Police have described the incident as a road rage incident after Patton was shot on Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard after getting in an argument with another driver. Following the shooting, Patton’s car crashed into a house, where he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to PEOPLE.
Chris Walker, who had not been in the house during the crash, said to WSB-TV (Atlanta, Georgia, television station affiliated with ABC) that the car drove up the front porch of the home and crashed into the front wall. “I’m like, ‘What the heck happened to my place that I’m staying now?’ I never thought it would be this property.”
In a statement with WSB-TV, Big Boi shared how the death has affected his family:
“Everybody who knows Uncle Moonie heart aches. He wasn’t just my uncle, he was Unc to all that met him. A moment of rage has in totally pierced the heart of my family forever.”
Police have arrested two people in connection with Patton’s death. 32-year-old Janisha Crumbley was arrested on June 20 and charged with hindering the apprehension of a criminal, according to The Mirror US. She was released on a $30,000 bond on June 22, per PEOPLE.
Also arrested was Jabyrion Crumbley, who turned himself in on July 2 at Fulton County Jail. The 18-year-old was charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and has been in custody without bond since July 4, per The Mirror US.
Since the passing of his uncle, Big Boi has shared a video montage tribute on Instagram to honor his uncle with the caption:
“Long Live Uncle Moonie… Miss ya Unc. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.”
Friends and fans expressed their love and condolences for Big Boi and his family in the comments.

Fans were hoping he’d hit the main stage after Summer Walker dropped out last minute, but his double performance more than delivered.
Coco Jones lit up the mainstage Friday night with fan favorites from her Why Not More album, including “On Sight” and “Taste”, a Britney Spears’ Toxic sample, and she followed it up with another set Saturday on the AT&T Dream in Black Stage for those who missed the first.
And of course, GloRilla made her ESSENCE Festival Of Culture® Presented By Coca-Cola® Evening Concert Series debut, setting the energy all the way up.

The former Librarian of Congress abruptly fired by President Donald Trump has found a new position with the country’s largest philanthropic supporter of the arts.
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation exclusively told The Associated Press that Carla Hayden will join the humanities grantmaker Monday as a senior fellow whose duties will include advising on efforts to advance public knowledge through libraries and archives.
The year-long post places Hayden back at the center of the very debates over American culture that surrounded her dismissal. The White House ousted Hayden, the first woman and the first African American to hold the title, after she was accused of promoting “radical” literary material by a conservative advocacy group seeking to squash Trump opposition within the federal government.
Hayden acknowledged existing threats to “the free exchange of ideas” in a statement to the AP.
“For generations, libraries, archives, and cultural institutions have been the guardians of knowledge and the catalysts for human progress,” she said. “Together, we will work to strengthen the public knowledge ecosystem and ensure that the transformative power of information remains accessible to all.”
Mellon’s response to government funding cuts
Meanwhile, the Mellon Foundation has been working to fill fiscal holes for arts communities reeling from federal cuts. Its $15 million “emergency” fund aims to offset the $65 million that were supposed to go to the state humanities councils that organize book fairs, heritage festivals, theater productions and other programs fostering cultural engagement.
The foundation has previously supported the American Library Association’s efforts to counter book bans, increase scholarships for librarians of color and boost adult literacy.
Mellon President Elizabeth Alexander said the foundation is thrilled to welcome Hayden, “a leader with an unshakable regard for the public good of the American people,” during such a “crucial time.” Public knowledge institutions are navigating “historic challenges and transformative advances,” according to Mellon, including artificial intelligence, digital technologies, federal funding withdrawals and censorship efforts.
Who is the Librarian of Congress and what is the job?
The library’s interim leadership is a point of dispute. Trump appointed Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who represented the president during his 2024 criminal trial, as acting librarian. But staff, awaiting congressional approval of Trump’s permanent pick, have recognized Robert Newlen, who assumed the title upon Hayden’s ouster.
The role ‘s responsibilities range from looking after collections to selecting the country’s poet laureate to awarding the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song and the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction. The library also manages the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service.
Librarians serve 10-year terms, and Hayden’s was scheduled to end in 2026. Her tenure included modernizing its reservoir of the nation’s books and history. She oversaw new initiatives reaching out to rural and online audiences. Recent campaigns sought to improve accessibility for everyday visitors. And she arranged for Lizzo’s 2022 performance where the artist played a crystal flute owned by President James Madison — among the Library’s troves of artifacts.
Before her confirmation in 2016, Hayden spent more than two decades as CEO of Baltimore’s Enoch Pratt Free Library system and was president of the American Library Association from 2003 to 2004. A graduate of Roosevelt University and the University of Chicago, she is a member of the American Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
These days, Donnie Seals, Sr. has a lot to celebrate. For years, the 72-year-old has struggled with heart health issues due to unhealthy diet and lifestyle habits. By age 50, he had gone through three open-heart surgeries, including a quintuple bypass, according to Cycling Weekly. But Donnie isn’t hitting the road alone. His son Eric is often by his side. Their rides have not only improved their health, but they have strengthened their bond, as the two have some of their best conversations while they bike. A four-day, 350-mile trip the two took from St. Louis to Chicago is the subject of a PBS documentary, “Bike Vessel,” which Eric directed and edited.
In the film, Donnie Sr. recalls how riding helped him get into shape over time. Although he couldn’t even ride his first bike home from the store, he kept riding around his neighborhood and continued to build up his stamina. Now, he can’t imagine a day that doesn’t include him being on his bike.
“I remember my quarter-mile rides where my legs are burning, and now when I ride, my body isn’t ready to ride until I hit like mile 10,” he said in the film. “If I don’t ride for two days, I literally go through withdrawls.”
In a period of two years, Donnie Sr’s healthy new habit has allowed doctors to wean him off of a prescription drug regimen of nearly 20 pills per day.
“My cardiologist said my biking is my medication, so as long as I’m biking, I should never have to go back to this stuff,” he said in the film.
Eric hopes “Bike Vessel” will shine a light on health issues in the Black community.
“It is important to us that we not only showcase what an unhealthy lifestyle can lead to but also provide a pathway forward and show what types of adjustments can be made to live a lasting, healthy life,” the film’s website reads.

Netflix has finally dropped the eagerly awaited trailer for Alice in Borderland Season 3, and fans are losing their minds. The new season drops September 25, 2025, and original stars Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya are returning to their roles as Arisu and Usagi, their lives forever altered by the collective trauma and love they’ve experienced.

In the wake of Season 2’s shocking finale, Arisu and Usagi seemed to have cleared the last game and escaped the Borderland. Global Obsession, Unfinished Business
Since its launch in 2020, Alice in Borderland has been Netflix’s most beloved Japanese original. Its combination of dystopian thriller, high-stakes games, and tear-jerking storylines reminded viewers of Squid Game, but die-hard fans insist Alice is darker, wiser, and more heart-wrenching.
With only a single card left, the question persists. What is the Joker? A trickster god? A final test? An entrance to death or redemption?
We will all find out when Alice in Borderland Season 3 will release on September 25, 2025, exclusively on Netflix.
Since the world learned of the relationship between Meagan Good and Jonathan Majors during his domestic violence trial back in late 2023—he was found guilty for two misdemeanor charges but not guilty for the more serious felony offenses and avoided jail time in the case—the couple has been very intentional about trying to protect their peace. They supported one another through the trial and the public scrutiny and awkward comments (Majors referred to Good as his Coretta and ignited a maelstrom of internet commentary), eventually getting announcing to the world that they were married in March 2025.
They’ve supported one another through their film projects—Majors’ 2025 buzzy film “Magazine Dreams” and Good’s latest, 2024’s “Divorce In The Black,” a film from Tyler Perry—but now they’ve decided to join forces and launch a wellness brand, called “Honor Culture.”
Launching the brand via Instagram (as most people do nowadays), Good and Majors released several jointly tagged black-and-white photos that show, if nothing else, just how in-shape the couple is. Love or hate what you know about their union and his actions, body goals is definitely a descriptor for the couple. According to Hot97, “a wellness brand that blends fitness, mental health, and community-building into one lifestyle platform,” though it is unclear if that description came from a press release.
There are three posts under the Honor Culture IG page, with several pictures that don’t necessarily clearly indicate what the brand is or will be (will there be clothing? Books? A lot of manifesting?) but the IG page bio says: MindBody + Wellness + Culture
[Fitness] [Lifestyle] [Culture]. The pictures definitely display fitness and perhaps a peaceful, serene lifestyle that definitely includes things like matcha, but we’ll have to wait for more specifics. Which makes sense; the caption for the posts attached to the brand’s launch all say, “Stay Tuned.” One also lets us know to “Honor Your Healing. Honor Your Story,” which is as good as advice as you can get out there for free.
While we will learn what “Honor Culture” is eventually, it’s clear that this represents a joint vision and effort between Good and Majors and presents, perhaps, their singular mission statement as a couple and traversing the terrain of interpersonal relationships, especially as they navigate Hollywood and the community together.
For now though, we’ll all have to appreciate the photos they shared and wonder if their actual workout regiment is something we, as regular people, can actually do to look good as they do.
Leave it to a Black woman to be bold enough to stand up to President Donald Trump. While it seems the rest of the conservative-leaning Supreme Court is dead set on championing Trump’s agenda, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson stands out as one of the few justices willing to call him out, which is putting a target on her back.

As arguably one of the most powerful Black women in the country right now, Jackson draws a stark contrast between herself and the other liberal justices on the bench. Despite her being the court’s newest justice, Jackson isn’t afraid to ruffle some feathers, which has folks thinking she might be the answer in the face of deportations, anti-DEI legislation and more.
Her most recent dissents– or disagreement with a majority court opinion– are clear examples of this. Last month, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the president in the Trump v. CASA case concerning birthright citizenship. Although the court didn’t rule directly on the 14th Amendment, Jackson took some time to call out her colleagues to look at the history and impact of the 14th Amendment for free Black people in antebellum America.
She urged her fellow justices to evaluate the case not only based on technical language but more importantly, the impact on American lives. And to be expected, her conservative peers weren’t happy about it. “We will not dwell on Justice Jackson’s argument, which is at odds with more than two centuries’ worth of precedent, not to mention the Constitution itself,” Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote.
This wouldn’t be the first time Jackson spoke out about questionable rulings. Since she put on that black robe, Jackson has been more outspoken than her peers. Since October, Jackson reportedly spoke 50 percent more than Justice Sotomayor, who was ranked second most talkative, according to statistics by Adam Feldman and Jake S. Truscott for the Empirical SCOTUS blog.
More interestingly, Jackson’s clear stance draw stark contrast to the other Black justice on the bench, Clarence Thomas. Although Thomas is known for his colorful dissents over the past decades, even writing in an opinion that the court should “reexamine” a 150-year-old Civil Rights era statute, according to Newsweek.
Thomas often bases his dissents on an originalist view of the Constitution. Unlike Jackson, Thomas usually stresses the Constitution’s original form, not how it is interpreted today. With this, the conservative justice has caught his fair share of backlash. With his alignment– and his wife’s alignment– with Trump and MAGA, folks have often called for him to resign… not like he’ll ever do it though.
Compared to Thomas, Jackson is a breath of fresh air. As one of the youngest members on the court, she often uses her platform to connect with all Americans. “She’s the only one that has ever done what she’s doing in terms of total volume of speech in her first few terms,” Feldman of the Empirical SCOTUS blog continued.
Of course this is not the end of the Trump administration or the impact of all the flood of bills he’s been signing in the Oval Office. But as long as Jackson has the American people covered, then we know there’s at least one ally inside the count room.
Scarlett Johansson did it again. Four years after she bid adieu to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Black Widow, the actress returns to topping the box office with a roar. Her new dino-filled blockbuster Jurassic World: Rebirth not only took over theatres around the world, but it’s also made history books by being the highest-grossing lead actor of all time, pre-inflation.
Johansson has now surpassed Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson, her Marvel co-stars and cinematic titans in their own right, with a $318 million overseas opening in six days for Rebirth. That puts her career box office at a staggering $14.8 billion in lead or lead ensemble roles, according to The Numbers.
And yes, that’s before any inflation adjustment. It’s a landmark that arrives all the more thrilling because it wasn’t handed to her through another Marvel rehash, but by something entirely different. Her darker transformation into Zora Bennett, an ex-military asset entering the last uncharted isle full of dinosaurs after Jurassic World: Dominion, is a bold gamble-performance. Johansson brings it all, with grit, sorrow, and a touch of that wry humor we all adored in Natasha Romanoff.
Let’s not forget that over half of her entire box office total is an enormous $8.7 billion, which was earned through her MCU appearances as Black Widow in movies such as Avengers: Endgame, Infinity War, and Captain America: Civil War. But Johansson’s CV goes way past red locks and spycraft. She has repeatedly proven she can do an action movie, voice an edgy porcupine in Sing, break our hearts in Marriage Story, and even lead us to believe in love between a man and a computer operating system in Her.
So to watch her step back into the spotlight once more and still reign feels like justice for all the cinephiles who have seen her transform across genres for almost two decades. And it’s especially gratifying because of the irony. Johansson was the sole remaining Avengers original member without a standalone film. Now, she wears the crown.
One of the five highest-grossing lead actors of all time globally, Jackson, Downey Jr., Chris Pratt, and Tom Hanks. The only female. The only non-Marvel man among them? America’s dad, Tom Hanks. And while Downey Jr. might be able to reclaim his position in December 2026 when Avengers: Doomsday debuts, Scarlett’s record is a strong memory. Box office gold isn’t just about spandex and superpowers. It is about presence. Command. Versatility.
Of course, already, the whispers are emanating from fans. Will she return as Natasha Romanoff in a multiverse cameo in Secret Wars? Johansson has suggested that her MCU days are behind her, but come on. If there’s one thing that the Marvel universe can’t help but resist more than a dramatic return, it’s a loophole. And if there’s one thing we can’t help but resist more than a box office queen, it’s a box office queen who won’t be guessed.
For now, at least, one thing is certain. Jurassic World: Rebirth is not a comeback, it’s a coronation. And Scarlett Johansson, our chameleon of celluloid, is where she belongs, at the top of the cinematic ranks.
Target is starting to feel like that toxic situationship we all warn each other about: the one doing the absolute most to win you back without ever apologizing for the damage they caused.
Black communities across the country are still actively boycotting the retail giant over its rollback of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. And instead of addressing those concerns directly, Target seems to be betting big on performative partnerships to win folks back. The latest move? Teaming up with popular streamer Kai Cenat and his content collective, AMP (Any Means Possible), to launch a personal care brand called “TONE,” available exclusively at Target.
The group, which includes Cenat, Duke Dennis, Agent 00, ChrisNxtDoo, and ImDavisss, kicked off the campaign with a livestream sleepover inside a Target store. But while AMP celebrated the moment, viewers were far more conflicted. The internet was quick to point out the contradiction: Black creators partnering with a brand that not only pulled back its DEI commitments, but has also repeatedly fumbled opportunities to repair that harm, even in meetings with groups like the Congressional Black Caucus and Rev. Al Sharpton.
Some labeled the collaboration a sellout move, but faith leader Pastor Jamal Bryant, who’s led the ongoing “Target Fast,” made clear that the real issue lies with the corporation, not the influencers.
“If @target would spend as much energy and resources meeting the demands of the target fast @targetfast40 as they are on influencers, paying preachers, and going to @essencefest, we would be further along,” Bryant wrote on Instagram. “Doing what’s right for our people is always made to feel like an inconvenience. Stand on business and don’t go back in until they handle us right!”
Journalist Jemele Hill also didn’t hold back, drawing parallels between Target’s tactics and the NFL’s past efforts to gloss over controversy with big-name Black talent: “Target is spineless. They don’t want to anger Donald Trump, so they won’t publicly apologize or rectify what they’ve done. Instead, they’re going to keep throwing checks at certain members of the Black community, hoping we will lose our will to fight. They’re just waiting to give the right Black celebrity a check so that it will galvanize people to return,” she commented, noting how the NFL strategically partnered with Jay-Z at the peak of the Colin Kaepernick controversy. “Eventually, Target is going to partner with someone who is universally beloved in our community, force folks to make a hard decision, and run this same game.”

This all comes on the heels of this year’s Essence Festival, where Target had a significant installation inside the convention center. But unlike previous years, where lines stretched long for goodie bags and photo ops at the retailer’s booth, TikTok videos show a different story: sparse crowds, a quiet but clear sign of the ongoing boycott. Ahead of the event, leaders like Bryant, Tamika D. Mallory, and Nina Turner encouraged attendees to enjoy the festival but steer clear of Target activations entirely.
“Over the past few months, you may feel like you’ve heard more about Target than you’ve heard from Target. And that’s fair. I’ve been listening to our team, our partners, our guests and our communities; thank you for your honesty, your feedback and your patience. Let me be clear: our commitment to opportunity for all and inclusion is unwavering. These values are foundational to how we serve our guests, support our team and grow our business,” Target’s CEO Brian Cornell said in a statement about the brand partnership.
No doubt, the launch of TONE is a major milestone for AMP, a group that’s built their success organically through streaming and community support. But their partnership with Target also casts an even brighter light on the corporation’s avoidance of accountability. Despite reported dips in foot traffic, sales, and stock performance, Target still refuses to name, and address, the root of the issue.

Born Rufus Lee Cooper III, Young Noble reportedly died by suicide, according to TMZ. As of this writing, the details remain unclear, though initial reports suggest he used a handgun.
Fellow Outlawz member E.D.I. Mean shared the news on Instagram: “My brother and partner for over 30 years took his life this morning. Rest in Power Rufus Young Noble Cooper…PLEASE give his family and I some time to process this. Mental illness is a real battle being fought by so many.”
Noble’s death is yet another a reminder of the alarming suicide rates in the Black community. Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in America, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. But within the Black community, the numbers are even scarier: One in three rural Black men reported suicidal thoughts within a controlled two-week period, according to a 2024 study from the University of Georgia.
Black men nationally are four times more likely to commit suicide compared to Black women, according to GoodRx. And unfortunately, there’s not a lot of research on the causes or any solutions.
“I think we often don’t look at where the disparities are and who the individuals most at risk are when we’re talking about suicide ideation,” Michael Curtis, co-author of the study and a graduate of UGA’s Human Development and Family Science Department in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, told the University of Georgia. “We just know it’s bad, and particularly among young Black men.”
Researchers attribute depression, other mental health issues, drug and alcohol addiction as leading causes to suicide. But for Black men growing up in low-resource environments, racial discrimination and wealth gaps make this demographic more susceptible to feelings of isolation, which can prompt suicide, according to UGA.
“The narrowing racial gap in suicide rates tells us that this emergent issue among Black youth warrants attention now,” the report adds. “A cadre of Black researchers from across the United States has been ringing the alarm to raise awareness about this disturbing trend.”
Mental health issues don’t always start in adulthood. According to healthline.com, experts acknowledged Black youth are less likely to receive mental health care due to access to services and the negative stigma within their communities. So instead, they suffer through youth and adulthood… until they ultimately do the unthinkable.
