John Legend and Chrissy Teigen share that son Miles has Type 1 diabetes

[ad_1]

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s family have joined thousands of American families in navigating a lifelong prognosis: Their son Miles has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

After sharing a photo of Teigen, Miles, and her daughter Luna at the Olympics cheering on Simone Biles where Miles’ monitor was visible, the mother confirmed the news in a lengthy statement on Instagram.

“A lot of you noticed something a little special about a photo I posted a few days ago – Luna, Miles, and I were celebrating Simone and Team USA. Miles had his arm up and sooo many of you reached out to say the most beautiful and incredible words I have ever witnessed on this platform,” Teigen wrote in the statement.

She continued, “You noticed his Type-1 diabetes monitor and extended so much love and encouragement in every way possible. I was, and am, so blown away by the kindness of this community, already.”

The “Cravings” cookbook author further explained that, like so many other families, they discovered Miles had Type 1 diabetes after he contracted an unrelated illness, and they sought care.

“A couple [of] weeks ago, our Miles was sick, in the hospital, with a terrible case of shigella, an intestinal infection caused by bacteria in food or water. A lot of his friends were also sick with it, as they went to the same camp and well, it happens!” she continued.

“But the doctors knew something else was off about his blood tests. I’ve learned since then that this is how so many young children end up being diagnosed with Type-1 — going to the hospital for something completely different.”

Teigen said after more testing they learned Miles was in the “‘honeymoon period’ of a lifetime of T1.”

“Last night we gave him his first shot of insulin and here we go! A different, new world for us and we are certainly learning so much on the fly,” she added.

Teigen and Legend share daughters Luna, 8, and Esti, 18 months, and sons Miles, 6, and Wren, 13 months.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Miles is one of roughly 304,000 children with Type 1 diabetes in the U.S. Despite white American children maintaining the highest rate of diagnosis, behind non-Hispanic Asian and Pacific Islander children, Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black children and adolescents had “significant” increases in cases over the last 15 years. Since 2009, the rate of diagnosis among Black children has been steadily increasing.

“This post is to thank you so much for your kindness. It helps Miles so much to know so many other people are going through the same thing, and he is not alone,” Teigen continued in her statement.

She closed the statement by sharing that she and Legend have been reading the children’s book “Year One With Type One” to Miles to help him and their family navigate their new normal. She added that the book and the outpouring of support from the public have helped Miles know that he’s in good company.

“You’re not alone either! And we promise to be there for you guys like you have been there for us,” she wrote in her conclusion.

Cardi B files from divorce from Offset once again

[ad_1]

Cardi B and Offset are once again heading towards divorce. According to her rep’s confirmation to Page Six, the “Bongos” rapper filed for divorce from Offset on Wednesday. The rapper is reportedly seeking primary custody of their children as well, and is “not folding” this time.

Inside The Unfortunate Death of Rapper Takeoff

Cardi and Offset share two children together, their daughter Kulture (5) and son Wave (2). The outlet confirms that Cardi’s main focus at the moment is “obtaining primary custody” of their children. According to sources close to the outlet, the divorce is “not a surprise” to Offset, as the two have been, “trying to figure out what their future looks like for a while now.”

“It’s not something that happened overnight,” the source told Page Six. “They’ve both been on the same page. There wasn’t [pushback]. They’ve grown apart and that feeling has gotten stronger over time. It’s become unavoidable.”

As The Root previously reported, this is not the first time Cardi has filed for divorce from the rapper. In 2020, Cardi first filed, reportedly happening after rumors of infidelity on Offset’s side. At the time, People reported that the relationship between the two was “irretrievably broken” and that there were “no prospects for a reconciliation.”

The two eventually did reconcile months after she first filed, as The Root reported. In November 202o, the divorce was dismissed “without prejudice.” Since then, the two have remained together but not without rumors and hiccups, with Cardi often taking to social media with cryptic messages surrounding outgrowing relationships and putting herself “first.”

Earlier this year, however, it did seem as if the two were still working on their marriage, as they were spotted on a date night just this April. But now, Cardi is reportedly focused on, “moving on.”

“She has no ill will towards him,” the source tells Page Six. “She’s wishing him the best. She’s not going into this next season [of her life] with any beef or any drama. She wants everything to be very peaceful.”

Watch: Unpacking Trump’s NABJ panel and his history of disrespecting Black journalists

[ad_1]

The fallout continues over the National Association of Black Journalists’ decision to invite former President Donald Trump to speak at its annual convention in Chicago. TheGrio’s April Ryan sat down with creative consultant April Reign to discuss the backlash and how the organization failed Black media. Reign said, “The writing was on the wall,” before the former president’s appearance on Wednesday.

For Ryan, a 2017 NABJ Journalist of the Year recipient, the organization’s invitation to the Republican presidential candidate was personal. Though NABJ in 2018 said it was appalled by Trump’s treatment of Ryan and other Black reporters like Abby Phillip and Yamiche Alcindor, the Black press advocacy group decided to invite someone who for years used harmful and derogatory remarks about Black women journalists.

The 45th president of the United States dressed down Rachel Scott, who is Black, of ABC News. He claimed the framing of her question, in which she challenged him for his racist statements, was rude and “nasty.” Scott quoted Trump’s past remarks about Black reporters covering the White House, as well as harsh comments toward Black prosecutors who held the twice-impeached and convicted former president accountable in a court of law.

Following Trump’s explosive NABJ panel, the organization’s founders met to establish a strategic governance plan and address the Trump controversy, among other issues that led to unwanted international headlines for the historic organization.

“What I saw was a lack of accountability from an organization that said they wanted to hold someone accountable,” said Reign of the more than hour late session. Trump complained profusely about the convention’s “lousy” equipment, which he blamed for the panel not starting on time. NABJ has yet to address the matter officially.

The panel audience audibly gasped many times during the shock and awe moments, including Trump’s false accusation that his presidential opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, at some point decided to “turn Black.”

As ABC’s Scott pointed out to Trump on Wednesday, Harris, who is also South Asian, always identified as a Black woman. The vice president’s mother is Southeast Asian, and her father is Jamaican.

Jonathan Majors ‘Heartbroken’ Over MCU’s Kang-less Future

[ad_1]

Photo: Arnold Turner (Getty Images)

The official announcement that “Avengers 5” will now be titled “Doomsday” and that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the franchise to play the villainous Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom has put the final nail in the coffin of Kang the Conqueror. Following the lackluster reception to “Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” there were questions about whether Kang and his variants were interesting enough to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next big bad.

Ant-Man & The Wasp’s Jonathan Majors Plays “Would You Rather”, Improvises A Valentines Poem

When Jonathan Majors was arrested in March 2023, it threw everything into chaos, with fans wondering if he would even return as the character. In “Loki” Season 2, it seemed like the powers that be made an effort to finish his story and move on from the time-bending villain. If that wasn’t enough evidence, the actor was reportedly fired after he was found guilty of reckless assault and harassment in a highly publicized assault trial.

The big news about Downey Jr.’s return came on Saturday at Marvel Studios’ panel at San Diego Comic-Con. His casting also signals that producers and directors are still committed to the Multiverse Saga, just not the plans they had with Kang.

TMZ caught up with Majors and he said he was “heartbroken” about the news, confirming his love for Kang, as well as his variants Victor Timely and He Who Remains. He also offered thoughts on Downey Jr. and “The Flash” star Ezra Miller getting second chances with their careers following very public legal troubles. The “Iron Man” star’s addiction issues led to multiple arrests, causing the actor to basically start over from the bottom. Now he’s one of the biggest names in the business and just won an Oscar.

“I think it’s fair that Mr. Downey has been greeted with patience and curiosity and love. Mr. Miller’s gotten the same treatment and they’re being allowed to work at they’re art and be creative at that level,” he said. “I didn’t really get that.”

History tells us that Black actors don’t typically receive the same grace and understanding that white actors do. While Will Smith’s popularity and longevity puts him on a different level than other actors, the road to redemption isn’t as easy for Black stars.

The fact that Majors’ downfall came just as he was reaching the next step in his career makes his situation even more difficult. By Hollywood standards, he’s still pretty early in his controversy cycle. He may have to wait a while for a friend to take a chance on him, then he has to deliver a performance so brilliant, other directors line up to work with him. That’s usually how these stories play out. It’s essentially just a waiting game.

Teen brother of Air Force airman who was killed by Florida deputy is shot to death near Atlanta

[ad_1]

ATLANTA (AP) — The teenage brother of a U.S. Air Force airman who was shot and killed in his home by a Florida sheriff’s deputy in May has been killed in a shooting in the Atlanta area, police said.

Andre Fortson, Senior Airman Roger Fortson’s 16-year-old brother, was killed this week in DeKalb County, near Atlanta’s east side, DeKalb County police said in an update on the slaying.

“The Fortson family is battling the loss of yet another young member of their family,” said civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who has been representing the family since Roger Fortson was killed.

“This has been an incredibly challenging time for them with the loss of Roger,” Crump said in a statement. “Losing the life of yet another young family member — a mere child — has been an absolute devastation.”

Andre Fortson was found shot to death in the breezeway of an apartment complex on Tuesday, police said. Two groups of people had been shooting at each other for unknown reasons, DeKalb County police said.

A 20-year-old man was identified as one of the shooters, and arrested on an aggravated assault charge, police said. He was booked into the DeKalb County Jail. Jail records did not list an attorney who could be reached for comment on his behalf.

The killing comes about three months after Roger Fortson, 23, was killed May 3 by Okaloosa County sheriff’s Deputy Eddie Duran at Fortson’s apartment in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The airman had answered the door while holding a handgun pointed toward the floor and was killed within seconds, body camera video shows.

Okaloosa County Sheriff Eric Aden fired Duran, saying the deputy’s life was never in danger and that he should not have fired his weapon.

A sheriff’s office internal affairs investigation found that Fortson “did not make any hostile, attacking movements, and therefore, the former deputy’s use of deadly force was not objectively reasonable.”

The Fortson family is from DeKalb County, where Andre Fortson was killed. At a tearful news conference a couple of weeks after the Florida killing, Andre Fortson stood on the stage with his mother and sisters. They wore red shirts with the words “WE ALL WE GOT” on the front and a picture of Roger Fortson in his military uniform on the back.

Roger Fortson was stationed at the Air Force’s Hurlburt Field in the Florida Panhandle. At his funeral outside Atlanta, hundreds of Air Force members in dress blues filed past his coffin, draped with an American flag.
