As President Donald Trump continues to call out urban cities led by Black mayors amid his proclaimed “crime emergency” in Washington, D.C., Wes Moore, the governor of neighboring Maryland, has invited the president to visit his state for a walking tour of Baltimore.

The invitation, which was included in a letter addressed to Trump on Thursday, is intended to showcase Baltimore’s progress in reducing crime rates in recent years.

“In the first six months of 2025, the Baltimore Police Department continued to see double-digit reductions in gun violence, including a 22% decrease in homicides and a 19% decrease in non-fatal shootings from the year before,” Moore told the president. He added, “We are currently on track to have the lowest number of homicides in Baltimore City since we began officially keeping crime statistics.”

Moore, Maryland’s first Black governor, highlighted that homicides in Maryland have also been down 20% statewide since he took office two and a half years ago.

The Maryland governor, a former U.S. Army captain who was deployed in Afghanistan, has been a vocal critic of Trump’s deployment of the National Guard in D.C. and his threats to do the same in cities like Baltimore, which the president has said are “so far gone” as it relates to crime.

Last week, Trump personally called out Moore after the Maryland leader said that the military is not trained to police and that it posed a danger to U.S. citizens.

“They talk about him as a candidate. He’s got no chance. The governor of Maryland….they say maybe he’ll be a president. He’s not presidential timber [sic] at all,” said Trump.

In his letter to the president, Moore said, “You responded to my concerns about the deployment of National Guard personnel for municipal policing in Washington, D.C. by insulting me personally from the Oval Office. So I wanted to write in order to clarify the root of my frustration and extend an invitation for you to visit Maryland, where we can discuss strategies for effective public safety policy.”

Gov. Moore touted his state’s commitment to invest in “proven strategies” to make neighborhoods safer. He said that work is being done despite the Trump administration’s “millions of dollars in cuts to federal funding for violence intervention and gun violence prevention.”

The Maryland governor said that, as part of his state’s “broad approach” to public safety, he regularly joins community advocates and elected officials to “walk through the neighborhoods most affected by violent crime.”

“I would like to formally invite you to attend our next public safety walk in September, at a date of your choosing,” Moore wrote to Trump, adding, “In Maryland and in Baltimore, you will find people who share the same commitment to public safety that I have–and who want to be part of the solution, not the problem.”

Angela Angel, senior advisor at Black Lives Matter PAC, and a former Maryland state delegate, told theGrio that President Trump should take Gov. Moore up on his offer.

“Come walk the streets of Baltimore with us. See the work that’s been done here in Maryland,” she said. “As a former elected official, I challenge him to do that. But we know he won’t. Because real community engagement doesn’t make for good fascist theater.”

Angel applauded Gov. Moore and Baltimore City Mayor Brandon Scott for the efforts to “transform communities through real leadership, not military occupation” and their “commitment to public safety that actually serves people.”

However, the BLM leader also had strong criticisms for Democrats.

“Where is their energy for Black communities under siege?” she queried. “Where is the full-frontal press at every level of government?”

Custody war between rapper DDG and actress-singer Halle Bailey took a dramatic turn this week after a judge in Los Angeles barred each parent from posting about the other or their little one on social media. The injunction had long been in effect for DDG, but Thursday’s order put Bailey in the same category. The two, once so famous for romantic Instagram video clips and YouTube vlogs, are now legally silenced on the internet, their messy custody battle now deleted from the web.

Behind the Scenes: A First-Time Judge, A Nervous Room

After being tipped off by Cousin Tino, whose tweets live-streamed proceedings in the courtroom, Judge Angela Davis called the case and didn’t hesitate to lay down the rules. The atmosphere became increasingly tense the instant DDG’s mother, as a witness, had to leave outside, and the rapper’s crew looked visibly shaken.

The lawyers from both sides objected to postponing the case, but Judge Davis did not budge and scheduled the second hearing for the 15th of October. October is to be a turning point wherein both extended visitation calendars for both parents as well as extended social media restrictions are on the agenda for consideration.

Prosecution: “DDG Turned Paparazzi Into”

Prosecutors alleged that DDG faked paparazzi photos on a recent ice cream date with his son, making him seem as though he’s cashing in on fatherhood for publicity’s sake. They noted the son shouldn’t be on social media at all and spoke about the manner that DDG’s massive fan base routinely schedules harassment of Halle Bailey every time that she enters his sphere of influence. The prosecutorial bottom line is that, besides keeping DDG from placing the youngster on the net, his visitation rights must be closely monitored as a means to try and avoid “performance parenting” in the presence of a webcam.

Defense: “He Can’t Control the Cameras”

DDG’s lawyer responded by saying that his client had no way of keeping the paparazzi from trailing behind him outside and ruling out the notion of DDG orchestrating photo ops. The defense then responded with a request for overnight visitation and calling for a formal schedule: every Saturday, alternating Sundays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and a mid-week Wednesday visit.

Even his DDG employees permitted visits in his office with monitoring, provided the monitoring was only to prevent photography or video shooting issues but not into his parenting life.

Judgment: Speechlessness, Screens Closed, and a Monitor on High Alert

Ultimately, Judge Davis voted in support of discretion. She made the presence of a monitor effective on visits and adopted the social media restriction by putting both parents on restriction from social media postings on their son.

For the near future, DDG is only granted supervised visitation, potentially more time on the weekends in the long shot that things go uninterrupted until the October hearing. Bailey, refused her right of custody, has also been silenced on social media as well.

NBA Celtics player Jaylen Brown’s name is in the headlines beyond the sports world. On Wednesday, Brown’s father, Quenton Marselles Brown, was reportedly arrested and charged with attempted murder in Las Vegas. 

According to police records, Marselles Brown, who goes by his middle name Marselles, was involved in a parking lot altercation that started over a “door ding” and ended with a stabbing.

The victim’s girlfriend told police that while they were sitting in their car at a Las Vegas sports complex, an SUV parked next to them. When the driver, Marselles, got out of the car, his door made contact with their car, which incited her boyfriend to get out of the car and assess any possible damage. This led to a verbal back-and-forth between Marselles, who is described as having been confrontational, and the victim.

After challenging the victim to a fight, Marselles reportedly lunged at the man when he turned his back, stabbing him multiple times in the back and stomach areas, leaving the victim in critical condition. 

Police later pulled over a vehicle matching the SUV’s description, where they found Marselles, who was reportedly bleeding and had abrasions on his knees. 

“He spontaneously uttered that this was all over a door ding without being asked any questions by Patrol officers,” the LVPD report cites, per News3LV. 

Marselles was arrested and held at Clark County Detention Center on $300,000 bail. After his first court appearance on Thursday, Marselles’s attorney, Arnold Weinstock, told news outlets that Marselles recalls the victim having a gun and using it to hit him in the head. 

“I do not believe that he initiated anything, and he is telling me that everything that occurred was him trying to defend himself after he was struck,” Weinstock continued, sharing that his client will be able to be released on bail “in the next day ot two.” 

Marselles, a former professional boxer, previously shared in an interview how proud he was of his sons Quenton Brown, who played college football for Central Florida and North Texas, and Jaylen Brown, who was drafted to the Celtics in 2016: “I am extremely proud of both my sons. I am especially proud of Jaylen. He is an extraordinary athlete and very smart.”

Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul certainly are getting within reach of ending the country’s unprecedented Grand Slam men’s title drought, so maybe they’re finally ready to win one of those trophies — if anyone other than Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz is ever going to again, that is — at the U.S. Open, which gets going Sunday.

“We have a really strong group. We’re closer; the closest we’ve been in a long time,” said Fritz, a 27-year-old from California who is seeded No. 4 in New York and was the the runner-up to Sinner there a year ago. “We have several players who are at the caliber it takes to win a Grand Slam title. We’re very close. But that last little bit is obviously the hardest part of it.”
