heon. The series promises to deliver a magical and humorous narrative, starring an all-star cast including Kim Woo-bin and Suzy, who reunite on-screen after seven years.

All the Love You Wish For tells the enchanting story of Jinn, a genie who awakens after a thousand years, and Ka-young, his new impassive master. Kim Eun-sook’s involvement in the project heightens anticipation, given her track record with hits like The Glory, The King: Eternal Monarch, Mr. Sunshine, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, Descendants of the Sun, and Secret Garden. Her storytelling prowess combined with director Lee Byeong-heon’s distinctive wit, as seen in Chicken Nugget, Extreme Job, and Be Melodramatic, promises a unique and entertaining viewing experience.

‘Bel-Air’ season 3 release date, first-look photos revealed

“Bel-Air” is returning to a TV screen near you. 

Peacock announced the premiere date and shared first-look photos for the third season of the dramedy series on Monday. “Bel-Air” season three, which premieres on the streamer on Aug. 15, follows Will (Jabari Banks) during summer break as he “makes an exciting pivot,” according to the press release. 

Series regulars Jabari Banks (Will), Adrian Holmes (Phillip Banks), Cassandra Freeman (Vivian Banks), Olly Sholotan (Carlton Banks), Coco Jones (Hilary Banks), Akira Akbar (Ashley Banks), Jimmy Akingbola (Geoffrey), Jordan L. Jones (Jazz), Simone Joy Jones (Lisa) are all returning for the third season. 

Showrunner Carla Banks-Waddles said in a statement that the writing team “dug deep into their own lives to craft stories that will resonate with our audience.”

“Season 3 is summer season of Bel-Air! No school. No uniforms. Just summer sizzle,” Banks Waddles explained. “Pools, beach parties, bonfires, fireworks, Juneteenth celebrations and lots of summer lovin’. Season 3 explores questions like, how do you prove yourself in a world that views you in limited ways? How do you reach beyond your comfort zone to create new opportunities for yourself? How does a family rebuild broken trust?”

Banks spoke to theGrio about the upcoming season at the NAACP Image Awards in March, saying that he was surprised by the story’s direction and excited for fans to see it. 

“Honestly, every time I read the script, I’m shocked,” Banks said on the red carpet at Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles. “I’m not gonna lie. I’m very, very excited for this season to come out. It takes place during the summer in Bel-Air, [California]. We’re high schoolers; [we’re] 17 years old, so you can get into a lot of trouble.”

He continued, “There’s a lot going on this season that I’m very excited about; a lot of stories opening up with different characters that we haven’t seen, a.k.a Geoffrey. We’ll get a little bit into that, too, so that’ll be fun.”

A reimagining of the classic ‘90s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Bel-Air” debuted on Peacock in 2022 to rave reviews. The series is based on a short fan film created by Morgan Cooper, who is the executive producer of “Bel-Air,” and supported by original star Will Smith, who has praised the reboot.

TikTok Lawyer Shares Theory Behind Diddy Video Tape Leak

Social media has been reeling after the hotel surveillance footage of Sean “Diddy” Combs assaulting singer and ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura was mysteriously published to the internet.

The consensus on social media is that the federal government is the culprit. However, that’s not what one particular attorney on Tiktok thinks.

ModyDanielle Obiorah took to TikTok and shared a gripping theory about who may be behind the leak and why.

First things First: Obiorah, or @imalawyerinreallife is as a federal employment, veteran’s disability compensation and personal injury attorney who was named as one of the Top 100 Lawyers by the Historical Black College Universities Magazine.

On Tiktok, the attorney began her theory by saying the video’s publishing is a sign that things are about to get “real bad” for Combs.

The video in question is a surveillance video from March 5, 2016 leaked to CNN. The video shows Combs running down the hallway in nothing but a bath towel, and catching Cassie at the elevator where she stood gathering her belongings. The footage shows Combs grab Cassie by her neck and slammed her to the ground before kicking her repeatedly and dragging her down the hallway.

After the video was published, Rapper 50 Cent trolled Combs but also suggested the feds or cops were behind the leak. Given they’d just raided his homes in Miami and Los Angeles a few months ago, 50 Cent said on Instagram that “This is why they put that tape out, they know they can’t charge him with what we saw, but they know we can’t unsee what we saw.”

But Obiorah doesn’t think this was the case. To her, neither the feds nor the Department of Homeland Security leading the sex-trafficking probe into Combs would risk their names being put out there.

She began to break down how she came to a rather startling conclusion as to who leaked the video to CNN. According to Obiorah’s theory, the outlet likely didn’t pay for the tape.

Instead, she suggested CNN probably got it for free which gives a big clue as to who leaked the video. While many people believe the leaker was someone who didn’t want or need money, she disagreed. Instead, she believes the culprit was likely someone who had access to a slew of other tapes, but unable to leak the tapes because they were in Diddy’s orbit.

Proving that many people may have videos, Obiorah said 50 Cent claimed someone once offered a video to him, regarding Cassie. With more lawsuits stacking up against the rap mogul, Obiorah claims less people will feel entitled to keep Diddy’s secrets and may hold these videos above his head in exchange for a huge payout.

“He’s refusing to pay because remember, he could have settled the Cassie lawsuit before it was filed. He settled it a day after it was filed,” she said in the video. “My theory is that he’s being extorted. The person who released the tape is someone who has a lot more tapes of him.” And these other videos, she theorizes, are likely worse than what we’ve seen.

Republicans need better race bait

OPINION: Why can’t the GOP find someone who is widely embraced by Black America when they want someone to represent conservative values?

Thirty years ago, a newspaper published an attack on my character that haunts me to this day. Although it started as an innocent misunderstanding, it has blossomed into a cruel joke that my college friends continue to perpetuate. For nearly three decades, I have battled this disgusting lie but now it is time for me to clear up this misconception. 

I like fried chicken. 

Watermelon is delicious. 

It all began during my senior year in college after Black students confronted the administration about the school’s lack of inclusion. To prove its commitment to cultural diversity, Auburn University Food Services rolled out its Black History Month menu — a selection of handpicked negro cuisine featuring ham hocks, collard greens and, yes, fried chicken every day. 

“When I first saw this menu, I, as well as other students, thought it was a cruel joke,” I wrote in the school newspaper. “This menu offers every stereotypical ‘nigger dish’ except watermelon. Maybe the director of Food Services thought we would beat the doors down to get to some ham hocks and fried chicken, but here’s a news flash: Black people actually eat the same food as you do!” 

As someone who was born and raised in South Carolina, I have a documented history championing deep-fried fowl. But since then, “Mike hates fried chicken” has been a running joke among my college friends. In fairness to those who turned this vicious rumor into an inside joke, my use of the n-word may have contributed to the misconception that I have a grudge against deep-fried fowl. While nothing could be further from the truth, I blame the person who chose this headline:

Contrary to what the headline professed, I am rarely “offended.”  In fact, not only did I think the menu was hilarious, but the campus-wide jigaboo food program proved the Black students’ point about the administration’s lack of cultural awareness. The tone-deaf attempt at placating Black students with distilled water-boiled collard greens was exactly what a racist institution would do if it didn’t actually care about Black people. 

This is a story about Lawrence Taylor.

I like Lawrence Taylor. I didn’t find his appearance at Donald Trump’s New Jersey campaign stop to stump for the presumptive Republican nominee for president to be shocking. I must confess that I have never spent fewer than zero seconds wondering about Taylor’s political beliefs, but I still wasn’t surprised when L.T. assured the crowd at the gathering of the MAGA-heauxs that they don’t “have to worry about nobody in my family voting for a Democrat again.” Taylor also proves Black people’s opinion of Donald Trump and the Republican Party. Anyone who knows the facts (and Taylor’s documented history of championing crack cocaine), could never be offended by L.T.’s endorsement of Trump. He is Republican fried chicken. He is “race bait.”

While “race-baiting” is usually reserved as a pejorative to hurl at anyone who dares to mention America’s national pastime (white supremacy), the term more accurately describes the GOP’s approach to politics. After years of rejecting the core conservative principles of small government, fiscal conservatism and Christian family values, Republicans baited their base into embracing a criminally corrupt, big-spending authoritarian who has no values.

According to Pew Research, most Black Protestants, Hispanic Catholics and Asian Christians do not vote Republican. Most Buddhists, Catholics, Jews, Hindus, Muslims and Jehovah’s Witnesses do not support the Republican Party. Most college-educated people don’t vote Republican. Low-income earners don’t typically vote Republican but neither do high-income earners. As you can see, the GOP is not a Christian party. The so-called “religious right” does not exist. It has no basis in religion, education or income. Yes, white people are a race and the Republican Party is their party. 

Unfortunately, the only thing white people detest more than being referred to as “white people” is when other people “make everything about race.” So, to protect its Caucasian constituents from the widely accepted, evidence-backed accusations of being, the party of white people routinely recruits skilled negro mouthpieces to echo their counterarguments. 

That’s why I am not offended by Candace Owens. I think Jason Whitlock is hilarious. As someone who was born and raised in South Carolina, I have a documented history of dealing with negro conservatives like Stephen A. Smith. In fact, not only did I think Coleman Hughes’ new book, “The End of Race Politics: Arguments for a Colorblind America” was hilarious, but it proves Black people’s point about white supremacy. His tone-deaf attempt at placating white supremacy is exactly what someone would write if they believed people who “don’t see color” actually cared about Black people. To me, these people are as “offensive” as fried chicken and watermelon. 

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about this cohort of Caucasian regurgitators is their rareness. Of all the heralded Black economists that have ever existed, when confronted about the economic impact of inequality, conservatives are contractually obligated to bring up Thomas Sowell — not because of his fame or his scholarship (even white economists generally consider Sowell’s work to be a “pseudo-scholarly sham”) — but because Sowell is the “go-to Black academic for conservative media outlets” (unless you count the laughable Roland Fryer).

Similarly, if Black voters were flocking to Trump as much as the New York Times and cable news pundits want us to believe, where are they hiding all the on-camera interviews with Black Trump supporters? Even if a famous Black athlete could lure Black NFL fans to the Republican Party, why couldn’t they find better bait? Is a cocaine enthusiast who played football during my watermelon-hating days the best they could do? 

When Black Twitter took issue with Stephen A. Smith’s political punditry on Sean Hannity’s show, it wasn’t Smith’s political leanings that caused concern. Every Black person has a conservative loud-talking, know-it-all uncle with a hairline like Stephen A Smith’s. Even Smith’s friendship with Sean Hannity isn’t offensive; it’s easy to understand why Smith would want to chop it up with anti-Black homey Hannity. However, it is notable that one of the longest-running, most popular shows on cable TV had to get a dude who yells about sports for a living to dissect Black politics. Then again, I’m old enough to remember when Stephen A. Smith warned his colleague Jemele Hill about disparaging a sitting president. To be fair, that was long before this pseudo-psychologist and political pundit Smith offered his opinion on Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities.

To be fair, luring Black voters to the conservative side of the aisle is not the main duty of race-baiters. They are nothing more than puppets sitting on the lap of conservative ventriloquists who pull their dark-skinned dummies out when they need a Black face to affirm the tenets of whiteness. Even white conservatives don’t respect these Black MAGA-boos or consider them to be particularly smart. They know Candace Owens has no education, experience or expertise in politics or … well … anything. Jason Whitlock is a joke to Black people and white people. Negro-contrarians like Taylor, Smith, Owens, et. al., are equally absurd to Black people who know things as they are to their white conservative counterparts. At most, they are “articulate,” which explains why right-leaning Black people are never asked to dissect the behavior of NASCAR dads, soccer moms, evangelical Christians or any of the numerous euphemisms used to describe white voters. 

Coleman Hughes’ entire schtick is to stop people from saying stuff that white people don’t like to hear. He joined the Manhattan Institute to focus on “race, public policy, and applied ethics,”  just before his fellow Manhattan Institute Fellow Christopher Rufo launched a campaign to redefine critical race theory. Hughes is known for his views on reparations, DEI, anti-racism and more, but his perspective is neither unique nor interesting. Admittedly Hughes does write well (for a Black guy). His most recent book (which I hate-read) is just a factory-refurbished collection of the same strawman arguments white conservatives have used for years. But Coleman Hughes is Black, so this book is different. 

It’s bait for racists. 

Interestingly, Hughes does not describe himself as conservative. Stephen A. Smith has never said he was a Republican. If I could stomach listening to Whitlock or Owens long enough to divine their political affiliation, they probably wouldn’t align themselves with the GOP. I actually agree with their self-assessment. A true conservative wouldn’t want the government interfering in women’s reproductive choices. Evangelical Christians would never support a presidential candidate who publicly brags about breaking every one of the 10 Commandments. Right-leaning traditionalists supposedly believe in a literal interpretation of history and the Constitution. Today’s conservative Republicans don’t believe in any of that. 

Their only affiliation is to their whiteness. 

I have no idea if Lawrence Taylor is conservative or not, but he is a typical Black Republican. He knows as much about domestic policy as Candace Owens, and that’s what they want. I’ve heard more Black men advocate for Bill Cosby than Donald Trump. The only party with less respect than the Republican Party in Black America is Diddy’s shindigs. And why can the GOP only find shape-up-averse Black men or sisters with the most unruly baby hair? When will Black conservatives make their edges great again? 

If the Republican Party actually wanted more Black people to join their ranks, they could probably find a single universally respected Black person to speak on their behalf. But that person would probably believe in something. The Black voices who echo the conservative sentiments don’t actually believe in the tenets they express. Jason Whitlock doesn’t believe it’s “satanic” to refer to an insurrectionist as “an insurrectionist.” Coleman Hughes (or anyone who’s ever read a history book) doesn’t actually think pretending to not see differences in culture, history and skin color will make white supremacy vanish into thin air. And no, Lawrence Taylor wouldn’t disown a family member who voted for Joe Biden. They care as much about the specific principles of conservatism as Herschel “the Babydaddy” Walker cares about “family values.” They believe in whiteness. And just like nasty rumors about my disdain for watermelon that were probably spread by the corporate cantaloupe lobbyists, a Black person publicly validating the supremacy of whiteness proves white people’s point. It’s exactly what someone would say if they didn’t care about Black people. 

Racists always take the bait.

A few years ago, while recording an audiobook, I ran into a very distraught Black man sitting silently in the kitchen of the studio. The sound engineer introduced him as a very respected voice actor. I didn’t want to disturb his peace, but when I smiled and said hello, he began recounting the terrible book he was voicing. According to him, he was halfway through a weeklong session of a book filled with every bad-faith argument about Black people you could imagine. In my attempt to sympathize, I asked him more about the book. “Trust me, you’ve never heard of this guy,” he replied. “Some dude named Thomas Sowell.”

Not wanting to make him feel even worse about his project, I stifled a laugh. I didn’t even make a face. Even now, I still find it interesting that a novice, non-economist could read every word of every page in Sowell’s book and see straight through it. But instead of discussing the bane of this man’s existence, I baited my fellow book thespian into silence by offering some of the lunch that had just arrived for my recording team. “Please have some,” I said. “It’s more than enough.” 

He accepted.

Then we sat there and ate our fried chicken.

Diddy’s ‘Apology Was So insincere

Remember when we got into any trouble as kids and our parents snatched us up and forced us to apologize to our purported victims? For most of us, the “apology” was the most bone-deep insincere thing we could muster – even saying “I’m sorry” felt like vomiting acetone.

It’s a questionable yet enduring childhood mainstay – adults forcing mea culpas out of kids that they deliver only to avoid getting their asses tapped. This is what Diddy’s video apology for the viral video of attacking then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in a hotel feels like: A forced thing he dropped on the world not because he’s actually penitent toward Cassie, but because he wants to avoid that collective ass-whippin’ from the public, his business partners and everyone else justifiably horrified at the video.

Five seconds on the interwebs will demonstrate how spectacularly the apology failed.

Though he likely played a background role in King Combs’ worse “diss track” ever created, Diddy has mostly exercised the option of shutting the f*** up through most of his protracted public execution since Cassie’s lawsuit last November. He probably would’ve stayed quiet had the vicissitude of stone-cold video evidence of his abuse not made him feel like he had to do or say something.

“I was f***d up at the time” seems like the populist thing to say – we all do things when f***ed up sometimes – but it doesn’t check out in a world in which he denied everything vehemently mere weeks ago. “I went to therapy” doesn’t check out for the same reasons; I would imagine any therapist worth the letters behind their name would discourage maintained public denial and victim blaming if they knew the truth.

 

(dragging him back into this mess without his consent) manipulating everyone into thinking that he’s alone facing a storm of criticism that he simply doesn’t deserve. He did so knowing not only that he’s a lying, deceitful piece of shit – which everyone else already knew considering he settled the Cassie lawsuit in less time than it takes a painted wall to cure — but that this 8-year-old tape exists.

Regardless of the amount of money Diddy allegedly paid to keep the tape hush-hush, all the support he’s sought from followers was predicated on his belief that it would never see the light of day. He hedged his bets on that and lost.

Of course, he’s nowhere near alone in the annals of famous men who hit the “Deny” button repeatedly until they could no longer. See Anthony Weiner, who denied extramarital sexting until…the actual texts dropped. Or former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who played the dumb role regarding his affair with Chief of Staff Christine Beatty (among many other things) until their texts – exchanged on city-owned phones – made it to public eyes.

And who can forget when President Bill Clinton played in everyone’s faces while under oath about the relations with Monica Lewinsky that got him impeached?

With the exception of the former, each man knew there was traceable digital or video evidence of their transgressions, and still they not only failed to admit it but they often attacked their accuser publicly. When video, texts and the like denuded any notion of their innocence, only then were they “sorry.” Then they lean on therapy, God or anything else that appeals to the public’s sense of forgiveness.

They might be sorry for their actions, but not because they wronged another – because of how it impacted them. Like avoiding that ass-whipping from mama.

The torrent of accusations Diddy is facing is almost comical at this point, as the internet will have you believe that he was in a triple-decker sex sandwich with Usher, Meek Mill and Justin Bieber’s grandmama. But even in his unenviable situation of defending himself against all of it, he seems to have lost sight of the fact that he’s absolutely guilty of at least some of what’s being said about him. But self-preservation is the order of the day, and Diddy isn’t about to apologize for a damn thing he hasn’t been caught doing.

At this juncture, Diddy would’ve been better served having a private conversation with Cassie – the one person who deserves the apology that he felt the need to give to us all instead – and maybe putting a significant amount of his sizable wealth toward sexual assault prevention causes.

But his wealthy, entitled ass has no such foresight. So expect more hard evidence to drop against dude, and more tiki-hut apologies…because as they say…there’s never just one victim.
