NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Sybil Haydel Morial, a civil rights activist, widow of New Orleans’ first Black mayor, Ernest “Dutch” Morial, and mother to former Mayor, Marc Morial, has died at age 91.

Her family announced her death Wednesday in a statement issued by the National Urban League, which Marc Morial serves as president and CEO. Details on the time and cause of death were not released.

“She confronted the hard realities of Jim Crow with unwavering courage and faith, which she instilled not only in her own children but in every life she touched,” the statement said.

Morial was born Nov. 26, 1932, and raised by her physician father and schoolteacher mother in a deeply segregated New Orleans. She later met the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in Boston and returned home inspired to do her part in the civil rights movement.

In her 2015 memoir, “Witness to Change: From Jim Crow to Empowerment,” Morial described how she and her friends, including the future mayor of Atlanta, Andrew Young, were chased out of New Orleans’ City Park by a police officer because of their skin color.

She attended Xavier University, one of the city’s historically Black higher learning institutions, before transferring to Boston University, where King was pursuing a divinity degree and guest-preaching at churches.

Later, while traveling home, she and other Black passengers had to move to the baggage car when the train crossed the Mason-Dixon line.

“The barricade that kept us out of schools, jobs, restaurants, hotels, and even restrooms would have to be dismantled brick by brick, law by law,” she wrote.

She was in Boston in 1954, the year the Supreme Court issued a landmark decision overturning racial segregation in schools.

“Those of us from the South … We wanted to go back home because we wanted to be a part of change. We knew change was coming,” she said during a 2018 interview with Louisiana Public Broadcasting.

That summer, she tried to integrate New Orleans’ other leading universities — Tulane and Loyola. She signed up for summer sessions at both and attended classes for nearly a week at Tulane while they waited for her transcript to arrive from Boston, but was eventually told that she could not enroll because of her race.

At Loyola, she was told that “according to state law, Negroes cannot attend the same school as whites.”

Her return home in 1954 also brought her face-to-face with the man she would marry: Ernest Nathan “Dutch” Morial. The two fell into an intense discussion about the court’s recent desegregation decision during a summer vacation book club.

They wed the next year and she supported her husband thereafter, raising five children and teaching school while he ran for the state Legislature in 1968 and for mayor in 1978.

She was often the one who had to shield their children from the resulting racist threats, racing for the phone to answer it first.

During Morial’s first mayoral term, National Guard troops were stationed at their house to protect the family during the 1979 police strike that led to the cancellation of Mardi Gras parades.

Sybil Morial also became a city power player in her own right.

She founded the Louisiana League of Good Government, which helped Black people register to vote at a time when they still had to pass tests such as memorizing the Preamble to the Constitution. She also was a plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging a Louisiana law that barred public school teachers from being involved in groups fighting segregation, according to the LSU Women’s Center.

She held various administrative positions over 28 years at Xavier and served on numerous boards and advisory committees across the city.

“Few women have played such an outsized role in the recent history of New Orleans,” former Mayor Mitch Landrieu said in a social media post. Current Mayor LaToya Cantrell called Morial “a New Orleans treasure and trailblazer” and said the city’s flag would fly at half-staff in her honor.

As part of the 1984 World’s Fair in New Orleans, she championed the building of a pavilion dedicated to African American contributions and experiences in American history, and in 1987 she was the executive producer of “A House Divided,” a documentary about desegregation in New Orleans.

After her husband died unexpectedly in 1989 at age 60, Morial wrote that she briefly flirted with the idea of running for mayor in 1994. Instead, her son Marc, then 35, ran and won, launching a second generation of Morial mayors.

Funeral plans have not been announced. Sybil Morial is survived by her five children, seven grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

For months, fans on TikTok and YouTube have been waiting for the dimwitted Amber to discover what has been going on, and finally there’s been movement: Shayla just had Anthony’s baby, and fans are talking.

Throughout this long ordeal, readers in comments have noticed the bad writing and confusing storylines, but remain obsessed to know when will Amber finally see all the signs from her cheating husband and conniving friend.

Initially portrayed as a cartoon character of sorts, Shayla began to steal the scenes as well as Amber’s husband. Unlike other characters, Shayla seemed more realistic as she struggled with guilt and love for Anthony and Amber and as fans started to see her changing her ways after meeting sweet-giant-of-a-man Michael Bless, who has shown her love despite friends laughing at him for falling in love with a pregnant woman.

Viewers love Shayla and Michael together, but Wayne likely didn’t expect that the former would become the main attraction.

There’s also a whole community of viewers who are even hoping Anthony and Shayla will capitalize on their sexual energy. But as Shayla’s character starts to feel real, others characters have taken an opposite turn: There are countless scenes in which Amber awkwardly starts praying out loud as if she’s in a play or speaks in an annoyingly sugary sweet-tone about how much she loves Shayla.

But maybe worst is a recent scene as Shayla can’t keep her eyes open after she just had her baby, but the iPhone camera stays on annoying Amber who is holding the newborn baby with the creepiest smile. It seems like Wayne is trying to recreate Amber into a Black-female-Job of sorts who just keeps getting the shit kicked out of her before she gets all her gifts.

But you can’t squeeze a hole into a square. And Wayne — a brilliant businessman who pays his actors six figures — might not be to blame for not building on the chemistry he has in Shayla and Anthony.

Bad writing aside, if the real Amber (Amber Tai) created the triangle, good for her. In a recent scene with Anthony and Shayla, the two are sitting together on the couch in the apartment that Antony has secretly bought for Shayla to live in. Shayla is worn out after giving birth to a child that looks more like a healthy toddler than a 1-day-old.

A few cheeky TikTok users pointed out that she looks pretty well rested.

Others speculate that Anthony might not even be the father.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris has accepted the rules set forth for next week’s debate with former President Donald Trump, although the Democratic nominee says the decision not to keep both candidates’ microphones live throughout the matchup will be to her disadvantage.

The development, which came Wednesday by way of a letter from Harris’ campaign to host network ABC News, seemed to mark a conclusion to the debate over microphone muting, which had for a time threatened to derail the Sept. 10 presidential debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

Harris’ acceptance of the debate rules came as Trump — using a night he had proposed as a debate with Harris on Fox News Channel — instead participated in a solo town hall with host Sean Hannity in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a version of debate preparation with a longtime ally who queried him about his plans to take on the Democratic nominee.

President Joe Biden’s campaign had made the muting of microphones, except for the candidate whose turn it is to speak, a condition of his decision to accept any debates this year. Some aides have said they now regret that decision, saying voters were shielded from hearing Trump’s outbursts during the June debate. A disastrous performance for the incumbent Democrat fueled his exit from the campaign.

Once Harris rose in Biden’s stead and became their party’s pick for president, her campaign had advocated for live microphones for the whole debate, saying previously that the practice would “fully allow for substantive exchanges between the candidates.”

But on Wednesday, in a letter obtained by The Associated Press, Harris’ advisers wrote that the former prosecutor will be “fundamentally disadvantaged by this format, which will serve to shield Donald Trump from direct exchanges with the Vice President.”

“We suspect this is the primary reason for his campaign’s insistence on muted microphones,” her campaign added.

Despite those concerns, Harris’ campaign wrote, “we understand that Donald Trump is a risk to skip the debate altogether, as he has threatened to do previously, if we do not accede to his preferred format.” So as not to “jeopardize the debate,” Harris’ campaign wrote, “we accepted the full set of rules proposed by ABC, including muted microphones.”

According to an official with Harris’ campaign, a pool of journalists will be on hand to hear what the muted candidate may be trying to say when his or her microphone is turned off. That detail was not in the full debate rules, also released Wednesday by ABC, which are essentially the same as they were for the June debate between Trump and Biden.

The network laid out parameters from the basic format — 90 minutes, with two commercial breaks — to specifications that moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis “will be the only people asking questions,” perhaps hoping to avert a free-for-all between the candidates.

“Moderators will seek to enforce timing agreements and ensure a civilized discussion,” the network noted.

The Harris campaign official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss planning around the debate, said a candidate who repeatedly interrupts will receive a warning from a moderator, and both candidates’ microphones may be unmuted if there is significant crosstalk so the audience can understand what’s happening.

After a virtual coin flip held Tuesday and won by Trump, the GOP nominee opted to offer the final closing statement, while Harris chose the podium on the right side of viewers’ screens. There will be no audience, written notes or any topics or questions shared with campaigns or candidates in advance, the network said.

In the town hall on Wednesday, Hannity steered Trump through many of the topics typical of the GOP nominee’s campaign events, with a heavy focus on immigration, and posed questions after showing video clips of Harris in media interviews and other appearances.

Trump also repeatedly returned his focus from Harris to Biden, calling Democrats’ substitution of their top candidate “a coup” and saying he would have preferred a debate with Harris, rather than the town hall.

Asked about next week’s debate, Trump repeated his former criticism of ABC as a “dishonest” and “unfair” network, also reiterating his previous claims that Harris’ campaign is “going to get the questions in advance.”

The location of Trump’s town hall, coupled with next week’s debate in Philadelphia, highlights the importance of battleground Pennsylvania, where 19 Electoral College votes are up for grabs in the November election.

The Will Smith slavery drama “Emancipation” was the subject of controversy, as it was his first major film after the infamous Oscars slap. It received mixed reviews and suffered from the backlash the actor was still caught in during its 2022 release. Turns out, the real drama was happening behind the scenes.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple, the studio behind the film, threatened to pull the production out of Louisiana if lawmakers there didn’t kill a bill that would affect its app store. Tanner Magee, a legislator in the Louisiana House of Representatives, told the outlet that an employee at the tech giant informed him that if he supported a 2021 bill that would allow app developers to use an “alternative payment system” on the app store, Apple was prepared to move the film to another location.

“He basically said that if we didn’t kill the bill, he’d kill the movie and hurt our economy,” Magee said.

Moving a huge film production to another state isn’t as simple as just packing up and leaving, so it’s likely this alleged situation was just a bluff by Apple. However, if true, this is still a disturbing overreach by the powerful corporation. Apple’s spokesperson denied the accusations, telling the Journal, “We always operate with the highest standards of integrity, and allegations that we have not in this instance are false.”

As if that wasn’t enough behind the camera drama for Will, he’s been named in lawsuit connected to another one of his movies.

Do you remember the 2019 action film “Gemini Man?” Since it only made $48 million in North America, we’re guessing you don’t. The Oscar winner played an assassin who quits the business, then finds himself fighting off a clone of his younger self. The “Bad Boys” star is being dragged into a legal battle over it.

According to In Touch Weekly, the actor is one of several defendants named in a copyright infringement lawsuit. Kissinger Sibanda is reportedly an attorney and writer who alleges his 2011 book was the basis for “the film’s marketing strategy – taking themes, plots, characterizations, context and cultural subtexts.” He claims he told Smith’s stunt double about his book in 2012, though he can’t remember the stunt double’s name. He also allegedly sent the book to talent agency William Morris Endeavor. It’s worth noting that a lot of agencies will not open unsolicited materials. The screenplay is credited to David Benioff, Billy Ray and Darren Lemke, with Benioff and Lemke given story credit.

Will recently made his big comeback to mainstream popularity with the success of “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.” We’re sure the last thing he wants right now is to be dragged into legal issues over two films he’d probably rather move on from.

The pop star’s latest album, Short n’ Sweet, has debuted at #1 on the chart, marking a significant milestone in her music career. With 362,000 units sold (184,000 in pure sales), this is Sabrina’s first time reaching the summit of the Billboard 200, and it’s been a long time coming.

Carpenter’s journey to #1 hasn’t been without its challenges. From her early days on Disney Channel to establishing herself as a formidable pop artist, she’s steadily climbed the ranks of the music industry. Her previous albums have seen varying degrees of success on the Billboard 200: emails I can’t send peaked at #23, Evolution reached #28, and Eyes Wide Open hit #43. But now, Short n’ Sweet has done what none of her previous work could—take the top spot.

However, this victory wasn’t without drama. The battle for #1 was neck-and-neck, with only 1,000 units separating Sabrina from Travis Scott, whose re-released mixtape Days Before Rodeo debuted at #2 with 361,000 units (331,000 pure sales). Initially, it seemed like Scott would come out on top, but a last-minute surge over the weekend pushed Carpenter ahead. According to sources close to Luminate, the music industry’s primary data provider, Scott had the edge early in the week, but Sabrina’s fans showed up in force, propelling her to victory by Monday.

The race was so close that Luminate delayed the official announcement, usually made on Sunday, to ensure all sales were accurately counted. The data provider, which tracks sales from Friday through Thursday, was still receiving updates when the weekend arrived, making the outcome uncertain until the final numbers came in.

Short n’ Sweet has dominated streaming charts, with the album’s lead single, “Espresso,” becoming an unofficial anthem of the summer. BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — A year ago, Deion Sanders made the matchup with fellow coach Matt Rhule and Nebraska personal.

This season, there’s nothing but praise.

The Colorado coach commended his rival days before the Buffaloes traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska, for the final meeting between the teams for the foreseeable future. Sanders said he feels like the two are part of the same coaching fraternity since they arrived around the same time and both were tasked with turning around programs.

Both coaches hit rocky patches along the way in Year 1 — Sanders and the Buffaloes finishing 4-8, while Rhule and the Cornhuskers went 5-7.

“I have a ton of respect for Matt Rhule,” Sanders said Tuesday at his weekly news conference. “He’s in, I call it, our class of coaches. … So I root for that class of head coaches that came in that year. He was a professional, did a phenomenal job, maybe not the job that he aspired to do, but he has a ton of experience, and I love what he’s accomplished in his college coaching career.”

That’s quite a contrast from last season, when the Buffaloes’ theme for Nebraska week was, “This is personal.” It was an ode to the history of the rivalry and of the Buffaloes taking note of some critical comments out of Lincoln that spring. What drew the Buffaloes’ ire, in particular, was Rhule speaking about how excited he was to coach the players he inherited when he took over the program while others appeared more anxious about players arriving through the transfer portal.

They do well in school. They don’t get in trouble off the field and they compete. I respect that with what they do.”

Colorado and Nebraska were longtime rivals when both were in some version of the Big 12. The Cornhuskers moved to the Big Ten in 2011 and the Buffaloes bolted to the Pac-12. But Colorado returned to the Big 12 this season.

Deion Sanders has already started preparing his team for the noise that awaits from the sea of red inside the stadium. Sanders also said long snapper Camden Dempsey, whom he refers to as “the Governor,” addressed the team.

“I’m pretty sure you’re not going to see anybody on the team wearing red anywhere this week because he politely allowed us to know that’s a ‘no-no,’” said Sanders, whose team beat North Dakota State 31-26 in the season opener. “I love it. I think that’s what college football is all about, whether we’re in the same conferences or not. This is a tremendous rivalry, and I look forward to it.”

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. But in the case of the latest cover of The New Yorker, the picture is worth thousands of social media comments. Since its founding in 1925, the magazine has been known for its iconic (and often controversial) cover images that get people talking.

The cover of the September 9, 2024 issue is the latest, and this time, Black people have had plenty to say about it. The image, which accompanies the story, “A Mother’s Work: A Glimpse Into the Lives of New York’s Caretakers,” depicts two women of color on the playground caring for white children. A closer look at the image reveals one woman showing the other a picture on her phone of a student (who is likely her child) wearing a cap and gown.

Since the cover was released, it has incited a pretty heated discussion on practically every social media platform about the history of Black and Brown women caring for white children – often at the expense of their own. A picture of this practice, which dates back to the time of slavery, is for many commenters a painful reminder of the past.

“I don’t think anybody understands the fire that lights inside of me when I see women of color pushing little white babies through Manhattan. I will never understand how in 2024 we still have these little tricklings of slavery in our day-to-day living because why are white people still not taking care of their kids?” said one TikToker in a post that has received over 14,000 likes.

She goes on to say that white people view people of color as simply people who do services for them rather than people they want to have living next door or sitting in classrooms next to their children.

The image also struck a nerve with many people of color who recalled their own parents and grandparents who worked as nannies missing special events because of their obligation to the families they worked for.

“My mom takes care of two young girls. The first time she took off was for my grandmothers funeral and later for my graduation. This hits closer to home than not,” wrote another person on Instagram.

But one of the most powerful comments came from a person who pointed out that in these jobs filled by women who are often immigrants and more often Black and Brown, there are no benefits or paid time off. And that means missing one day of work can have devastating consequences.

“I felt this in my soul, and heart. As a person who had a mother do this job, I get it and continue think about this everyday. She couldn’t come to an event bc she couldn’t miss a day of work, because there is no calling out, especially if you’re working off the books. You don’t show up, you don’t get paid. So they are taking care of someone else’s child, while their child has to be latch key kid and wait for them to come home,” wrote someone on Instagram.

Rest in peace to Simone Biles’ signature vault routine.

This week, the Olympic gold medalist bid farewell to the “world’s most difficult vault” in a satirical Instagram photoshoot. To announce that she will no longer perform the Yurchenko double pike vault, also known as the “Biles II,” the Olympian staged a “funeral,” posing on the vault in an all-white tracksuit surrounded by an array of white flowers. 

“Rest in peace Yurchenko double pike,” Biles captioned the post. 

According to NBC Sports analyst and former Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez, the Yurchenko double pike is one of the most difficult moves in the sport, requiring immense strength and technique. 

“The only way I could describe this vault compared to what we typically see is like seeing someone put on a mask and being like, ‘I’m a vigilante,’ versus just Ironman,” Hernandez told Today.com. “You have to be strong so that way you’re able to brace for impact. You have to be strong so that way you can hit the table, tighten up and get enough height to add one more flip, and then be really smart in the air and have a sense of air awareness that Simone is known for having…I cannot express this enough, this is really hard. It’s extremely difficult.”

Biles stunned fans when she successfully stuck the move for the first time in May 2021 at the GK U.S. Classic. Her execution of the unprecedented move helped her earn the all-around title in that competition. However, while competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (which took place in 2021 due to the pandemic), Biles had to withdraw from the final competition after experiencing “the twisties” during her vault performance. The “twisties,” which she describes as a moment “when your mind and your body are at a disconnect,” is a gymnastics-related phenomenon that can lead to severe injuries. 

Overcoming the twisties, Biles successfully performed the move again at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Belgium, leading fans to rename the vault move in her honor. That same move helped Biles win three gold medals in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Though the gymnast’s followers were shocked by her decision to no longer do the move, they loved Biles’ comedic announcement. 

“Gone, but literally never forgotten,” USA Gymnastics commented under the post. 

Though Biles has not confirmed whether or not she will participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, she says her plans for the near future are “to relax and see where life takes [her].” In the meantime, she is encouraging fans to tune in to the 2024 Paralympic Games, currently in progress in Paris.
