A Pet
The kids may love the idea of having a furry new friend in the house. But we all know that most of the dirty work ends up falling on Mom’s plate. If you’re going to add a new pet to the family, make sure Mom is in on the plan. And maybe find another day besides Mother’s Day to bring said furry friend into the household.
A Day Packed With Activities, When She Wants to Be Alone
While some moms may want to spend their day surrounded by extended family or eating brunch at the hottest restaurant in town, others may want to use the day to just do nothing. Check in with Mom before you plan a full day’s worth of things to do. You might be better off leaving her alone in her bathroom with her remote.
Anything Anti-Aging
This should go without saying, but consider yourself warned. Just say “no” to any anti-aging products, even if she talks about them. Give her a gift card to a store like Sephora or Ulta instead and let her pick out her own products.
A Home-Cooked Meal, If You Can’t Cook
Giving Mom a break in the kitchen is a good idea. But if cooking isn’t your ministry, maybe you should think about ordering from her favorite restaurant instead. If she doesn’t have to cook, she should still enjoy what she eats. But if you do decide to cook, you’d better not leave her with a sink full of dirty dishes.
A “Best Mom Ever” Anything
I’m just gonna say it on behalf of all moms out there. Please stop it with those “Best Mom Ever” mugs, t-shirts and pillows. She gave you life. Do better.

“Not Like Us” is the new summer anthem — especially for those of us who live in Los Angeles, and I shan’t be debated with about it.
That said, rap beef is as personal to the rappers involved as it is to the fans who consume it. As fans, we all have our favorites, and we all choose sides. Who we choose or who we think “won” varies based on our personal preferences when it comes to rap.
People who think it’s all about record sales and club bangers will tell you that Drake is the better rapper in this most recent battle, while people who take a more cerebral approach to rap — listening to rhyme schemes, wordplay, double entendres and the like — will say Kendrick came out on top.
Unless things turn violent (and we never want them to turn violent), we as fans win when artists keep putting out hit after hit to keep up in a rap beef that is moving fast because the internet is actually short attention span theater.
Back in the days before social media moved the needle, rap beefs progressed over months because it took a little longer to get in the booth, produce a hot 16 and then get it distributed and out on the streets so everyone could hear it.
This is why most of my personal rap diss tracks come from back in the day.
Music
I’m sure I’m not alone in this, but as I said earlier, we all have different tastes, and we all think differently about the music we consume, so I’m going to share my favorite rap diss tracks of all time, but I’m going to do so with a content warning.
These are my favorites. They may not match up with yours, and the reason they are my favorites may not align with your faves. Some of your favorites – “Takeover” and “Ether,” for example – may not even make the list because although they were very hot songs, they weren’t my personal favorites by either artist.
My all-time favorite rap diss track to this very day is Ice Cube’s “No Vaseline.”
You have to be of a certain age to remember when this one dropped. “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” had already shown us that Ice Cube was dope without the group behind him. He had just done his thing playing Doughboy in “Boyz N the Hood” and impressed us all with his acting as well.
Just when we thought he wouldn’t be able to top any of that, he dropped the album “Death Certificate,” and that album was so full of heat that I could not get enough of it.
In “No Vaseline,” he basically beat every member of NWA up by himself, and it was and still is legendary hip-hop magic.

DJ Quik ate MC Eiht up in this song.

Rampant misogyny and all, when this song came out, it took the East Coast/West Coast beef to an entirely new level.
How do you come at this man by telling him you slept with his wife? How do you have an entire video full of actors pretending to be the people you are talking about?
How diabolical was this song?
Kool Moe Dee, “Let’s Go”
One of the most epic battles in hip-hop history was between LL Cool J and Kool Moe Dee.
At this point, I don’t even think it matters who people say won because we got some excellent bars out of it.
“Let’s Go” is one of my favorite diss tracks of all time because Kool Moe Dee is a masterful lyricist and wordsmith, and the way he played with that man’s name near the end is legendary.
Eazy-E, “Real Muthaphuckkin G’s
This one is a fave because Eazy put this out after Dre moved to Death Row and put out “The Chronic.”
In this song, Eazy lets everyone know that although Dre was no longer on his record label, he was still getting paid off of all Dre’s music, and honestly, that was legendary and gangster.
As I said earlier, this is my list of favorite diss tracks. Yours probably looks different, and that’s OK.
At the end of the day, as long as we are getting good hip-hop to listen to, everyone wins.

The Biden-Harris 2024 reelection campaign is turning to a former staffer from President Joe Biden’s 2020 operation to lead its efforts in shoring up the Black vote.
Trey Baker, who served as the 2020 campaign’s national director for African-American engagement, was hired to reprise a similar role for the reelection team as a senior advisor, theGrio exclusively reports.
“Trey was essential in leading the Black outreach efforts that took place in 2020 when Black voters sent Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House. We are thrilled that this election he will do the same,” Biden-Harris Principal Deputy Campaign Manager Quentin Fulks said in a statement to theGrio. “From the very beginning President Biden and Vice President Harris have been clear: they are not taking a single voter for granted.”
Fulks added, “Our campaign is continuing to invest more often and more aggressively than any reelection campaign in history to reach Black voters and make sure they are aware of all the promises made and kept by the President and Vice President to the Black community.”
Baker, who also served in the Biden-Harris administration as a senior advisor to the White House Office of Public Engagement, told theGrio he was “excited” to join the 2024 campaign to “bring my experience to this campaign to make sure Joe Biden and Kamala Harris get four more years to continue delivering for our community.”
The new Biden operative said the president and vice president ran on promises made to the Black community that they have “made good on,” including: “Creating millions of new jobs for Black workers – delivering record low Black unemployment, Black small businesses are starting up at the fastest rate in generations, health care costs are low and more Black Americans are insured than ever before, not to mention billions forgiven in student-loan debt directly working to close the racial wealth gap.
Despite the achievements touted by the Biden-Harris White House, several polls indicate that some Black Americans believe the president and vice president have not lived up to their 2020 campaign promises, and fewer Black voters say they support their reelection than the 92% who voted for them. The presidential campaign of the presumptive Republican nominee, Donald Trump, has aimed to make inroads with the Black community, in hopes of narrowing President Biden’s 2020 electoral margins.
The Biden-Harris campaign hopes that Baker can help them recreate their historic win nearly four years ago. He also becomes at least the fourth Black man to join the campaign’s senior-level staff, which includes Fulks, former U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond, a senior advisor, and Michael Tyler, the campaign’s communications director.

“By all accounts, Trey is a talented, well-respected campaign pro and he is well-positioned to replicate the great work he did in 2020 again in 2024,” said Joel Payne, a Democratic strategist and former director of Black media engagement for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.
Payne told theGrio, “It’s important to bring these staff positions online as soon as possible to ramp up outreach in a timely fashion.”
He said he thought it was “encouraging” that Baker’s role before the summer. That signals the campaign “understands it still has persuasion work to do with African-American voters and that they are not treating these voters as simply a turnout universe.”
Baker’s hire comes days after the Biden-Harris campaign announced a $14 million ad campaign including “seven figures dedicated” to Black, Latino and Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities in crucial battleground states. In March, the campaign spent $30 million for a six-week paid media campaign to “help cement the choice for general election voters” between President Biden and Trump.
Fulks, the principal deputy campaign manager, noted that in March, President Biden traveled to every battleground state to talk to voters about the “issues they care about most.” He told theGrio, “We are building on that work by devoting the month of May to reaching the very voters that will decide this election.”

After all the hand-wringing and early criticism, Hulu’s three-part docuseries, “Black Twitter: A People’s History,” has finally premiered. Turns out all the backlash was unwarranted, as it was a fun, nostalgic celebration of the culture. The point of the docuseries is to capture our influence on modern history in real time, because you know if we don’t, someone else will come along and try to take credit for all our hard work.
Elon Musk Has Opened the Floodgates For Racists On Twitter
Several famous faces are interviewed about pivotal moments in Black Twitter history, with the people behind notable hashtags, memes and gifs providing the context behind how they were created.
In a very meta fashion, Black Twitter has plenty of opinions on “Black Twitter.” Other than a few criticisms about wanting more detail, the reactions are mostly positive. Viewers seem to be enjoying the walk down memory lane.
God-Is Rivera, former Global Director of Culture & Community at Twitter, appears in the doc to discuss how her team helped bring the ideas and vibe of Black Twitter to the actual company. In a thread, she posted a photo of herself at home watching the doc, writing on X, “Nothing will ever be perfect but I think this docuseries is an important dive into one of the most important communities and cultural phenomenons of our time— one I’m proud to have served and also consider myself a part of.”

Black Twitter is Not Wakanda
In case you need a basic primer on Black Twitter, the doc explains that it’s not actually a separate platform — it’s just a space we made for ourselves on the bird app.
One user laughed at how many people didn’t understand exactly what Black Twitter was, writing on X, “It’s also very hilarious that da yts thought Black Twitter was a separate app and all Like nah we just dominate every space.”
At one point, writer/host Baratunde Thurston notes that people were wondering “Is there some sort of portal that opens for us muggles to get in,” which definitely had viewers cracking up.
Moving the Needle
As it goes through the origins of how Black people made social media influential on MySpace (look it up kids), Facebook and Twitter, the doc focuses on how our honest, hilarious point of view often moves the needle on what’s popular. It explores how our live-tweets for shows like “Scandal,” “Game of Thrones” and “insecure” lifted them to new cultural heights.
One person highlights how essential Black people have been to the digital age, writing on X, “So far what I’m getting from #BlackTwitterHulu…Black people are the reason. That’s it.”
Rihanna’s Reign
Rih may be a polished, professional mogul now, but there’s definitely time to celebrate that time when she absolutely wasn’t and was getting all her shit off. One viewer celebrated the “Diamonds” singer’s Twitter bad girl era, writing on X, “Rihanna’s tweets were ICONIC back then.”
#BlackLivesMatter
“Chapter Two” takes a break from the fun and games to explore how Black Twitter was essential when it came to the Black Lives Matter movement. The fight for justice for Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tamir Race and countless others is examined from the point of view of journalists and activists who were on the ground, changing things in real time.
It shows how Black Twitter became so much more than live-tweeting our favorite shows and making jokes about crazy white people. It was also were we could come together to support one another through our heartbreak and grief. And after we were done being sad, we started planning.
One of the most important movements in history started on Black Twitter.
Enter Elon
The doc does touch on how Elon Musk wasn’t fooling anyone when he bought the app and it felt like he tried to put a stop to the fun. Despite the name change to X, users seem to agree that Black Twitter won’t be that easy to get rid of. “After watching this, part of me feels like the renaming was another attempt to take something from us,” wrote one person on X.
Whether you were there or want to know the real story behind all those memes and hashtags, “Black Twitter: A People’s History” is an amazing timeline and celebration of the culture.

A new survey shines a light on just how many American adults have used a GLP-1 drug such as Ozempic or Mounjaro.
CNN reported that a nationwide KFF poll conducted during the last week of April among a representative sample of 1,500 adults revealed that roughly 1 in 8 adults had used one of the popular drugs at some point in their lives. The survey concluded that half of the nation’s adults, or over 15 million people, currently use a prescription.
The KFF survey found that around 80% of respondents said they obtained a GLP-1 medication or prescription from a specialist or primary care physician. It said that 10% claimed to have gotten them from an aesthetic medical facility or medical spa, and 11% said they received them from an internet source.
Throughout the past year, as pharmaceutical companies have scrambled to meet the rapidly increasing demand, the Food and Drug Administration has reported shortages of the GLP-1 drugs Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro at different dosages.
The majority of adults have used the medications to treat chronic illnesses like diabetes or heart disease, according to the latest poll. Of the responders, over 40% had diabetes, and over 25% had heart disease. However, roughly two out of five people consume GLP-1 medications solely to lose weight.

The FDA greenlit Ozempic and Mounjaro to treat type 2 diabetes in 2017 and 2022, respectively. Although neither of the drugs is approved for weight loss, doctors frequently prescribe them off-label. Mounjaro utilizes tirzepatide, approved for weight loss in 2023 under the brand name Zepbound, whereas Wegovy, which was approved in 2021 for the treatment of obesity, contains semaglutide, the same primary ingredient as Ozempic.
According to the KFF survey, people between 50 and 64 years old were most likely to have used GLP-1 medications, whereas younger adults were more likely to have used them exclusively for weight loss.
Eli Lilly, the manufacturer behind Zepbound and Mounjaro, has taken jabs at those — including Hollywood celebrities — who use their medications for cosmetic purposes, theGrio previously reported.
CEO David Ricks explained that pharmaceutical companies produced the drugs for people with severe health conditions, not “just to have someone who’s famous look a little bit better.”
According to CNN, Medicare does not cover prescription weight-reduction medications, and the KFF poll found that only 1% of seniors have taken a GLP-1 medication exclusively for weight loss. However, most adults — over 60% — believe Medicare policy ought to be modified to cover these medications when prescribed for weight loss.
The KFF research revealed that most adults who have taken GLP-1 medications stated it was difficult to afford them, regardless of insurance coverage.
Sen. Bernie Sanders launched a probe last month into the “outrageously high prices” manufacturers charge for GLP-1 medications, which can cost over $1,000 for a month’s supply.
While he acknowledged that scientists at Novo Nordisk – which produces Wegovy – deserve “great credit” for developing the potentially game-changing drugs that can benefit millions of Americans struggling with type 2 diabetes and obesity, the senator asserted they will not do any good if patients cannot afford them.
“In my view, the American people should not have to pay up to $1,349 a month for prescription drugs that cost less than $5 to manufacture and can be purchased at a fraction of this price in other developed countries,” said Sanders in a statement.
“Unfortunately, Novo Nordisk’s pricing has turned drugs that could improve people’s lives into luxury goods, all while Novo Nordisk made over $12 billion in profits last year — up 76 percent from 2021,” he added. “That is unacceptable.”
CNN reported that exorbitant costs and restricted availability could lead individuals to seek substitutes for the highly desired medications. In the previous year, the FDA issued a warning on compounded forms of semaglutide that combine, mix, or modify components in ways that are not authorized or regulated.
The FDA, citing reports of adverse events in people who used compounded semaglutide, said, “Patients should only obtain drugs containing semaglutide with a prescription from a licensed health care provider and only obtain medicines from state-licensed pharmacies or outsourcing facilities registered” with the agency.
