It’s a good day for thousands of Black and minority farmers across the country because more than $2 billion in direct payments were paid to more than 23,000 farmers by the Biden-Harris Administration.

Why exactly? After decades of discrimination against Black farmers by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Biden-Harris is attempting to right those wrongs through the Inflation Reduction Act’s Discrimination Financial Assistance Program (DFAP). This act is meant to provide financial assistance to those minority farmers who were denied access to USDA lending and safety net programs, according to the USDA.

In a press release, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack said, “While this financial assistance is not compensation for anyone’s losses or pain endured, it is an acknowledgement. My hope is that this will ensure that many farmers can stay on their farms, contribute to our nation’s food supply, and continue doing what they love.”

While this is a good step forward for many Black farmers, they also understand that this will not totally solve some of the problems they still deal with to this day. National Black Farmers Association Founder and President John Boyd Jr. told the Associated Press, “It’s like putting a bandage on somebody that needs open-heart surgery. We want our land, and I want to be very, very clear about that.”

Boyd is still fighting a federal lawsuit for 120% debt relief for Black farmers that was approved by Congress in 2021. Five billion dollars for the program was included in the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus package.

But the money never came. White farmers in several states filed lawsuits arguing their exclusion was a violation of their constitutional rights, which prompted judges to halt the program shortly after its passage.

Faced with the likelihood of a lengthy court battle that would delay payments to farmers, Congress amended the law and offered financial help to a broader group of farmers. A new law allocated $3.1 billion to help farmers struggling with USDA-backed loans and $2.2 billion to pay farmers who the agency discriminated against.

The payments farmers received ranged from $10,000 to $500,000, according to the USDA.

A local woman is facing charges after a physical altercation with a nurse at a nearby hospital. Kayla Bizell is accused of assaulting 22-year-old Ananda Nelson following allegations that Nelson shared Bizell’s private medical information on social media.

According to reports, Bizell discovered that Nelson had allegedly posted her medical records to her private Instagram story. The two women were previously acquainted. Overwhelmed by the alleged privacy breach, Bizell confronted Nelson, and the situation escalated into a physical altercation. The incident was captured on video and has since circulated widely online.

Hospital authorities intervened and arrested Bizell on charges of battery. Nelson has been terminated from her position.

Local law enforcement is investigating the matter, and the hospital is conducting an internal review of its privacy protocols.

SAINT-DENIS, France (AP) — Noah Lyles walks around the Olympic Village in disguise, wearing sunglasses, a hat and even a mask to cut down on some of the attention he receives.

On the track, he can’t avoid it. Or everyone’s best shot.

It’s a lesson he learned when finishing second in his opening heat of the 100 meters Saturday at the Paris Games. The American got off to a sluggish start and finished in 10.04 seconds, which was .06 behind Louie Hinchliffe, a British sprinter being trained by Carl Lewis.

Going against Lyles is always a big deal.

“These boys said they were coming to play,” he said. “That’s my first lesson in underestimating the power of the Olympics. When somebody’s on the line, they’re going to give it their all or nothing.

“But now I don’t have to hold back. I’m ready to go.”

Lyles was clowning around before settling into the starting blocks. He preened for the camera, flashed his Team USA-themed nail polish — the color blue with stars — and threw some imaginary jabs like a prizefighter. He fed off the noise from the packed stadium. Once the race started, he needed to tap into an extra gear to climb back into second.

“To be honest, I was kind of playing my cards close to the chest,” Lyles explained.

The second-place finish means Lyles, the reigning world champion at 100 and 200 meters, won’t have the premier lane choice when he races in the semifinals Sunday. If he advances from that, he’ll race for the gold medal later in the evening.

“I downplayed my competitors for sure,” Lyles said. “I was like, ‘There’s no reason to really put any emphasis on it.’ But these guys proved to me that they’re ready to compete. I said, ‘All right, I can’t do that anymore.’ I promise that will not happen again.”

Also advancing in the early heats were Kishane Thompson of Jamaica, who slowed over last 20 meters and still won his heat in 10 seconds flat. Thompson’s heat was delayed several minutes after British sprinter Jeremiah Azu was called for a false start. Azu looked at the replay and pleaded his case with the officials before leaving the track.

Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya won his heat in 10.08 and Oblique Seville of Jamaica won his in 9.99. Reigning Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs, who said he was bitten by an insect while in the starting blocks, finished second in his heat to advance.

“I made a few mistakes at the start,” Jacobs said, “which didn’t allow me to get the pace that I wanted.”

Lyles’ U.S. teammates, Fred Kerley and Kenny Bednarek, won their heats in strong fashion, too, both going 9.97.

“This year, I’m changing the narrative. I’ve been the underdog for a couple of years,” said Bednarek, a silver medalist in the 200 meters at the Tokyo Olympics. “I’m not trying to be the underdog, I’m trying to be the top dog. Once I finally hit that milestone, I’m not coming back. I’m going to run away with it.”

For Lyles, this was just business. After his race, he even approached Hinchliffe with words of encouragement.

“Just, ‘Well done,’” Hinchliffe said of their conversation. “Just acknowledging me.”

Lyles said the pressure of the world championships last summer was more than he’s felt so far at these Olympics.

“I felt like I had to fight to prove that I was the fastest,” said Lyles, one of the stars of a Netflix documentary on sprinters. “This time, a lot of people know it and I already have the target on my back.”

He’s not sure what kind of time it’s going to take to claim Olympic gold but he is confident of this: “I’m going to run it,” Lyles said.

Second chance

Abbey Caldwell of Australia was one of the women’s 800-meter runners who took advantage of the safety net that is the repechage round to move on to the semifinals. This is the first Olympics where track has used the repechage rule, which gives a second chance to hurdlers and to sprinters and middle-distance runners who don’t move on from their opening heats in the 200 through 1,500 meters.

It was an easy day of qualifying for defending Olympic pole vault champion Mondo Duplantis. The Swedish world-record holder took just two jumps and cleared both heights.

Wilson recalled after the U.S. beat Belgium on Thursday night at the Olympics that one of the officials during the game told her to tone it down.

“I need to, get my emotions in check (he said), and I think that just heightened my emotions even more because I’m like, ‘How are you going to tell me at my job that I can’t show emotion, passion?’” she said. “So I keep my cool. I continue being me. I keep my cool by understanding who I am and who I have around me, and don’t look back and just keep going.”

Wilson said she didn’t plan on changing the way she plays when the U.S. faces Germany on Sunday with first place in their group on the line. Both teams are 2-0 and have already advanced to the quarterfinals in Paris.

“I’m not going to let a defender think that they stopped me. I don’t think I’m ever going to let them off the hook,” she said. “And that’s what I got to keep doing. So to that ref, I’m going to keep yelling. I’m gonna keep screaming. I’m gonna keep fussing, cussing anywhere in-between cheering. Because that’s the game that I play.”

Wilson said the official made the comment after he had gone back and looked at a play.

“I’m not telling him don’t blow your whistle, like I’m not telling you how to do your job, don’t tell me how to do mine,” the two-time WNBA MVP said.

Wilson, who is averaging 23.5 points and 13 rebounds for the U.S., wasn’t the only one showing emotion in the win over Belgium. It was a fun game to play in with over 25,000 fans in attendance, mostly cheering on Belgium with the arena was about 6 miles from the country’s border.

The normally even-keeled Breanna Stewart was excited after a big block and Sabrina Ionescu shushed the crowd, putting her finger to her mouth, after a late 3-pointer.

The Americans enjoyed themselves en route to their 57th consecutive Olympic victory.

“Obviously knowing we’re a little bit outnumbered in our crowd, but wanting to kind of fire the team up and you know, what’s at stake and how important this is,” Stewart said. “We won one game, but that doesn’t mean anything. So just, just kind of playing with a lot of passion and, having fun.”
