Trump denies knowing about Project 2025 written by allies

[ad_1]

MIAMI (AP) — Donald Trump distanced himself Friday from Project 2025, a massive proposed overhaul of the federal government drafted by longtime allies and former officials in his administration, days after the head of the think tank responsible for the program suggested there would be a second American Revolution.

“I know nothing about Project 2025,” Trump posted on his social media website. “I have no idea who is behind it. I disagree with some of the things they’re saying and some of the things they’re saying are absolutely ridiculous and abysmal. Anything they do, I wish them luck, but I have nothing to do with them.”

The 922-page plan outlines a dramatic expansion of presidential power and a plan to fire as many as 50,000 government workers to replace them with Trump loyalists. President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign has worked to draw more attention to the agenda, particularly as Biden tries to keep fellow Democrats on board after his disastrous debate.

Trump has outlined his own plans to remake the government if he wins a second term, including staging the largest deportation operation in U.S. history — including people from Haiti and Africa — and imposing tariffs on potentially all imports. His campaign has previously warned outside allies not to presume to speak for the former president and suggested their transition-in-waiting efforts were unhelpful.

As reported by theGrio, below are some of what Project 2025 proposals could do:

  • Eliminate racial equity programs due to “anti-white” discrimination
  • Potentially eliminate thousands of Black federal employees
  • Eliminate the Department of Education and student loan programs
  • Politicize the Department of Justice, send troops to Black cities
  • Start mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, including those from Africa and Haiti

Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts said on Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast Tuesday that Republicans are “in the process of taking this country back.” Former U.S. Rep. Dave Brat of Virginia hosted the show for Bannon, who is serving a four-month prison term.

“We are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be,” Roberts said.

Those comments were widely circulated online and blasted by the Biden campaign, which issued a statement saying Trump and his allies were “dreaming of a violent revolution to destroy the very idea of America.”

Some of the people involved in Project 2025 are former senior administration officials. The project’s director is Paul Dans, who served as chief of staff at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management under Trump. Trump’s campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt was featured in one of Project 2025’s videos.

John McEntee, a former director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office in the Trump administration, is a senior adviser. McEntee told the conservative news site The Daily Wire earlier this year that Project 2025’s team would integrate a lot of its work with the campaign after the summer when Trump would announce his transition team.

Trump’s comments on Project 2025 come ahead of the Republican Party’s meetings next week to begin to draft its party platform.

Project 2025 has been preparing its own 180-day agenda for the next administration that it plans to share privately, rather than as part of its public-facing book of priorities for a Republican president. A key Trump ally, Russ Vought, who contributed to Project 2025 and is drafting this final pillar, is also on the Republican National Committee’s platform writing committee.

A spokesperson for the plan said Project 2025 is not tied to a specific candidate or campaign.

“We are a coalition of more than 110 conservative groups advocating policy and personnel recommendations for the next conservative president,” a statement said. “But it is ultimately up to that president, who we believe will be President Trump, to decide which recommendations to implement.”

The Democratic National Committee said the plan and the Trump campaign are part of the same “MAGA operation.” A Biden campaign spokesperson said that Project 2025 staff members are also leading the Republican policy platform.

“Project 2025 is the extreme policy and personnel playbook for Trump’s second term that should scare the hell out of the American people,” said Ammar Moussa.

On Thursday, as the country celebrated Independence Day and Biden prepared for his television interview after his halting debate performance, the president’s campaign posted on X a shot from the dystopian TV drama “The Handmaid’s Tale” showing a group of women in the show’s red dresses and white hats standing in formation by a reflecting pool with a cross at the far end where the Washington Monument should be. The story revolves around women who are stripped of their identities and forced to give birth to children for other couples in a totalitarian regime.

“Fourth of July under Trump’s Project 2025,” the post said.

Chicago’s Angel Reese Ties WNBA Record, Leads Sky to Victory Over Seattle – Where Is The Buzz

[ad_1]

In a tightly contested game, the Chicago Sky emerged victorious over the Seattle Storm by a score of 88-84. The win was fueled by a dominant performance from rookie phenom Angel Reese, who not only secured a game-high 27 points but also etched her name into WNBA history.

Reese displayed remarkable efficiency throughout the contest, shooting 61.5% from the field (8-for-13) including a flawless 2-for-2 showing from three-point range. She capped off her impressive night with a near-perfect performance at the free-throw line, converting 9 of her 10 attempts.

Moreover, Reese secured a double-double with 10 rebounds, extending her streak to a remarkable 12 consecutive games. This achievement ties the WNBA record for most consecutive double-doubles across multiple seasons, previously held by the legendary Candace Parker.

Angel Reese joins A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, and Napheesa Collier as the only WNBA players to have notched multiple 25-point, 10-rebound double-doubles this season.

While Reese spearheaded the Sky’s offense, teammate Chennedy Carter provided a vital scoring contribution with a stellar 33 points. However, Seattle’s offense, despite Carter’s efforts, was unable to overcome Chicago’s stifling defense and Reese’s relentless dominance on the boards.

The victory solidifies Chicago’s position in the playoff race, while Seattle will look to regroup and return to form in their upcoming matchup.

However, the spotlight of the night undoubtedly shines on Angel Reese. Her performance continues to solidify her candidacy for Rookie of the Year and secures her place among the WNBA’s record holders.

Klay Thompson gives farewell to Warriors, fans in Instagram post

[ad_1]

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Klay Thompson offered a farewell message to the Bay Area and Golden State fans after departing the Warriors in free agency this week to join the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50 million contract.

On Instagram, Thompson posted to his 17.1 million followers Friday a photo of himself holding his new No. 11 jersey from after being drafted by the Warriors in 2011 with the 11th overall selection out of Washington State.

“Oh Bay Area, there are not enough words and images to convey how I really feel about yall,” Thompson wrote. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for the best times of my life. It was such an honor to put that Dubs jersey on from day 1. I really just wanted to be the best I could be and help bring as many championships as possible to the region. The best part was not the rings though, it was the friendships I made that will last a lifetime.”

The 34-year-old Thompson won four championships with the Warriors alongside Splash Brother Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. The veteran guard missed more than 2 1/2 years — the entire 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons — recovering from surgeries on his left knee and right Achilles before returning in January 2022 and calling the recoveries from consecutive injuries one of the hardest and most grueling things he’d ever done.

Curry had hoped to keep playing with Thompson as they made up one of the NBA’s best backcourts.

“Gonna miss you (at)klaythompson,” Curry shared in his own Instagram post Tuesday. “Even though we won’t finish the journey together, what we did will never be done again. Couldn’t have imagined a better run with you and (Draymond Green). Changed the whole Bay Area. Changed the way the game is played. Killa Klay at the center of it all. Thank you for everything bro. Go enjoy playing basketball and doing what you do. Splash Bros 4 life my guy.”

Thompson had a frustrating 0-for-10 shooting performance in a 118-94 loss at Sacramento in the play-in tournament that ended the Warriors season without a playoff berth after they won the 2022 NBA title. He said when the season ended he wanted to chase a fifth championship before his career is done.

Several times Thompson had expressed his desire to stay with Golden State for his entire career, saying earlier this year, “I would love to be a Warrior for life.”

Instead, the emotional Thompson is moving on with the Mavericks.

Thompson, a regular boater and bay swimmer who loved to sport a captain’s hat that earned him the nickname “Captain Klay,” also expressed his gratitude to Golden State — with a trio of hashtags: #foureverchamps, #splashbros4life and #oaklandforever.

“My family and I would like to thank all ok the amazing people who work tirelessly to make the (at)Warriors organization world-class,” he said. “Don’t be sad it’s over, be happy it happened. Until we meet again. Sea captain out.”

Vanessa Hudgens Condemns Paparazzi for Intrusive Photos After Birth of First Child – Where Is The Buzz

[ad_1]

Vanessa Hudgens has publicly criticized paparazzi who invaded her family’s privacy by photographing them as they left the hospital following the birth of her first child. The actress and singer expressed her frustration in a statement:

“We’re disappointed that our family’s privacy was disrespected and exploited during this very special time due to the greed of a long lens camera feeding the media. Despite all of that, mom, dad, and baby are happy and healthy.”

Hudgens first revealed her pregnancy at this year’s Academy Awards. She was hosting The Oscars Red Carpet Show for the third consecutive year when she shared the news. Hudgens married Tucker, a Major League Baseball player, in December 2023.

Most recently, Hudgens starred in Bad Boys: Ride or Die alongside Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. In a May interview with E! News, she expressed her excitement about sharing her acting career with her future children.

“That’s why I chose things along the way in my career,” she said. “I wanted to make sure that when I did have kids, there would be something for them to watch at every age.”

Hudgens’ statement underscores the ongoing issue of paparazzi invading the personal lives of celebrities, particularly during sensitive and private moments. Despite the intrusion, Hudgens and her family are focusing on their joy and the health of their newborn.

Boxer Ryan Garcia apologizes for using racial slurs

[ad_1]

Ryan Garcia apologized in a series of social media posts on Friday after he used racial slurs against Black people and disparaged Muslims in livestreamed comments.

The 25-year-old Garcia, who was expelled by the World Boxing Council on Thursday over his remarks, also announced on the social media platform X that he was going to rehab.

“I take all responsibility for my words,” Garcia wrote in one post. “And it’s been a tough couple of months as everyone can tell but I AM SORRY.”

Garcia added: “I struggle with substance abuse and it hard for me with everything going on.”

Last month, Garcia was suspended for a year by the New York State Athletic Commission, which also ruled that his April 20 victory over Devin Haney would be considered a no-contest after he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

After his apology, Garcia posted several more times. Among his comments: “I stand on the fact that a black man can be racist” and “In the hood everyone has said the N word.”

Garcia also complained that other fighters had made racist statements without being disciplined by the WBC.

HBCUs Seeing Record Number of Applications

[ad_1]

School is out for summer. But HBCUs across the country only have a few more weeks to enjoy the silence before record numbers of new students hit their campuses in the fall – good news for the schools that have been producing a large percentage of Black professionals and students of color seeking a more nurturing and inclusive college experience.

Susan Heyward on Season Four of ‘The Boys’

As Forbes reported, Howard University saw a 12 percent increase in applications for their incoming freshman class this year, receiving 37,000 applications for just 2,500 seats. Applications to Florida A&M University have almost doubled in the last two years. The Tallahassee HBCU received over 21,000 applications for less than 4,000 seats.

The surge in interest is even impacting lesser-known HBCUs like Edward Waters University in Jacksonville, Florida, which has seen an over 160 percent increase in applications since 2019.

Jennifer Price, Edward Waters’ Vice President of Enrollment Management, told Forbes that admitting more students has helped the school’s “reputation and influence to grow, creating a positive feedback loop that attracts even more high-quality applicants in the future.”

Experts have pointed to several factors that have contributed to the increase in HBCU interest, including conservative’s efforts to dismantle Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs at schools around the country and the Supreme Court’s June 2023 decision to take away colleges and universities’ ability to consider race as a factor in admissions.

HBCUs also have a proven track record of producing alumni who succeed in their chosen fields. According to White House data, 40 percent of all Black engineers, 50 percent of Black lawyers, 70 percent of Black doctors and 80 percent of Black judges.

But as more students apply to HBCUs, more still needs to be done to make sure schools have the resources to keep them there. According to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, HBCUs’ endowments are one-eighth the average size of historically white colleges and universities.

The schools are also doing their part to attract and retain new students by expanding their offerings. Xavier University in New Orleans signed an agreement in April with Ochsner Medical Center to establish a medical school, joining only four other historically Black medical schools in the United States.

Philanthropists are also stepping up to help, with big money donors like Ronda Stryker, MacKenzie Scott and Netflix Chairman and cofounder Reed Hastings contributing millions to HBCUs around the country.

Michael A. Bailey, Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Transfer Services at North Carolina Central University told Forbes that the recognition is long overdue.

“I believe HBCUs are finally getting the recognition they deserve. We are being looked at for the excellent education and environment we produce,’’ he said.

Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’ video dropped, and a victory lap never looked so sweet

[ad_1]

Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Read more opinions on theGrio.

I was in the middle of grilling for a July 4th cookout when my phone started to vibrate constantly. I checked my phone, and the first message I saw was in all caps, “KENDRICK DROPPED THE VIDEO!” Sometime during the day, Kendrick Lamar dropped the video for his mega-hit Drake diss-record “Not Like Us.”

Since I was in the middle of a joyous occasion, I figured I’d peep the video later that evening but my phone kept buzzing. Words and phrases like, “Drake must be so mad” and “brooooo” were part of more than a few group chats. When I finally watched the video — this morning — I laughed to myself. Drake is probably entirely over Kendrick and “Not Like Us” at this point; I doubt he cares anymore. The dirt has already been kicked on his hip-hop grave. Drake is smart enough to know this. So to me, the video for “Not Like Us” isn’t so much about Drake but about being petty and putting on for Compton and Los Angeles.

And Kendrick is really having a good time.

That’s what I kept thinking to myself throughout the entire runtime of the video. It’s a victory lap; Kendrick pulled several parts of Los Angeles culture and put them into a video. For a guy whose catalog borders on the serious, he seems to truly be enjoying himself. I mean, he put an OVO (Drake’s October’s Very Own label) piñata in the video and busted it open. I’ll bet he and Dave Free (Kendrick Lamar’s creative partner and the video’s co-director with Lamar) got an absolute kick out of storyboarding the video. We have clowning and crumping and Tam’s Burgers (a spot in Compton) and Kendrick doing what looks like the L.A. front yard workout routine with cinder blocks, which reminds me of every L.A.-based hood movie from the ’90s. There’s DeMar DeRozan and DJ Mustard and Kendrick’s former TDE labelmates and many people from many neighborhoods. Oh, and Kendrick’s longtime partner and the mother of his kids, Whitney Alford, who was at the center of some of Drake’s allegations against Kendrick, is in the video C-walking with him and their kids. And the caged owl — lawd, the caged owl.

Recommended Stories

It’s such a hit-song video, and it looks like so much fun that you can’t help but realize how much of a good spring and summer Kendrick is having. This video was the first in a long time to make me see him and think Kendrick is truly having a good time with all of this. I suppose I would be too if I played it all as smartly as he has.

Consider this: While Drake is the bigger artist and will remain so, Kendrick entirely usurped all of his cool and then demonstrated just how culturally steeped he is in L.A. and hip-hop. At every turn, he used both his artistry and the machine he has behind him (not every artist could put on a diss-record concert backed by Amazon Prime) to create a true hip-hop moment. I teach a class on opinion writing at Howard University; when classes start in August, I will most certainly be using Kendrick’s summer as a talking point to help my students understand how to establish and support their opinions. I will be using Kendrick Lamar’s 2024 to teach an academic course. That is wild. But that’s also how good a 2024 he’s having.

The video for “Not Like Us” feels like that to me. Because Kendrick’s albums are largely conceptual (and tend to be pretty ambitious, which can be a mixed bag), you can forget that he is a rapper from Compton who cares about the culture of both hip-hop and L.A. This has been a reminder. When he had a chance to put on for both, he did in a big, big way. He found a way to blend the culture with the commercial, and it worked perfectly. There are videos of little kids singing along to “Not Like Us.” My 3-year-old was running around the house saying “O-V-Hoe” (I’m not proud of this; I told his brothers to stop letting him watch TikTok videos!). Kendrick has done this entire moment right with a song that you have to play everywhere and a visual for it that is as enjoyable as it is deliberate.

Kendrick won the battle, and in this video, he is enjoying the victory.
