John Lewis statue replaces Confederate monument in Georgia

[ad_1]

DECATUR, Ga. (AP) — A large bronze statue of the late civil rights icon leader and Georgia congressman John Lewis was installed Friday, at the very spot where a contentious monument to the confederacy stood for more than 110 years in the town square before it was dismantled in 2020.

Work crews gently rested the 12-foot-tall (3.7-meter-tall) statue into place as the internationally acclaimed sculptor, Basil Watson, looked on carefully.

“It’s exciting to see it going up and exciting for the city because of what he represents and what it’s replacing,” Watson said, as he assisted with the install process.

Lewis was known for his role at the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement and urged others to get in “good trouble” for a cause he saw as vital and necessary. In DeKalb County where the Confederate monument stood for more than a century, protesters have invoked “good trouble” in calling for the swift removal of the obelisk.

Back in 2020, the stone obelisk was lifted from its base with straps amid jeers and chants of “Just drop it!” from onlookers in Decatur, Georgia, who were kept at a safe distance by sheriff’s deputies. The obelisk was erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1908.

Groups like the Beacon Hill Black Alliance for Human Rights and Hate Free Decatur had been pushing for the monument to be removed since the deadly 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The monument was among those around the country that became flashpoints for protests over police brutality and racial injustice, following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis. The city of Decatur then asked a Georgia judge to order the removal of the monument, which was often vandalized and marked by graffiti, saying it had become a threat to public safety.

The statue of Lewis will be officially unveiled on Aug. 24.

How the next president can decide the future of the Supreme Court

[ad_1]

Election 2024 will be about way more than picking a president.

In this week’s episode of theGrio Weekly, we share Part 3 of our interview with Jara Butler, chief impact officer at Supermajority Ed Fund, where we discuss the impact of the presidential election on the Supreme Court.

“Our Supreme Court justices are also seated for life,” Butler tells TheGrio. “There are a lot of folks that were not aware that these are people who are appointed, that there is an entire system that they have to go through and…whoever is elected president will have an opportunity to appoint at least two justices, maybe even three. And that can remake the entire court.”

The 2016 election of Donald Trump ushered in the selection of multiple right-leaning Supreme Court justices, including Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett, and Brett Kavanaugh, who both voted for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which effectively limited abortion rights.

With Trump on the ballot again, if he wins, he’ll more than likely seek another conservative to fill any seat that opens.

“When I’m talking to voters and when we are talking to voters, we let them know that essentially when you’re choosing the president, you’re also choosing SCOTUS. So choose wisely because of the fact that right now the balance of the court is 6 -3,” Butler says.

Butler also spoke about the impact of Project 2025.

“The thing about Project 2025 is that it takes advantage of the three branches of government, the executive branch, Congress, and SCOTUS. And essentially, it’s like a laundry list of, it’s a laundry list of a wish list of things that we want to roll back….From day one, all DEI programs that we could possibly, that are implemented right now with federal employees– that could be wiped away with just a stroke of a pet via executive order,” Butler explains.

GOP Karen Nancy Mace Gets Checked For Butchering Kamala’s Name

[ad_1]

Screenshot: CNN

A CNN panel featuring Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) quickly went to hell after the GOP Karen repeatedly mispronounced Vice President Kamala Harris’s name.

Democratic strategist Keith Boykin and Vanderbilt University professor Michael Eric Dyson checked Mace on her alarming disrespect several times, to which the congresswoman replied, “I just did and I’ll do it again” and “I will say Kamala’s name any way that I want to.”

Mace is clearly taking a page out of Trump’s playbook by mocking Harris’s name. However, Dyson was swift and thorough with how he read Mace for complete filth.

“This congresswoman is a wonderful human being,” Dyson began. “But when you disrespect Kamala Harris by saying you will call her whatever you want, I know you don’t intend it to be that way, that’s the history and legacy of white disregard for the humanity of Black people.”

In typical Karen fashion, Mace immediately played the victim.

“Oh, so now you’re calling me a racist. That is B.S. That is complete B.S.” Mace claimed.

However, Dyson cleared the air as politely as possible: “I just said you weren’t a racist. No,” he retorted. “You don’t have to intend racism to accomplish it. Your disrespect of Kamala Harris is part and parcel of a tradition.”

Things continued to go off the rails when Boykin told Mace to admit that she was in a “cult” with her leader being Trump.

“The fact that you talk to women this way is ridiculous,” Mace told Boykin.

“You just talked about a Black woman that way,” Boykin replied.

“In what way? She doesn’t know what a woman is,” Mace said, before host Abby Phillip wrapped up the program.

Boykin tweeted about the interview Friday morning: “This is what the Republican Party has become,” he wrote.

Yerin Ha to Play Benedict Bridgerton’s Love Interest in ‘Bridgerton’ Season 4 – Where Is The Buzz

[ad_1]

Breaking News! Bridgerton fans, get ready to swoon! We have exclusive news that is sure to send ripples through the ton. It appears the highly anticipated fourth season of Bridgerton has found its leading lady. The role of Sophie Beckett, the love interest of Benedict Bridgerton, will be portrayed by none other than Halo star, Yerin Ha.

This exciting casting news comes hot on the heels of the confirmation that Jonathan Bailey will be returning as Anthony Bridgerton in season four. As fans will recall, it was announced in July that the spotlight would shift to Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) for the upcoming season. Naturally, this sparked fervent speculation about who would be cast as his love interest, Sophie Beckett.

For those unfamiliar with the Julia Quinn novel, An Offer from a Gentleman, Sophie is a complex and captivating character. Born out of wedlock to an earl and one of his maids, she endured a challenging upbringing, primarily under the cruel care of her stepmother. Her story is one of resilience, love, and overcoming adversity, making her a truly compelling figure.

While some fans had speculated that South African actress Masali Baduza might take on the role of Sophie, she has since been cast as Michaela Stirling, the gender-swapped version of Michael Stirling from the books. Michaela will be Francesca Bridgerton’s love interest.

The search for Sophie Beckett has been closely followed by fans. In July 2024, a casting call was released seeking an actress to play a character named “Emily,” believed to be a code name for Sophie. The casting sought an East Asian actress aged between 24 and 30. Yerin Ha, a Korean actress of 29, perfectly fits the description.

With the casting of Yerin Ha, the speculation can finally cease. While Ha might be a relatively new name in the industry, her talent is undeniable. Her previous work in series like Halo, Troppo, Sissy, and Bad Behaviour showcases her versatility as an actress. We are excited to see her take on the challenging and multifaceted role of Sophie Beckett.

As Ha joins the Bridgerton family, anticipation for season four reaches new heights. We can’t wait to see the chemistry between her and Luke Thompson as they bring the beloved characters of Benedict and Sophie to life.

Stay tuned to Where Is The Buzz for more updates and behind-the-scenes news on Bridgerton season four!
