When it comes to chicken wings, the flat is the best part

[ad_1]

Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Read more opinions on theGrio.

You guys, can you believe summer is already almost over and fall is nearly here?

The football preseason has started, baseball season is in full swing and the WNBA is back, and that means people are gathering in bars, pubs, parking lots, private residences and everywhere in between to watch their favorite teams, drink adult beverages and eat foods that are symbolic with sports and merriment.

It’s chicken wings. I’m talking about chicken wings.

Personally, as a Black woman, I will use any excuse to eat chicken wings. It could be a day ending in the letter “y,” and I’ll be like, “Let’s celebrate! Chicken wings!”

Every time I order wings — no matter if it’s at Popeyes (theirs are good!), Wingstop, the Cuban spot (if you live in L.A., Versailles has bomb wings!), or some other random place — I always ask if I can get all flats.

Don’t get me wrong; I’ll eat all the pieces of a chicken wing that are put in front of me, drummettes included, but if we are keeping it a buck, the flat is the superior piece.

First of all, it’s easier to get all the meat off of it and still maintain my dignity in public.

Don’t act like I’m the only one who eats chicken wings one way in public and a totally different way by myself or among close friends and family.

Lifestyle

In public, I’m breaking that flat apart with my fingers and pulling the meat off of it to gracefully put it in my mouth.

In private, I’m sticking that thang in my mouth and sucking the meat off it all at once. You can do this if you know how to use your tongue. It’s the best way to eat the flat, but unless you want everyone staring at you and wondering where your table manners are, you probably aren’t going to do that in mixed company.

Let’s compare that to the drummette. The drummette is still a good piece of wing. I especially like that little gristle part that is attached to the top of the bone after you eat the big meat part of it off.

If you know, you know.

The thing is, if you are eating drummettes in public, you are going to have to leave that little piece of gristle there, and now you got a pile of bones on your plate that other Black people would look at and say you are wasting good chicken when in reality, there is no dignified way to bite that gristle part off in front of people because, again, not in mixed company.

The flat holds a lot of the flavor and seasonings, especially on that little end part that —

You know what? I’m eating that little end part off my flat no matter who is looking because I like nice things.

Back to my point, though, the flat is a more tender piece of meat than the drummette.

Again, I will eat drummettes. I cannot stress this enough. There is not a part of the chicken I won’t eat aside from heads and feet.

The deal is flats are the star of the show. Drummettes are the understudy.

Yeah, they perform well enough in a pinch, but when you show up to the theater, you want the one with top billing.

Anyway, feel free to argue amongst yourselves.

I said what I said.

Flats are the superior piece of the chicken wing. Period.

[ad_1]

“AHAHAHAHA LETS GOOOOO I TOLD YALLL KAMALA WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE 2024 candidate…..STOP FCKIN PLAYIN WITH ME !!!!!!!,” Cardi B wrote on X/Twitter following the news and in response to a resurfaced video from June of her commentary from the earlier debate between Trump and Biden, in which she also talked about VP Kamala Harris taking Biden’s place.

“You know you want to be the fucking president,” Cardi said at one point in the nearly 10-minute long video (in which she also caused a slight stir when she later mentioned how she wasn’t “fucking with none of them” —Democrat or Republican. But thanks to this new announcement, it appears as if she may have had a slight change of heart.

Sydney Sweeney’s Breaks The Internet With New ‘Thirst Traps’ – Where Is The Buzz

[ad_1]

Sydney Sweeney is having a moment. No, scratch that. She’s having a summer. While the rest of us are sweating through our work emails or desperately trying to keep our houseplants alive, this girl is jet-setting around the globe, looking hotter than a three-alarm fire in a swimsuit.

Fresh off the heels of her cinematic endeavors (some hits, some misses – let’s be real), Sweeney has traded Hollywood for horizons. And boy, is she serving up some serious vacation envy. From the looks of her Instagram, her life is one long, glamorous photoshoot.

Her latest post? A water wonderland that would make a mermaid jealous. Crystal-clear waters, lush greenery, and Sweeney herself, looking like a human sunbeam in a swimsuit that’s barely hanging on. She captioned it “i think they call this a thirst trap,” but honestly, it’s more like a thirst tsunami. We’re drowning, Sydney, drowning!

The girl’s got a knack for breaking the internet, and this time, it’s all about that booty. Yes, we said it. The booty. It’s a work of art, people. And Sweeney knows it. She’s played a Hooters girl on SNL, so she’s no stranger to showcasing her assets. But this? This is the next level.

From retro one-pieces that scream vintage vibes to bikinis that make jaws drop, Sweeney’s swimsuit game is on point. It’s like she’s got a personal stylist for every pool party she attends. We’re starting to think she might be a swimsuit designer in a past life.

While we’re all drooling over her vacation pics, let’s not forget that Sweeney is also a talented actress. Euphoria Season 3 is on the horizon, and we can’t wait to see what drama she’ll bring to our screens next. But until then, we’ll be here, patiently waiting for her next thirst trap. Because honestly, what else is there to do?

Tina Knowles and Richard Lawson have settled their divorce more than one year after Knowles filed to separate.

The former stylist, 70, submitted an agreement that covers all outstanding issues, according to legal documents obtained by In Touch on Thursday, Aug. 15. Both Lawson and Knowles agreed that “irreconcilable differences have arisen between the parties which have led to the irremediable breakdown of the marriage, making it impossible for the parties to live together as husband and wife,” the agreement read.

The mother of two was awarded “a 2018 Tesla, a 2020 Bentley, the Matriarch Book ‘deal’ with Penguin Random House, a 1 percent interest in Kirby Beauty Management LLC, furniture and artwork in her possession, and all creative works, ideas, drafts and other materials generated by Tina during the marriage,” according to In Touch.

Lawson, meanwhile, was awarded “a 2021 Cadillac Escalade, several bank and retirement accounts, all money owed to Richard Lawson Studios, any royalties earned, and all creative works he came up with during the union,” per In Touch. He will also get to keep his artwork, jewelry, clothing, royalties and all rights to his SAG-AFTRA pension plan and his studio.

Each party will reportedly cover their own credit card debt. Knowles agreed to pay all outstanding balances on any and all household expenses, while Lawson agreed to pay all debt related to the Cadillac.

The former couple agreed that neither party will receive spousal support, but Knowles will pay Lawson a one-time payment of $300K. The settlement also includes a non-disparagement clause that bans either party from speaking negatively about each other, their children, their children’s spouses or their grandchildren.

“With respect to the mutual desire to protect the privacy rights of any and all present or future grandchildren of either party, the parties agree that they will not, when asked by any media or person, discuss said grandchildren or future grandchildren whether verbally or in writing,” the agreement reads, reports In Touch.

Was Tyler, the Creator Justified in His Criticism of Ian?

[ad_1]

Tyler, the Creator has stirred up some interesting dialogue about Ian, a new popular rapper in the genre, and why his presence bothers him.

During an interview with Maverick Carter, the “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST” artist shared his frustrations with a particular “white kid,” saying, “There’s this kid right now, this white kid, regular Caucasian man, and he’s like mocking Future and Gucci Mane, like rap music. And people are like, ‘This shit hard!’”

He continues, “It’s not even like satire, it’s like, ‘I’m just joking, I’m just mocking it.’ But I’m like, ‘No, no, no, you can’t do [that].’ And I hold rap music so close to my heart ’cause this shit changed my life and everyone’s life around me, and I’m a nerd about this shit.”

“This is like weird and I’m looking at it and something about it don’t even sit well with me, in comparison to someone like a Mac Miller or Eminem who didn’t seem like they were mocking it; they had a genuine love for it.”

Tyler, The Creator Opens Up About Art, Internet Culture, and Music on Mavericks with Mav Carter

To no surprise, the clip has since received a lot of attention on social media, to the point where Ian’s manager responded to it on his Instagram Story, writing, “Yo @feliciathegoat, i signed Ian & im from Atlanta. He sounds nothing like Gucci or future lol. It’s called influence.”

If you’re unaware of how this “white kid” sounds, listen to the track that helped him go viral.

Ian – Figure It Out | From The Block Performance 🎙

While Tyler never specified that he was talking about Ian, he’s the most popular young white rapper out right now trying to emulate a popular sound that is likely not true to who he is.

While his manager was quick to defend him, many people on social media were not.

Hip-hop is so far removed from its anti-status-quo status of yore that it’s gotten to the point where people who started rapping aren’t necessarily doing it for the love or enjoyment of it. They’re simply doing to chase a bag.

While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it leads to music that is “artistically bankrupt.” So while young hip-hop fans can enjoy Ian, nobody can argue that he’s pushing the culture with original sound, lyrics, or style.

Jordan Chiles says panel’s call for her to return Olympic bronze is ‘unjust’ and ‘significant blow’

[ad_1]

American gymnast Jordan Chiles called an arbitration panel’s decision that dropped her out of the bronze medal position in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics “unjust” and a “significant blow” in a message posted on social media Thursday.

The International Olympic Committee, in light of the decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, announced it would reallocate the bronze to Ana Barbosu of Romania. Barbosu is scheduled to receive the medal on Friday at a ceremony in Bucharest.

Chiles initially finished fifth in the eight-woman final before Team USA coach Cecile Landi appealed Chiles’ score, asking to receive credit for a maneuver that would boost her score by .1. The appeal was granted, moving Chiles into third. She was awarded the bronze and participated in the medal ceremony following the competition.

Romania successfully protested to the CAS that Landi’s appeal was not made within one minute of Chiles’ score being posted, and the panel ruled Saturday the bronze should go to Barbosu. The International Gymnastics Federation reinstated the initial order of finish and the IOC announced on Sunday it would reallocate the bronze to Barbosu.

“I have no words,” Chiles wrote in an Instagram post. “This decision feels unjust and comes as a significant blow, not just to me, but to everyone who has championed my journey. To add to the heartbreak, the unprompted racially driven attacks on social media are wrong and extremely hurtful. I’ve poured my heart and soul into this sport and I am so proud to represent my culture and my country.”

USA Gymnastics has said it will continue efforts to let Chiles keep the medal. The sport’s governing body in the United States disputes Romania’s claim that Landi’s appeal came 4 seconds too late, saying Sunday it submitted video evidence to CAS that showed Landi first appealed 13 seconds before the deadline.

CAS released a detailed account of how it reached its decision on Wednesday, noting that USA Gymnastics did not voice any concern about the timekeeping system during the hearing — which USA Gymnastics was given less than 24 hours to prepare for due to clerical errors by CAS that sent notifications to the wrong email address — and that Landi noted her request for an inquiry was granted “immediately.”

The 23-year-old Chiles — who will return to competition in January when she starts her junior year at UCLA — has also been the subject of social media attacks, some of them racially charged, that she’s called “wrong and extremely hurtful.”

“I am now confronted with one of the most challenging moments of my career,” Chiles posted. “Believe me when I say I have had many. I will approach the challenge as I have others — and will make every effort to ensure that justice is done. I believe that at the end of this journey, the people in control will do the right thing.”

Barry Jenkins Reveals Details About Blue Ivy’s ‘Mufasa’ Role

[ad_1]

The upcoming film “Mufasa: The Lion King” is a highly anticipated prequel that tells the story of how Mufasa and Taka, who becomes known as Scar in the future, met and became brothers. The film is framed around Rafiki, Timon and Pumbaa telling this new story to Simba and Nala’s daughter Kiara. Since Nala is voiced by Beyoncé, it makes sense that they would cast her actual daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, in the role. At the recent D23 Expo fan event, director Barry Jenkins revealed a few details about Blue Ivy’s performance.

“Blue Ivy doesn’t sing in the movie. She is a thespian! I gotta be honest about that. She is a thespian,” Jenkins told Entertainment Weekly.

Mufasa: The Lion King | Official Trailer

While the young actress doesn’t sing, everyone else does. For this new entry into the universe, Disney turned to frequent collaborator Lin-Manuel Miranda to do the music. As acclaimed as Jenkins is, this is his first musical, so working with Tony and Grammy winner Miranda was a confidence booster.

“For me, working with Lin was amazing,” Jenkins said. “I’ve never made a musical before. So when I took the job, I knew that was going to be a part of it, but I just figured, ‘We’ll figure that out when we figure that out.’ In a musical, we need to figure that out first!”

At D23 Expo, we got a sneak peek of the song, “I Always Wanted a Brother,” which features the two lions. Taka seems very devoted to Mufasa and really wants him to join the family, so it will be interesting to see how their relationship changes into what we’ve seen for years.

In addition to her very famous mother, Blue Ivy joins a cast that includes returning stars Donald Glover as Simba; John Kani as Rafiki; Billy Eichner as Timon; Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, as well as Aaron Pierre as Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka.

Disney has used its live-action remakes to create more relatable stories for its villains. It appears that may be where “Mufasa” is headed, but anyone who watched the wildebeest stampede when they were kids will never forgive Scar. Plus, the character is one of Disney’s most fascinating villains, so let’s hope the new movie doesn’t change their dynamic too much.

“Mufasa: The Lion King” storms into theaters Dec. 20.

Becky Hammon Under Fire After Leaked Messages with Dearica Hamby – Where Is The Buzz

[ad_1]

Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon is under intense scrutiny following the public release of a private conversation with former player Dearica Hamby. The contents of the January 2023 phone call have ignited a firestorm of criticism, with many calling for Hammon’s dismissal.

Central to the controversy are Hammon’s comments regarding Hamby’s pregnancy. During the conversation, Hammon questioned Hamby’s family planning, expressed concerns about her commitment to the team, and made accusations about her professional conduct. Hamby has vehemently denied these allegations.

Specific points of contention include Hammon’s inquiries about whether Hamby had planned her pregnancy, her assessment of Hamby’s dedication to the team, and a claim that Hamby had knowingly signed her contract extension while pregnant. Hammon also expressed skepticism about Hamby’s ability to return to play at the start of the following season due to her pregnancy and questioned her offseason workout regimen.

These comments have sparked widespread outrage and ignited a broader conversation about the treatment of pregnant athletes. Hamby’s subsequent trade to the Los Angeles Sparks, where she has excelled, has further fueled criticism of Hammon’s decision-making.

The Las Vegas Aces organization has yet to issue a formal statement addressing the allegations. As the situation unfolds, the WNBA faces increasing pressure to address the matter and implement measures to protect the rights and well-being of its players.
