Then in 1993, producers offered the spot to the biggest star in the world: Michael Jackson. He said yes, literally stole the show and changed the game forever. — Stephanie Holland

Netflix chairman’s donation to Kamala Harris campaign sparks #CancelNetflix boycott

[ad_1]

Netflix executive chairman Reed Hastings donated $7 million to Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, leading to calls for a Netflix boycott.

The hashtag #CancelNetflix is trending on social media after it was revealed that Hastings donated “the largest single campaign contribution the streaming mogul has ever made,” according to Variety. Hastings cited President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump’s “depressing” debate as part of the reason behind his donation, saying in an interview with The Information that “we are in the game again” with Harris’ new campaign.

Right-wing pundits and critics of the Harris campaign were quick to call out for widespread Netflix boycott on X (Twitter) after the news was revealed on Thursday.

“Just cancelled @netflix due to @reedhastings $7 million political donation to Kamala Harris. #boycott #netflix #BoycottNetflix,” user @TX_Vet_MAGA said.

Trump supporter Vicki McCann commented on a tweet about the donation, writing, “Boycott Netflix. I’m canceling my subscription @netflix.”

Former Trump lawyer Jenna Ellis also commented on social media, saying “This is only the beginning,” with a link to the news of the boycott.

Supporters of Harris’ presidential campaign were quick to point out the hypocrisy as Trump donated to Harris’ reelection campaign when she was Attorney General of California. According to records obtained by CBS News, “Trump made a $5,000 donation in 2011, months after she was first sworn in, and another $1,000 donation in 2013, one year before she was reelected for a second term.”

“If you want to cancel Netflix because they donated to Kamala Harris, perhaps you should cancel Donald Trump too for donating to her? 🤔 #WeChooseKamala #KamalaHarris2024 #MakeAmericaLaughAgain,” user Piyush Mittal wrote on X

The social media calls for a boycott come just one day after Harris made her presence known on another social media platform: TikTok. The vice president joined the Chinese-owned short-form video platform on Thursday after becoming a “coconut queen” meme sensation on social media. She already has over 1.8 million TikTok followers and counting.

“Well I’ve heard that recently, I’ve been on the For You page, so I thought I’d get on here myself,” Harris said in her first post on the social media platform.

Harris’ Deputy Campaign Manager Rob Flaherty told People that “our job as a campaign is to break through the noise and make sure we’re talking to voters wherever they are—TikTok is one of those landscapes, and we’re leaving no stone unturned.”

His statement has proven to be true as Harris not only created a TikTok this week, but she also appeared on “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” to urge Americans to vote. The vice president appeared in a pre-taped segment on the series finale of the reality show, which is now available to stream on Paramount+, according to the Associated Press

“Hi, everyone. It’s Kamala Harris. Each day, we’re seeing our rights and freedoms under attack, including the right of everyone to be who they are, love who they love — openly and with pride,” she said in the segment. “So, as we fight back against these attacks, no one is alone. We are all in this together, and your vote is your power, so please make sure your voice is heard this November and register to vote.”

In news that can only be described as “cool story, bro, nobody cares”—Tory Lanez is back in the headlines.

Will The Real Black Journalists Please Stand Up

But before you get in a tizzy, yes he’s still in prison. But that doesn’t seem to be stopping him from making good on his promise to not leave his fans lacking in new music from him. In fact, in an Instagram post on his personal page on Wednesday, Lanez teased just that: an all new playlist featuring new music would be coming on Friday. And not only will it be new music, it’ll be a “Free Tory playlist” slated to be updated every week.

“After about 20-something to 30-something fuck-ups and mistakes, me and my engineer have finally figure out how to record music over the jail phone and still keep the quality as professional as I had it on the street,” Lanez can be heard speaking in audio over a graphic of a jail phone in the post. “It’s over. I done cracked the f**king code, man. This means that not even these prison walls can stop me from dropping new music. It’s crazy!”

“I’m dropping the all-new Free Tory playlist, it’s gon’ be updated every week, with new music that I’m recording in prison in real-time. This is the first of its kind and although God has already shown me that this moment is only temporary, it speaks testimony to the fact that no matter where they put me, they can’t lock down my spirit, my ambition, my soul my passion nor my destiny!” he concluded.

The first single of this playlist, the nearly four-minute-long “Wish I Never Met You (Prison Tapes)“ is available to stream now. Though Lanez doesn’t name any names, he makes reference to watching anime in the bed with a person and regretting the fact that this person came and kissed him, thereby starting their connection.

Jonathan Owens negotiated his new NFL contract to cheer on Simone Biles at the Paris Olympics

[ad_1]

Jonathan Owens didn’t play when it came to carving out the time to support his wife, Simone Biles, in Paris during the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The professional football player signed with the Chicago Bears in March as a free agent, and, according to Yahoo! Sports, the discussion around him taking time from training camp to support Biles was negotiated at the onset.

“Obviously, the Olympics were coming up, and you know who my wife is,” Owens, 29, said Thursday after the Bears’ training camp practice. “It was all respectful. We went to them and asked, ‘We’d really appreciate if he could go to support his wife.’”

On Monday, he’ll leave Chicago after Bears practice to fly to Paris for the Olympics.

“I can’t wait to be able to support her,” he said.

Biles is gearing up to make a triumphant comeback after the difficult decision to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics due to developing “the twisties,” a dangerous neurological condition that causes the mind and body to stop cooperating.

During the first two episodes of her Netflix docuseries, “Simone Biles Rising,” several athletes and officials connected to the Olympics explained how challenging the Tokyo Olympics were for competing athletes due to COVID-19 restrictions. Without the audience to provide energy and friends and family to provide much-needed support, it was an isolating experience for many. That sense of isolation, plus the pressure applied by the media and public, contributed to Biles experiencing the twisties.

In the years since, the record-breaking gymnast regained her focus gradually through practicing with her teammates, adopting a self-care regimen, and working with a therapist. She and Owens were married in May 2023, first during a courthouse ceremony in Houston, and again during a destination wedding in Mexico, surrounded by friends and family.

The Olympic women’s gymnastic team finals are scheduled for Tuesday, and the women’s all-around final is scheduled for Aug. 1. While he can’t reside with his wife in the Olympic Village, Owens plans to be in Paris for each event.

“It’s the person you love most, man, and you see them out there in a position where someone could get hurt, and you care,” Owens said during the briefing. “I’m just holding my breath, and I have my little piece of paper right there ready calculating everything, so I can’t wait.”

The dating pool is Lake Lanier, but it doesn’t have to be

[ad_1]

Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Read more opinions on theGrio.

I recently saw someone on Threads say “The dating pool is giving Lake Lanier,” and I had to laugh because it’s such a perfect encapsulation of what is happening out there in these dating streets.

I usually say the dating pool has pee and poop in it, but saying it’s giving Lake Lanier is a much funnier way to describe it. Apparently, it’s been said quite a bit across social media platforms, and I’m too lazy to dig all the way through to find out who said it first.

It doesn’t matter. Whether the dating pool is full of pee and poop or a place where dreams of love, romance, and healthy relationships go to drown, it’s all the same at the end of the day.

The dating pool in its current state is a toxic environment, if we are to believe the things that are being discussed and the way they are being discussed on social media. That toxicity is only made worse by the dopamine hits people get from going viral for saying something boneheaded on the internet about dating or anything even tangentially related to dating.

Think about the viral video of the woman who refused to go to Cheesecake Factory on a date

While I personally think that video was a staged skit (as a lot of things on social media seem to be, sadly), it caused a lot of discussion about what is or isn’t a good first date.

First of all, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: There is absolutely nothing wrong with Cheesecake Factory. I don’t care how rich I get or how much I have in life, there are a few things I will never be too good for; chief among them are ramen noodles out of the pack and the bistro shrimp pasta platter from Cheesecake Factory. Judge me all you want, baby, because that dish goes hard in the paint, and I’mma eat it up along with a big-ass slice of cheesecake and generous helpings of their new and improved sourdough bread each and every time a Cheesecake Factory is in my immediate vicinity.

I went off on a tangent, but I do have a point.

My point is that conversations like these are low-vibrational like them plates that Coach Stormy lady served up to those women who paid all those thousands of dollars to be in her presence before clowning them for eating the food she paid to cater.

There’s a pattern here.

Why are the loudest voices on dating coming from the people with the least amount of skin in the game?

The toxicity is evenly distributed amongst all parties involved, and it’s reached a point where everyone needs to take a step back and engage in some soul-searching, some healing of past traumas, and some unlearning of horrible social constructs and patriarchal ideologies.

Recommended Stories

Speaking specifically from my own cis-hetero dating perspective, what I see happening around me is more than a little disturbing.

There are all kinds of toxic spirits hanging around the shallow end of the dating pool, and they come from both sides. There are gold diggers; people who just want to be chosen; people carrying baggage from past relationships; people who haven’t matured emotionally or otherwise; people who are just all-around toxic in nature; time wasters; perpetrators; people with no idea what they want —

That list could go on forever, and all of those people have crowded the pool, making it impossible to swim around without bumping into one or more of them before you find a safe spot to float peacefully.

It’s as if the spirits at the bottom of the lake are trying to tell us all not to go over there.

The dating pool is Lake Lanier.

When it comes to the real Lake Lanier, every time something tragic happens there, there is a chorus of voices saying, “Why do people still keep going there? Don’t they know it’s cursed?”

Do we need to start having those same conversations about the dating pool?

Y’all know it ain’t safe, right?

I don’t want to be all doom and gloom. We’ve all seen beautiful stories of people finding their person and getting that “happy ever after” we’ve been sold since we were old enough to comprehend what that meant on any level.

Now that we are older, we’ve lived enough to know that happily ever after doesn’t always come on the wings of a fairy godmother. A lot of times, we have to kiss way too many frogs before we find our “person.”

So the smart thing is to be ever mindful of our surroundings, be intentional in our approach and make sure that approach is made with eyes so wide open that we are able to take in everything around us and assess it accordingly.

Keep your life vest on. Practice swimming before you jump out there by yourself. Make sure you are prepared to tread water for long periods of time; it may become absolutely necessary.

Above all, heal you. You won’t be able to recognize the signs of bad water if you are not trained to see it within yourself first.

There is a lot of toxicity on both sides.

Let’s clean up all the pollution and make the pool safer for everyone out there.
