Rep. Jasmine Crockett gets emotional sharing Kamala Harris story at DNC

[ad_1]

U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, took to the stage on night one of the Democratic National Committee Convention, delivering a fiery and, at one point, emotional speech at the United Center in Chicago.

Crockett, a freshman congresswoman whose popularity skyrocketed in recent months due to several viral moments on Capitol Hill, drew much applause and internet reactions following her DNC address.

The 43-year-old Texas lawmaker was notably brought to tears while sharing a personal story about an encounter she had with Vice President Kamala Harris, who on Thursday will be coronated as the Democratic Party’s first Black female and South Asian nominee.

“What I love about Kamala Harris goes beyond her resume. It’s that she sees the humanity in everyone,” said Crockett. “She’s the only candidate in this race who is capable of empathy.”

The congresswoman recalled visiting Harris’ vice presidential residence in Washington, D.C., shortly after being sworn into office. Crockett admitted she wasn’t in a great place emotionally, revealing, “When I first got to Congress, I wasn’t sure I made the right decision.”

Crockett said as she approached Harris to take a photograph, the vice president noticed something was wrong.

“She turned to me and asked, ‘What’s wrong?’ Mind you, we never met, but she saw right through me. She saw the distress, and I immediately began crying,” the congresswoman shared. She added, “The most powerful woman in the world wiped my tears and listened.”

“You are exactly where God wants you. Your district chose you because they believe in you, and so do I,” Harris said to Crockett, according to the congressswoman.

During her speech, Crockett also praised Harris’ career as a “good prosecutor” who “we long for in the cases like those of Breonna Taylor.”

“She was the first attorney general in the nation to order that her officers wear body cams, and she started the Back on Track program to reduce recidivism,” noted the former public defender.

By contrast to Harris becoming a “career prosecutor,” Crockett said Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump “became a career criminal with 34 felonies, two impeachments and one porn star to prove it.”

Crockett had other fiery one-liners for Trump, including an alliterative assail that characterized the former president as a “vindictive, vile villain” who threatens to “violate voters’ vision for a better America.”

“We deserve better,” she said of the choice between Trump and Harris. “We deserve a president who can be a bright light in a sea of darkness, one … who will pull us forward because we won’t go back.”

Amanda Gorman said it best: There’s always light if only we are brave enough to see it. If only we are brave enough to be it,” Crockett added, referring to the famed young poet who gained national notoriety after reciting her original poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Biden’s 2021 inauguration.

“Kamala Harris showed me that light,” she continued. “And America, when she is our president, together, we will shine as that beacon of hope and freedom around the world once more.”

John Legend’s daughter sees herself in Kamala Harris: ‘Excited to see someone who’s Black and Asian like she is’

[ad_1]

John Legend is speaking out about his daughter’s admiration of Vice President Kamala Harris.

The “Green Light” singer revealed in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter that his and wife Chrissy Teigen’s oldest daughter, Luna, 8, looks up to the Vice President because she sees herself in her.

“[Luna] is so excited to see someone who’s Black and Asian like she is, [and] a woman like she is — so she’s looking at [Kamala] like, ‘This is me’ up there,” Legend said. “For her to see that, of course, is really inspiring, and she’s excited, and she can’t imagine why anyone would vote for Donald Trump, but that’s another issue.”

Legend’s comments come the same week he is scheduled to perform at a private event during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, according to THR. “The All of Me” singer will headline a concert, hosted by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, at the Salt Shed on Tuesday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Legend told THR that he and his family, which also includes sons Miles and Wren and daughter Esti, have visited the White House and met with Harris several times. The “Used to Love U” singer is supportive of Harris’ campaign for president, arguing that “change at the top of the ticket was needed to get the excitement that we have right now.”

“You can just feel the rush of mobilization and involvement and volunteering and donating and wanting to go out and get other friends to vote,” Legend said. “You just see that rush that wasn’t there before.”

Legend added that he thinks “people were kind of apathetic about voting for two 80-year-olds, and they were ready for some new energy and some new excitement. And I’m truly grateful to President Biden for making that sacrifice, because the default for any president, especially someone who’s had as successful a first term as he has, is to run for re-election.”

“He understood that that wasn’t necessarily the best thing for the country, and he did something that was really graceful and patriotic by stepping down and allowing a new generation to step up,” Legend concluded. “And I think that act has inspired so many people, and it’s a beautiful thing. I love seeing it.”

Diddy Accuser Files Police Report Over Trafficking Allegations

[ad_1]

A woman who previously accused Sean “Diddy” Combs of sex trafficking in a civil lawsuit is now making her allegations official, by filing a police report with the Miami Beach Police Department.

According to TMZ, Adria English went to the authorities last week and shared many of the same details she outlined in her lawsuit back in July. However, police felt they did not receive enough evidence to investigate the allegations. But they did say that they will share the report with federal authorities, who are also investigating the controversial hip-hop mogul.

Even with this recent police report, English is still not done. She also plans on filing another police report against Combs in New York City shortly.

In the lawsuit she filed in July, English, a former adult film actress, claims that Combs hired her to work as a go-go-dance at several of his all-white parties over the years in Miami, New York, and the Hamptons. In each instance she was invited, English claims that she was “forced” to take part in sex work.

According to the TMZ report, she accepted the dancing gigs to help her then-boyfriend get a modeling job — but claims that he didn’t get that gig after refusing to give Combs oral sex.

She adds that at the parties, she was coerced to take drugs and drink liquor that was laced with ecstasy. This led to her being unable to recall specific details from some of these events.

In the lawsuit, English says that she “has lived her adult life with the memories of being trapped in a cycle of sex trafficking she never asked to be a part of and was chosen because Defendant Combs knew he could groom her.”

Along with Combs, in the lawsuit she named Bad Boy Entertainment Holdings, Inc., Vibe Magazine, and Penske Media Corporation, claiming that they helped organize said white parties.

University of Missouri student group ‘heartbroken’ after it was told to rename its Welcome Black BBQ

[ad_1]

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — A Black student group at a flagship Missouri university that was roiled by protests over race nearly a decade ago said it was forced to rename an upcoming barbecue the Welcome Black and Gold BBQ instead of the Welcome Black BBQ.

The Legion of Black Collegians at the University of Missouri said in a post on Instagram that it spent months fighting the decision and was “heartbroken.” But the university defended the change in a statement, saying the modification was made to reflect that the campus is “welcoming to all.”

“In striving for an inclusive university, we must not exclude (or give impressions that we are excluding) individuals with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives,” university spokesperson Christopher Ave said in the statement.

The Legion of Black Collegians started in 1968 after the song “Dixie” was played at a football game while students waved a Confederate flag, the group explained on its website. “Dixie” celebrates life in the old South and originated in blackface minstrel shows. Critics have said the term is racially insensitive.

The group describes itself as “the only Black Student Government in the Nation.” It said all other schools have a Black Student Union or a Black Student Alliance.

The group said in the Instagram post that the barbecue is a staple for incoming and returning Black students. At one point it considered canceling the event, but now is encouraging members to attend on Friday and resist “any further changes to our fundamental programming.”

“We are looking into all avenues to NEVER allow this to happen again. If it does, rest assured the Legion will have nothing to do with it,” the post said. “The erasure of the names and visibility of our events will continue to erode our presence on this campus, and we plan to do everything we can to divest from that.”

The name-change dustup comes after massive protests erupted in 2015 on the Columbia campus over the administration’s handling of racial slurs and other racist acts. More than 30 Black football team members said they wouldn’t play until the university’s president was removed and one student went on a hunger strike.

How Being “Demure” Became a Viral TikTok Trend

[ad_1]

If you’ve been anywhere on TikTok in the past week, you’ve likely heard of the “demure” trend which has just about everyone talking about how to show up any and everywhere being cute and classy rather than crass and uncouth.

But if you’ve missed out on all of the chatter, don’t worry: Lucky for you, we’ve spent more time than we care to admit out loud soaking up every ounce of “demure” content and controversy we could.

So let’s break it down:

TikTok creator Jools Lebron (aka Miss Demure) is credited with kicking off the trend by posting now-viral video clips demonstrating how to do everything from applying makeup for work to boarding an airplane to enjoying a late-night tuna snack while being demure, which they define as “very cutesy, very mindful.”

See for yourself:

The videos have received tons of views and likes and have inspired others to demonstrate their takes on the trend. Check out this user showing followers how to be demure at Chipotle of all places:

Celebrities are even getting in on the act, posting examples of themselves being “very mindful, very demure.” Check out WNBA player Angel Reese showing off her “demure” hair:

Then there’s Khloe Kardashian’s “demure” makeup post:

And in case you didn’t know, folding the pages to hold your place in a book is so not demure, according to RuPaul, who said bookmarks are the way to go.

Like everything else on social media, nothing trends forever. But Jools is definitely riding the wave in the best way. Check out this collab on how to do “demure” foundation with beauty industry heavy hitter, Patrick Ta:

But social media wouldn’t be the deliciously messy space that keeps people coming back for more if there wasn’t some drama, and this trend is no exception. In this video, creator Selyna Brillare accuses Jools of taking credit for something they came up with years ago.

But some on the platform say neither can claim they started trend, insisting that that it was none other than “The Nanny” star Fran Drescher’s character who is the real OG of all things demure.

Consider yourself caught up. Unfortunately, the time you read this, TikTok will have likely moved on to something else!

Black Woman Convicted of Killing Man Who Molested and Sex Trafficked Her – Where Is The Buzz

[ad_1]

A 24-year-old woman, Chrystul Kizer, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison followed by five years of supervised probation for the 2018 killing of her alleged sex trafficker, Randall Volar. The case, which has sparked intense debate about the complexities of sex trafficking and the law, has drawn national attention.

According to Kizer, she first encountered Volar on a sex trafficking website and was subsequently subjected to repeated sexual abuse and forced prostitution. These traumatic experiences, she claims, culminated in the fatal shooting of Volar at his Kenosha home in 2018. Following the homicide, Kizer allegedly set fire to the house and fled the scene in Volar’s BMW.

Law enforcement charged Kizer with first-degree intentional homicide, arson, car theft, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. However, her defense team argued that the 2008 state law protecting sex trafficking victims from prosecution for crimes committed as a direct result of trafficking applied to her case. While prosecutors conceded the validity of the law, they contended that it did not shield Kizer from the homicide charge.

In a plea deal aimed at avoiding a lengthy trial and potential life sentence, Kizer pleaded guilty to second-degree reckless homicide. As a result, she was sentenced to 11 years in prison and five years of extended supervision. With credit for time served, Kizer will spend approximately eight years behind bars.

The case has ignited a passionate public discourse about the rights of sex trafficking victims and the challenges faced by the justice system in addressing these complex issues. Some argue that Kizer’s sentence is too lenient given the severity of the crimes, while others maintain that her actions were a desperate attempt to escape a horrific situation.

Local residents have expressed mixed reactions to the verdict. “I don’t think they got this one right,” said one neighbor, reflecting a sentiment shared by many. Others, however, believe that the sentence strikes a fair balance between punishing Kizer for her actions and acknowledging the circumstances that led to the crime.
