In case you didn’t know, July is Fibroids Awareness Month and more famous faces are starting to open up about their journey with the uterine disease. The latest one is Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o.

In a new post to Instagram on Tuesday, the “Us” star revealed that she received a diagnosis of fibroids back in 2014, the same year she received the Academy Award for her role in “12 Years A Slave.” For context, fibroids are noncancerous tumors that can grow within or around the uterus and causea variety of symptoms like heavy bleeding, painful periods, severe cramps and even pose a risk to fertility.

Nyongo’o then shockingly shared that she had 30 of them in her uterus and had to get surgery to get them removed. As a result of suffering in silence for years, she began opening up to her close friends about her experience and realized that she wasn’t alone in her struggle.

Now, she’s joined a handful of congresswomen to introduce a package of uterine fibroid Congressional bills that would “expand research funding, increase early detection and interventions for uterine fibroids, study the causes of uterine cancer, and increase public awareness.” She’s also started the FWH x Lupita Nyong’o Uterine Fibroid Research Grant in tandem with the Foundation for Women’s Health to “research proposals to develop minimally invasive or non-invasive treatments for uterine fibroids to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.”

Seeing her transparency, it got us thinking about the handful of other women who’ve been outspoken about their battle with fibrods like Venus Williams, Cynthia Bailey and more. So keep reading to see a glimpse of their stories.

Venus Williams

Earlier in July, Venus Williams shared that she’d been dealing with fibroids for years. Specifically, in a recent interview with TODAY, she referenced a moment while training for Wimbledon in 2016 when she was doubled over in pain and said that doctor’s brushed off her symptoms for years before she received her official diagnosis.

“I didn’t know that they were really big,” Williams said. “I didn’t know that they were growing and growing and growing.”

She added: “I had no idea what that meant. No one explained it to me. Looking back, that’s not funny at all to take away someone’s opportunity to have a child or create a family if they want to. It’s not a joke.”

Amber Ruffin

As we previously told you, in 2022, comedian and late night show host Amber Ruffin got all the way real about her battle with fibroids, revealing that she initially ignored all the horrible symptoms she was experiencing for years until it became too much to bare.

“I ignored all of the symptoms because of a history of horrible doctors,” she said. “I was also more interested in working than taking the time I needed to make sure my friggin’ uterus didn’t fall out. That’s crazy behavior that will surely put you in danger. But I did exactly that.”

She ultimately decided to get a hysterectomy to be done with dealing with her uterus and all the issues.

Beverly Johnson

Legendary supermodel Beverly Johnson has been speaking out about her experience with fibroids since the 1980s. Though she had a previous procedure to get rid of them in 1999, they ended up growing back. So, at age 47, she had a hysterectomy in an attempt to deal with them pesky tumors once and for all. Unfortunately, it led to her experiencing early menopause.

“It was a life changing moment. I went from my swinging forties to full blown menopause and I was not prepared,” she said in an interview with PEOPLE in 2022.

Eve

Shortly after getting married in 2014, rapper Eve began going through some trouble while trying to get pregnant and start a family. Some time between 2020-2021, she had been diagnosed fibroids and endometriosis. While she underwent surgery to have them removed, she still had to try IVF in order to have a child. Thankfully, the method was successful and she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

Cynthia Bailey

It wasn’t until Cynthia Bailey got pregnant with her daughter Noelle in 2000 that she learned she had fibroids. Though the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star’s symptoms were minimal at first, they began to get progressively worse over time to the point where she was suffering through anemia from heavy bleeding, pelvic pain and non-food cravings for things like ice and chalk. She eventually decided to get a uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), a minimally invasive procedure in which tiny particles are injected into the blood vessels that feed fibroids causing them to shrink.

Kenya Moore

For “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kenya Moore, her journey with fibroids began in her early 30s which led to her undergoing several surgeries to get them out of her body. In an essay for Oprah Daily in 2018, she detailed that she had one fibroid the size of a full-term baby and that doctors warned her that her uterus may not recover from all the scarring and would make it nearly impossible for her to carry a child. Thankfully, she was able to welcome her daughter Brooklyn in 2018 at age 47.

FKA Twigs

When it comes to singer FKA Twigs, she revealed her journey with fibroids in a shocking feature for Vogue magazine in 2020. In it, she shared that she underwent laparoscopic surgery to have “six large fibroid tumors—which she likened to two apples, three kiwis, a few strawberries, and ‘a fruit bowl of pain every day’—removed from her uterus.”

“I was working so much, and I was so determined [to] make an album, that I actually knew that I had some sort of growth in my stomach for a long time, and I didn’t do anything,” she explained at the time. “I assumed that I had stomach cancer and that I was going to die. It was kind of this underlying stress that I have never told anyone about.”

Tamar Braxton

Tamar Braxton opened up about her struggles with fibroids during a roundtable discussion titled “Unmuting Fibroids: Getting Loud for Equal Care” in 2022 where she detailed that she’d been experiencing severe symptoms caused by them for years but it never raised any red flags. It wasn’t until she had a routine appointment with her gynecologist when she learned the fibroids were posing a risk to her fertility.

“I remember having numerous conversations openly about my infertility issues and not talking about the core problem,” she said at the time. “A lot of people want to talk about infertility because I think that’s a conversation that’s more comfortable to have instead of [talking about] the root of the issue, which was the fibroids.”

Yvonne Orji

“Insecure’s” Yvonne Orji got transparent about her journey with her fibroids diagnosis in 2022 when she revealed she found out about them during scans for some back issues that she was dealing with. She said that she was “shook” to find out about them as she had no symptoms or inkling that she even had them.

Nischelle Turner

In the comments section of Nyong’o’s post, popular “Entertainment Tonight” journalist and host Nischelle Turner shared that she had three surgeries in 10 years to address her issues with fibroids. She’d previously spoken out about her journey in 2022 in an interview with PEOPLE.

“When I was 35 years old, my stomach had grown to a size that looked like I was three months pregnant,” Turner said then. “And that was because the fibroids had grown so big and were protruding and pushing out my stomach. It was almost like an alien because I could move them around and I knew it wasn’t right so I went and got checked.”

Toya Johnson

Entreprenuer and WeTV star Toya Johnson recently opened up about her fibroid struggles during a lengthy discussion with the USA Fibroids Center in October 2024. During her talk, she discussed the initial symptoms she endured, the moment she learned the shocking truth, and how she dealt with them emotionally and mentally.

Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers are part of the new generation of women’s basketball stars who have been able to profit off their name in college and build brands that have helped them excel off the court in the WNBA.

All three players had national star power before stepping foot in the pros. Clark and Reese have made the All-Star Game in each of their first two seasons and are two of the most popular players in the league.

Bueckers was voted a starter in her first All-Star Game this weekend.

The next group up in college that is led by Hannah Hidalgo, Flau’jae Johnson, Olivia Miles and JuJu Watkins has already benefitted from the name, likeness and image. According to On3, Johnson’s NIL valuation is $1.5 million.

“NIL, man, it is beautiful,” Johnson said. “This year in March Madness, I had about five commercials running and you know it was so cool watching the game, then seeing myself come on. It’s just a great opportunity.”

Johnson is a guard at LSU, one of the top schools for NIL in a variety of sports from football to women’s gymnastics to women’s basketball. Johnson, who also has a music career, has gained from the exposure the school has given her, doing national media campaigns with Experian and Powerade.

Hildago, who will be entering her junior year at Notre Dame, is happy that players can finally profit off their own images as opposed to the school getting it all.

“It’s a blessing. Schools for decades have been able to make money off of college players’ names. So for now, for student athletes to be able to make money off of how they carry themselves, you know, we’re a brand ourselves,” she said. “I’m a brand myself and so be able to make money off of my name is honestly truly a blessing and just taking advantage of it is the biggest thing.”

Johnson, Hidalgo and Miles, who helped the U.S. qualify for the World Cup next year by winning gold at the AmeriCup earlier this month, all said that they don’t let the NIL deals they have get in the way of their sport. They credit having a strong support system around them as well as people who handle the deals for them.

“I really dedicate one or two times a week to kind of get all my stuff done,” Miles said. “My agent is very good at scheduling that, but most of my money comes from the collective deal, so for that I really don’t have to do much, which is nice. But any other of the other side deals, my agent will send a videographer out to help me or have her edit stuff or whatever it may be.”

Getting deals and earning money hasn’t just helped the players financially. Some have given back to their communities, including Johnson.

“I just want to be one of those people that uses NIL the right way,” she said. “This year I did a campaign with Experian and we relieved $5 million in debt right for families in Louisiana and then every game we won we added $100,000 to the pot.”

Johnson said it was really touching and emotional when she would receive videos on Instagram from people she helped.

“I’m really using my platform for impact for real. So I think that’s the best part of NIL and just making it better for the young girls that’s coming behind us,” she said.

Noir Nation, this one is deeply alarming. Across the country—especially in metro areas like Atlanta—landlords are being pressured by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to give up personal details about their tenants… without a warrant, without a judge, and without a clear legal requirement!

AP News uncovered that these letters—posing as official subpoenas—have been sent to property owners requesting everything from rental applications and lease documents to copies of IDs and emergency contacts. But here’s the catch: these so-called “subpoenas” aren’t backed by a judge’s signature. That means they’re not legally enforceable—and landlords technically aren’t required to comply.

“Just because it looks official doesn’t mean it’s lawful,” said one legal expert.

“This could expose landlords to lawsuits for violating tenant rights.”

Critics are calling it a legal gray area being used to bypass due process—and tenant advocates are already warning this could disproportionately impact Black and Brown renters, undocumented communities, and those already living on the margins.

Atlanta-based real estate attorneys say many landlords are choosing to ignore the letters or contact immigration lawyers before making any moves. But others, unaware of the legal nuance, have already handed over private tenant information—with no court order at all.

ICE has responded by saying these letters are part of an “administrative subpoena” process. Still, if a landlord refuses to comply, the government would have to go through federal court to try and enforce it.

Soccer had a fierce reckoning with heat at the recently concluded FIFA Club World Cup in the United States — a sweltering preview of what players and fans may face when the U.S. co-hosts the World Cup with Mexico and Canada next summer.

With temperatures rising worldwide, scientists warn that staging the World Cup and other soccer tournaments in the Northern Hemisphere summer is getting increasingly dangerous for both players and spectators. Some suggest that FIFA may have to consider adjusting the soccer calendar to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

“The deeper we go in the decade, the greater the risk without considering more dramatic measures, such as playing in the winter months and/or cooler latitudes,” said Prof. Piers Forster, director of the Priestley Centre for Climate Futures in Leeds, England. “I’m getting increasingly worried that we are only one heatwave away from a sporting tragedy and I would like to see governing bodies lean into the climate and health science.”

Tournament soccer in June and July is a tradition going back to the first World Cup in 1930.

Since then, the three-month period of June, July and August globally has warmed by 1.05 degrees Celsius (1.89 degrees Fahrenheit), according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Meanwhile, European summer temperatures have increased by 1.81 degrees C. The rate of warming has accelerated since the 1990’s.

Climate scientists say that’s a factor that needs to be considered when playing high-intensity outdoor sports like soccer.

“If you want to play football for 10 hours a day, they’ll have to be the hours of the early morning and late evening,” climatologist Friederike Otto from Imperial College, London, told The Associated Press in an email, “if you don’t want to have players and fans die from heatstroke or get severely ill with heat exhaustion.”

FIFA adapts

Extreme heat and thunderstorms made an impact on FIFA’s newly expanded tournament for club teams. The Club World Cup was held in 11 American cities from June 14 to July 13.

FIFA adapted by tweaking its extreme heat protocol to include extra breaks in play, more field-side water, and cooling the team benches with air fans and more shade.

Still, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández said the heat made him dizzy and urged FIFA to avoid afternoon kickoffs at the World Cup next year.

The global soccer players union, FIFPRO, has warned that six of the 16 World Cup cities next year are at “extremely high risk” for heat stress.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino addressed the heat concerns on Saturday, saying the handful of World Cup stadiums that are covered would be used for day-time games next year.

Extreme heat could become an even bigger challenge at the following World Cup in 2030, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Games are scheduled to be played in afternoons and early evenings from mid-June to mid-July. All three countries have already seen temperatures rise above 40 degrees C (well above 100 Fahrenheit) this summer.

FIFA downplayed the heat risk in its in-house evaluation of the 2030 World Cup bid, saying “weather conditions are difficult to predict with the current development in global and local climate, but are unlikely to affect the health of players or other participants.”

Heat exhaustion

The physical effects of playing 90 minutes of soccer in direct sunshine during the hottest part of the day can be severe and potentially result in hyperthermia – abnormally high body temperatures.

“When players experience hyperthermia, they also experience an increase in cardiovascular strain,” said Julien Périard of the University of Canberra.

“If core temperature increases excessively, exertional heat illness can occur,” leading to muscle cramping, heat exhaustion, and even life-threatening heat stroke, he said.

Many sports events held in the summer adjust their start times to early morning or late night to minimize the risk heat-related illness, including marathons at the Olympics or track world championships. Morning kickoffs, however, are rare in soccer, where World Cup match schedules are often set with European TV audiences in mind.

It would be hard for FIFA to avoid day-time World Cup kickoffs given the packed match schedule as the number of participating teams increases from 32 to 48 in 2026.

Calendar rethink

Heat mainly becomes an issue when the World Cup is held in the Northern Hemisphere, because June and July are winter months in the Southern Hemisphere.

FIFA has stuck to its traditional June-July schedule for the men’s World Cup except in 2022 when it moved the tournament to November-December to avoid the summer heat in Qatar. Something similar is expected when neighboring Saudi Arabia hosts the tournament in 2034.

However, moving the World Cup to another part of the year is complicated because it means Europe’s powerful soccer leagues must interrupt their season, affecting both domestic leagues and the Champions League.

FIFA didn’t respond to questions from AP about whether alternate dates for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups were being considered.

When and where to schedule the World Cup and other outdoor sports events is likely to become more pressing as the world continues to warm.

Athletes and even everyday people doing basic physical activities are now exposed to 28% more of moderate or higher heat risk in 2023 than they were in the 1990s, said Ollie Jay, a professor at the University of Sydney who has helped shape policy for the Australian Open in tennis.

“This is symbolic of something bigger,” said Michael Mann, a University of Pennsylvania climate scientist. “Not just the danger and inconvenience to fans and players, but the fundamentally disruptive nature of climate change when it comes our current way of life.”

A veneer of perfection fissures in Laura’s life, however, when Daniel returns home from college with his new girlfriend, Cherry (Cooke), a gorgeous and apparently lovely woman, Laura cannot understand and cannot even trust herself with.

Two men boarded a Jefferson Lines bus in Fargo, North Dakota, but instead of a smooth ride to their destination in Minnesota, they were transported back to the height of the Civil Rights Movement. And now, one of the alleged victims, Xavier Davis, is taking legal action.

It’s been almost 70 years since a Montgomery bus driver ordered Rosa Parks to move to the back of a bus. But it seems history is repeating itself after the same thing happened to two men who are now suing Jefferson Lines and the unnamed bus driver for alleged racial discrimination, KARE reported.

The incident happened on July 13, 2023. That’s when Davis claims the bus driver approached him and another Black man, ordering them to the back of the bus despite the company having a “first come, first served” seating policy, according to the lawsuit obtained by the Miami Herald.

This led to an argument between the men and the driver, but in efforts to diffuse the situation and get to their destination on time, the men eventually complied with the driver’s orders. They then watched as other white passengers boarded the bus and chose their seat without incident.

The lawsuit also claims the two men just so happened to be the only Black people on the bus, making the entire situation more complicated. According to Davis’ attorney, Samuel Savage, the 2023 exchange had racial undertones reminiscent of 1955. “Rosa Parks took a stand in 1955, refused to give up her seat, and we’re not going back, not now, not ever, not in 2023, not in 2025,” Savage’s statement read.

To be expected, the bus driver tells a different story behind the reason he asked the men to move. Four days after the incident, the bus company asked the driver to make an incident report. In it, the driver claims the men smelled like marijuana, according to the lawsuit.

Additionally, part of the suit includes a human rights investigation by the state which found probable cause that Davis was in fact discriminated against, KARE reported. There is no policy by Jefferson Lines that dictates passengers board from the back of the vehicle to the front, contradicting the driver’s account.

So now, Davis is suing. He’s seeking $50,000 in damages. A Jefferson Lines spokesperson told KARE that the company doesn’t comment on active legal matters.

Surveillance footage captured the break-in, giving Atlanta police crucial leads. Authorities have since issued an arrest warrant and are actively tracking a red 2025 Hyundai Elantra believed to be connected to the crime. Leveraging Apple’s “Find My” feature, investigators are working to locate the stolen AirPods, hoping it’ll lead them to the culprits.

This incident is especially significant as it happened while Beyoncé was performing live in Atlanta, underscoring the risks that come with high-profile touring and the value placed on unreleased music and exclusive content.
