The position of SGA president is a highly respected role and there is a special pride that one takes in being elected by their peers to lead. Secka, who is majoring in Fashion Design & Merchandising, is from Atlanta. He is a proud Fall 2022 initiate of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

We interviewed Lamin Secka, and talked to him about his position, goals, future and what it means to hold this type of leadership position in 2023-2024.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far?

As SGA President, the biggest thing I’ve learned so far is clear communication. In order to ensure accurate representation of student concerns, promote transparency and trust on my campus , increase student engagement and participation in campus activities, facilitate feedback channels for continuous improvement, enable collaboration among administration and the board of trustees, and to empower advocacy efforts to address student needs and promote positive change within the campus community, is very important for me to have proper communication channels within every area of interest to properly advocate for what’s important.

What made you decide to attend Clark Atlanta University for undergrad?

What made me decide to attend Clark Atlanta University was the rich culture and tradition of the institution within the AUC I was introduced to in high school. Many of my coaches and teachers went to Clark Atlanta which inspired me to tour my school. After the tour, I felt that panther pride within me. My biggest reason is my University’s fashion department. The love, support, and opportunities I saw and felt through my professors are what led me to the top design program out of all the HBCUs.

How has Clark Atlanta University molded you into the person you are today?

My character was shaped and my potential was awakened at Clark Atlanta University, which helped me become the resilient person I am today. The wide range of options it brought strengthened my commitment and sharpened my abilities, equipping me for the challenges of the real world. Our motto, “Find a way or make one,” embodies a principle that has become my beacon of direction, driving me forward in the face of adversity and giving me the willpower to conquer any challenge. It’s challenging to navigate the complexity of college life when on the verge of adulthood, but this phrase was a constant source of motivation when giving up looked intriguing. Not only has Clark Atlanta University given me the information and abilities I need to succeed in a world that is always changing, but it has also given me the perseverance and fortitude I need.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning) and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?

One initiative I had for this year is the enhancement of tutoring and study hall not only for our students but specifically for our student-athletes. With the help of the Provost and the Project Director of student success, we were able to expand on the tutoring days and times for students in their specific areas. For our student-athletes, we were able to expand on the space we had currently to fit all of our athletes in addition to bringing in more tutors.

How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?

My university places a high priority on mental health and treats it with great seriousness. Apart from our disability services and counseling, my institution is actively seeking additional outside resources to enhance mental health care on campus, providing students with more options for comfort. Every year, with the help of many sponsors, the Student Government Association organizes a mental health summit that is a huge success every time. My university is dedicated to creating a supportive, understanding, and filled with resources atmosphere where students feel empowered to put first their mental health through these unified efforts.

What does leadership mean to you?

To me, leadership means the ability to inspire, motivate, and persuade others toward a shared objective or vision. It shows leading by example, choosing actions that will best serve the group, creating a cooperative and encouraging atmosphere, and inspiring people to realize their greatest potential. Empathy, communication prowess, flexibility, and the capacity to empower others and assign duties sensibly are other qualities of what I think leadership is.

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2023/2024?

Universities should invest in the overall digital infrastructure and technology to support online learning, research, and administrative functions, ensuring accessibility and usability for all students and faculty.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?

Watch The Yard is an important venue within collegiate culture for our community, providing visibility, representation, and empowerment. Positive narratives, accomplishments, and cultural expressions are highlighted in order to neutralize negative stereotypes and honor the diversity and uniqueness of the Black student body. It also gives Black students a sense of pride and belonging by showcasing their accomplishments and empowering them. Watch The Yard provides networking, mentoring, and teamwork by building community and connections. This provides a supportive environment where Black children may succeed academically, socially, and individually. Everything else considered, Watch The Yard is essential in elevating Black perspectives and experiences in college society, making it a more welcoming and encouraging place for all students.

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

After graduation, I plan on interning in New York for 2 seasons in Fashion Merchandising which will lead me into graduate school to get a masters in Fashion Marketing.

Women’s College Basketball sensation Hailey Van Lith has set the record straight, saying she has not committed to TCU in an exclusive statement to the Associated Press.

“I did take a visit to TCU and am very interested in them, but I took visits to other schools and was very interested in them, too,” Van Lith affirmed to The Associated Press. “I haven’t made an official commitment, but I’m very close. The ink has not touched the paper for any school.”

Van Lith’s clarification comes amidst a flurry of reports, including our own, prematurely announcing her commitment to TCU.

Neither TCU nor Hailey Van Lith issued statements before this clarification. Stay tuned for further updates.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far?

The key lesson I’ve gained from my role in the Student Government Association (SGA) is accountability and effectively managing my responsibilities as President. Being in this position involves more than just leading and serving the student body; it also entails collaborating with the administration to ensure our goals are achieved. It’s a collective effort, and I must proactively fulfill my duties to enable my team to contribute effectively. Rather than solely relying on my team, I strive to consider what I can do to support them. For instance, this academic year, the Zeal Administration and I prioritized finding solutions to challenges instead of merely highlighting the problems we faced. We learned to analyze both sides of an issue and implement measures to prevent its recurrence.

What made you decide to attend Virginia Union University for undergrad?

I opted to attend Virginia Union University for my undergraduate studies due to its commitment to fostering a boundless future. The institution’s nine noble core values have equipped me with the necessary tools to continually expand and articulate my academic, spiritual, and professional odyssey. VUU affords its students the platform to evolve into their authentic selves and extends opportunities to those who refuse to be defined by their past. At VUU, students are actively realizing the divine blueprint set forth for them by providence. I am honored to proclaim that I have been selected as one of these students.

How has Virginia Union University molded you into the person you are today?

VUU indisputably stands as a preeminent urban institution of higher education, embodying the essence of liberal arts excellence. What’s more, it transcends mere academic prowess. I have found myself in situations where opportunities sought me out, rather than my seeking them. The myriad student-led organizations, athletic teams, academic initiatives, and mentors have not only shaped me into the leader I am today but continue to facilitate my evolution into the most authentic, inspiring, and supportive version of myself. Drawing wisdom from pioneering leaders, I’ve acquired the skills to procure resources necessary for navigating the professional landscape, elevating my academic pursuits, and reciprocating knowledge within the communities that surround me. Through this journey, I’ve discovered my innate role as a fervent advocate for the triumphs of others, relishing collaborative endeavors and relishing the opportunity to inspire the next generation to realize their boundless potential. I’ve come to understand that I thrive in environments characterized by positivity and intellectual enrichment. Armed with the invaluable tools imparted by Virginia Union University, I am equipped to not only enhance my own life but also empower others as they uncover the depths of their leadership potential.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning) and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?

I’ve collaborated with my university’s Executive Leadership Council (ELC), facilitating meetings between my administration and theirs to identify areas for enhancing student needs. We’ve focused on bolstering academic resources, campus safety, and student morale. Engaging with the ELC prior to the academic year allowed the Zeal administration to forge relationships with our counterparts, enabling us to serve as effective liaisons. Additionally, we’ve been actively engaging with the library faculty to advocate for extended library hours, recognizing its role in supporting students’ academic endeavors. The library offers invaluable resources such as study spaces, tutoring services, access to technology, and printing facilities, all of which contribute to student well-being. We’re persistently advocating for extended library hours to better serve the student body. Leveraging standing committees, particularly the campus safety committee, SGA has coordinated initiatives like self-defense training and collaborations with campus police to enhance safety awareness. Moreover, we’ve organized a protest in solidarity with victims of Title IX violations, advocating for a campus culture of accountability and safety. Our protest motto, “If you see something, say something,” encapsulates our commitment to fostering a supportive community. To uplift student morale, SGA has partnered with various student-led organizations and Student Development Services (SDS) to arrange transportation to sports games, spontaneous events, and campus-wide activities promoting career readiness, mental health awareness, and financial literacy.

How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?

My tenure as SGA president has been bolstered by the steadfast support of two remarkable individuals, who not only stood by me during my campaign but also continue to champion mental health advocacy within our administration. Under the purview of the Zeal administration, my executive vice president, Michiaah Roberson, assumed the noble responsibility of conducting regular mental health check-ins. Recognizing the inherent challenges of assuming a leadership role on a grand scale, Michiaah prioritized self-care and wellness. Meanwhile, my executive secretary, D’Anna Davis, presides over the student-led initiative, “4yourmental”, aimed at fostering mental health awareness and resilience within the VUU community. This initiative provides a sanctuary where students can navigate mental health challenges, seek support, and cultivate a sense of belonging. Complementing our efforts, the Department of Student Development and Success (SDS) houses the office of “Total Wellness”, helmed by two faculty members who offer an array of resources encompassing mental health support, counseling, sexual wellness guidance, and spiritual mentorship. Furthermore, VUU hosts weekly forums dedicated to mental well-being, including “Mindfulness Mondays”, “SOULFlow”, “Regroup Wednesdays”, and “Reclaiming my MIND”, which are open to all members of the VUU community. At VUU, we espouse a steadfast commitment to prioritizing mental health and ensuring that every student is afforded the opportunity to be acknowledged and heard without fear of judgment.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership, in my view, embodies the ability to demonstrate maturity as a team player, attentive listener, and adept problem solver. Possessing these qualities exemplifies true leadership prowess. A leader is someone driven by a passion to enhance the performance and atmosphere of their surroundings. They exhibit selflessness, passion, and unwavering support for the mission statement, the community they serve, and those who will continue their legacy of leadership.

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2023/2024?

I firmly believe that featuring a student leader like myself on a prominent platform to showcase the caliber of students VUU cultivates for a boundless future is an excellent representation of the school’s ethos. Utilizing every available social media platform is imperative for schools. Establishing a dedicated marketing team to promote the institution on TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and other platforms is essential. Inviting local news stations to campus-wide events to spotlight the university’s offerings is also significant. It’s crucial to seize every opportunity for publicity and maximize visibility.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?

Being able to highlight the significance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), the experiences of Black students on campus, Black excellence, and the celebration of higher education achievements is vital for providing support to the black student community. Recognizing their accomplishments on a global scale instills a sense of encouragement and motivation to persevere. Platforms like Watch The Yard play a crucial role in fostering a community of like-minded individuals, offering a platform to showcase their talents and achievements. Knowing that a wider audience is observing and acknowledging our shared goals and aspirations reinforces our collective determination to succeed.

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

Following May 11th, 2024, I envision utilizing my passport to immerse myself in diverse cultures, environments, and experiences. Embarking on my career journey in the cybersecurity sector within the government sector marks the beginning of my professional trajectory. Additionally, I intend to pursue graduate studies to obtain a master’s degree in data analytics, fostering continual growth in my career path. I aim to advance with the acquisition of knowledge, certifications, and invaluable experiences over time. Furthermore, I am committed to remaining an engaged alum, with plans to join the John W. Barco alumni association chapter, thereby contributing to the community that has played a pivotal role in shaping my journey thus far. Post-graduation, my focus will revolve around furthering my education, advancing in my career, and actively participating in community service, thereby reciprocating the support received and maintaining a commitment to community involvement.

There have been a disturbing number of lawsuits coming to light lately. At this point, we might be better off listing the celebrities who haven’t been accused of mistreating former employees. It seems like a lot of these artists don’t know how to handle the the transition from regular person to superstar.

Rapper Megan Thee Stallion is the latest entertainer to find themselves the subject of legal action. A former employee is accusing her of creating an “unbearable hostile work environment workplace,” and has filed a lawsuit against the “Savage” artist.

According to the lawsuit, on Tuesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Emilio Garcia, the star’s former personal cameraman, filed a lawsuit against Megan Thee Stallion—real name Megan Pete—Megan Thee Stallion Entertainment, Inc., Hot Girl Touring, LLC, and Roc Nation “alleging harassment, hostile work environment, and more than a half dozen labor code violations.”

In the lawsuit, Garcia alleges that in June 2022, while on tour in Ibiza, Spain, Megan had sex with another woman while he was sitting next to them in the SUV.

“Plaintiff could not get out of the car as it was both moving and he was in the middle of nowhere in a foreign country. Plaintiff was embarrassed, mortified and offended throughout the whole ordeal,” the lawsuit states. “The following day, Stallion inquired whether the plaintiff was in the SUV the previous night. Plaintiff confirmed that he was in the SUV. Subsequently, Stallion instructed, ‘Don’t ever discuss what you saw.’”

The suit also accuses the Houston native of fat-shaming the cameraman, allegedly calling him “Fat Bitch” as well as telling him, “Spit your food out” and “You don’t need to be eating.”

Knowing how Megan’s fans have stood up for her against relentlessly bullying makes these fat-shaming accusation particularly hard to swallow.

Garcia also states that he was misclassified as an independent contractor as a way of getting around California labor laws, was often denied regular meal and rest breaks, then saw his wages decrease when his pay was changed from a flat monthly rate to a “pay-per-task system.”

Meg’s attorney, Alex Spiro, explained in a statement to The Root: “This is an employment claim for money—with no sexual harassment claim filed and with salacious accusations to attempt to embarrass her. We will deal with this in court.”

If these allegations are true, it’s another example that proves no matter how much we may like and admire our favorite entertainers, we don’t actually know them as people. Megan Thee Stallion may put out catchy songs and have an empowering message fans believe in, but we don’t know her, and that’s important to remember when it comes to all these celebs.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Rev. Cecil Williams, who with his late wife turned Glide Church in San Francisco into a world-renowned haven for people suffering from poverty and homelessness and living on the margins, has died. He was 94.

Williams and his wife, Janice Marikitami, who passed away in 2021, appeared in Will Smith’s film “The Pursuit of Happyness,” which was based on the life of a homeless father and son who once found help at Glide Memorial Church. Williams died Monday at his home in San Francisco surrounded by friends and family, Glide said in a statement. A cause of death was not given.

An advocate for civil rights and social justice, Williams’ work drew the attention of celebrities, politicians, and businessmen, including Warren Buffett, who for years helped Williams raise money for the church through an auction for a private lunch with the hedge fund manager.

Maya Angelou, Isabel Allende, Bono, Oprah Winfrey and Bill Clinton were among the celebrities who once attended services at Glide. Williams’ focus always remained on helping the poor.

“I would have to be with people I understand, and it’s the poor,” Williams told the San Francisco Chronicle in a 2013 interview. “I’m with them wherever they are.”

Born and raised in the segregated West Texas town of San Angelo, Williams moved to San Francisco in 1963 to become the pastor at what was then called Glide Memorial United Methodist Church, a house of worship with dwindling parishioners in the heart of the city’s largely impoverished Tenderloin district.

Williams and Marikitami transformed the church with Sunday services that included a jazz band and a gospel choir. The church eventually amassed 10,000 members, becoming the largest Methodist church in Northern California and one of the largest in the nation.

They also put the church’s sermons into action and through the Glide Foundation started several community outreach programs that have served thousands of San Franciscans for over six decades.

“He led re-entry programs for those leaving prison, provided clothing and housing for people in need, and helped thousands of people access healthcare,” Vice President Kamala Harris said in a statement, adding that Williams was “a dear friend” and ”a beacon of light and love.”

Williams never shied from political and social issues, ranging from gay rights to compassion for homeless people and those addicted to drugs.

“He led with compassion and wisdom, always putting the people first and never relenting in his pursuit of justice and equality,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed said in a statement. “His kindness brought people together and his vision changed our City and the world.”

Williams retired as the church’s pastor in 2000. But he remained the Minister of Liberation and CEO of the GLIDE Foundation until last year when he stepped down.

“The essence of GLIDE begins and ends with love. … It is time for me to evolve, it is time for GLIDE to continue to evolve. We have gone through so much and come out strong, ready to keep building,” Williams wrote in a letter to parishioners.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far?

The biggest thing I’ve learned thus far as Student Government Association President is the true power of connection and guidance. Connection does not just include working with your constituents, administrators, or the student body on legislation, projects, and policies. Rather it is about understanding everyone’s needs and creating viable solutions to together as a community. Being a unified force together not only encourages work that represents the concerns, but it guides us into the direction of achieving work in solidarity.

What made you decide to attend Prairie View A&M University for undergrad?

I decided to attend Prairie View A&M University because of the family-oriented spirit and culture on the campus. After visiting the university in high school, I was able to see how students had an unspeakable passion about PVAMU, and I knew I wanted to be apart of this illustrious campus. From the rich traditions of Fried Chicken Monday, Humpdays every Wednesday, and Catfish Friday I knew this was truly a home away from home. The campus is so beautiful and vibrant as the staff and administrators welcome you in with open arms, and provide endless support and resources for their community. Additionally, I loved being introduced to the different organizations, as they carry the lively presence of the campus.

How has Prairie View A&M University molded you into the person you are today?

Prairie View A&M University has molded me into a woman by helping me step outside my comfort zone and seize all opportunities. Being apart of this school has broken my shy shell and assisted me with developing more of my character. Prairie View Produces Productive People, it ignities you to not come from home expectating to attend classes and return home, but pushes you to grow your young adult life. Through my collegiate career, I have been able to be apart of multiple organizations, and join the greatest sorority: Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. Stepping into Prairie View didn’t just order my steps, but established my journey of truly serving the community.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning) and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?

As Student Government Association, I am currently spearheading three initiatives: Washroom X Expansion, developing student leadership opportunities, and improving the structure of Student Government Association. Washroom X Expansion is centered around improving the laundry facilities on the campus ensuring facilities are clean, maintenance of the washer and dryers, adding laundry detergent and dryer sheets within the facilities, and collecting data to support the cause of expanding the laundry facilities on campus. Developing more opportunities for student leaders to develop their leadership skills professionally in social organizations and within their careers. Lastly, improving the overall structure of Student Government Association, helps us effectively represent our student body. It is imperative the legislation and body of work represent the student voice as it governs laws. These initiatives will improve the school and surrounding community by setting the standard of having the student voice.

How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?

Currently, Prairie View A&M University has mental health days in the Fall semester for all faculty, staff, and students a day of rest. Through previous SGA administrations, they have created legislation and worked with administrators on pushing the importance of mental health for our campus. We ensure that each year mental health day is added on all academic calendars, and each party understands the importance of the mental health day. Additionally in the Spring Semester, we have multiple de-stress events hosted by Counseling Services, to give students an opportunity to participate in many events such as smashing plates, yoga and mediation, music and dancing, exercising, and many more.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership is someone who can serve the community with a listening ear. You cannot lead effectively without the group’s voice. A leader is someone who understands the group and creates plans that aligns with their voice. Someone who is a true collaborator and advocates on behalf of their community. A leader isn’t someone who dictates the what, but involves the people in the how and why.

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2023/2024?

In the digital world, I believe schools should continue to have dynamic social media [channels] that engage students and community members with the business of the school. Through trendy marketing schemes and content can assist with the engagement of the community. Representation is key to make sure people are remaining connected.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?

Watch the Yard is important to Black students and college culture because it amplifies and showcases the young Black culture across the nation. Society does not expect African American let alone young African Americans to be involved in the community. Watch the Yard not only amplifies the voice, but it provides a platform for undergraduate NPHC sorority and fraternities to display their achievements and connect with others on uniting our communities into greater.

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

My plans after graduation are to continue to explore my career options. I don’t want to rush looking for a job, but understand the true development of a career. I am currently filling out internships to different congressmen and women offices in Washington DC. I am super ecstatic see what the government world looks like. I enjoy being in the room when decisions are being made and ensuring that we are representing the people’s voice in the room.
