MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Terrence Shannon Jr.’s journey to the NBA was longer than that of most first-rounders, including a trying last year in college with an off-the-court challenge that cast doubt over his professional prospects.
Shannon landed with the Minnesota Timberwolves, a place that sure looks like an ideal fit.
The Timberwolves took Shannon out of Illinois with the 27th overall draft pick, their original selection, in the first round last week after making a trade with San Antonio to obtain the eighth overall pick for the rights to Rob Dillingham from Kentucky.
Shannon was found not guilty last month on a rape charge after a jury in Kansas spent less than two hours deliberating. He’d been accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a bar last year while on a road trip to attend a football game, leading to a suspension by the school that eventually was halted by a federal judge’s ruling that his civil rights had been violated. Shannon testified at the trial he’d never seen the woman. His lawyers called the case a “blind accusation.”
The seriousness of the situation loomed over Shannon and the Illini all season, but they rarely wavered. Shannon, who was an All-Big Ten first team and All-American third-team selection by The Associated Press, was voted the Most Outstanding Player of the Big Ten Tournament after a three-day thrill ride at Target Center gave the Illini the title.
“It made me a better leader,” Shannon said Wednesday. “I just gravitated toward my team and my coaches more, my family.”
The two rookie guards were introduced at a news conference in the Target Center atrium, after they each threw out ceremonial first pitches the night before at a Twins game across the street.
The Timberwolves also rounded out their roster with an agreement Wednesday on a one-year, $3.3 million contract with free agent forward Joe Ingles, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been finalized.
Ingles spent the first eight seasons of his career with Utah, where he played with current Timberwolves Mike Conley and Rudy Gobert. The 6-foot-9 native of Australia will join his fourth team in four years after playing for Milwaukee and Orlando the previous two seasons.
When the accusation arose last December, Shannon for legal reasons stopped doing interviews despite being the star player of a top-15 team that reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament before getting blown out by eventual champion UConn.
Two months ago at the NBA pre-draft combine, he finally broke his silence, though because the trial was looming he stopped short of discussing any subject beyond basketball.
“I feel like I’m a good kid. I make sure everybody’s good, and I just take care of everybody around me,” Shannon said then in Chicago.
The Timberwolves were adamant about the quality of Shannon’s character. President of basketball operations Tim Connelly said the team did “a ton” of due diligence and was nothing but encouraged about the person and the player it was getting.
“He was on the wrong end of a really unfortunate situation and his ability to play through that and play winning basketball for a great coach in Brad Underwood, we just think brings toughness,” Connelly said.
On a team already established as a true championship contender that has all but one reserve — Kyle Anderson, who’s on his way to Golden State — coming back from the regular rotation, Dillingham and Shannon can learn from a stalwart like Conley and watch a superstar like Anthony Edwards without being forced into too much action too soon.
“I wouldn’t think I’d go to a contender right off the bat,” Dillingham said. “I’m just happy that I’ve got to learn from so many vets on the team.”
After averaging 23 points per game and becoming one of the best two-way players in the country last season, Shannon at age 23 with five seasons of major conference experience — he started his college career at Texas Tech — ought to be as rotation-ready as any of the recent draft picks on Minnesota’s roster. Dillingham is just 19. Shannon is older than second-rounders from the previous two drafts, too: Jaylen Clark (22), Leonard Miller (20) and Josh Minott (21).
“There’s roles to be had,” coach Chris Finch said. “There’s roles to be earned.”

Two former employees of the Calhoun City Schools system have been indicted on charges of sexual contact with students, according to documents from the Gordon County Superior Court. Railey Greeson and Brooklyn Shuler, both ex-employees of the school district, were formally charged on Thursday with first-degree “sexual contact by employee or agent” following a grand jury special presentment.
The indictment alleges that Greeson engaged in “sexual intercourse and sexually explicit conduct” with a male student between late October 2021 and early January 2022. Court records suggest that Greeson “reasonably should have known” the male was a student, thus violating Georgia Code 16-6-5.1 (b). She faces two counts of sexual contact by an employee or agent.
Shuler is charged with one count of the same offense. She is accused of engaging in similar conduct with a different male student during the same period. Like Greeson, Shuler “reasonably should have known” the male was a student, also violating Georgia Code 16-6-5.1 (b).
The ages of the male students involved have not been disclosed.
Both Greeson and Shuler surrendered to authorities and were booked at the Gordon County Jail. They have since been released.

WASHINGTON (AP) — By the time Vice President Kamala Harris stepped into her third fundraiser since President Joe Biden’s disastrous debate last week, she had her routine down.
Yes, she conceded to a few dozen donors in San Francisco, the president’s performance was “not his finest hour.” However, she said, “the outcome of this election cannot be determined by one day in June.”
It’s not the kind of rhetorical two-step that any running mate would want to be practicing just over four months before the election, but Harris has little choice. She’s trying to help Biden stave off a death spiral in their campaign for a second term after the 81-year-old president’s faltering debate appearance magnified concerns about his ability to beat Donald Trump and serve another four years.
The moment could hardly be more delicate for the 59-year-old Harris, who is the first woman, Black person and person of South Asian descent to serve as vice president. Although some Democrats have pointed to her as a logical successor if Biden steps aside, others are drawing up wish lists of potential replacements that don’t include her on the ticket at all.
Depending on how the coming days and weeks unfold, her work on Biden’s behalf could lead to a political dead end, or secure her future within the party by providing fresh opportunities to prove her doubters wrong.
Chad Griffin, a member of the campaign’s national finance committee, said the White House was fortunate to have a vice president that is “tough as nails” and “out there defending the president and talking about the stakes of this election.”
“They’re a team,” he said. “And we’re increasingly seeing the other half of that team.”
Biden and Harris had one of their occasional private lunches on Wednesday, and afterward they held a call with campaign staff to vow that they would push forward together.
“Joe Biden has devoted his life to fighting for the people of our country,” Harris said, according to a campaign official who was on the call. “In this moment I know all of us are ready to fight for him.”
None of this comes without political danger for Democrats. Harris’ favorability ratings are low, and she’s a frequent target for Republicans, who say she’s waiting in the wings in case Biden isn’t able to complete a second term. “Vote Joe Biden today, get Kamala Harris tomorrow,” said an advertisement from Trump’s campaign.
But for now, Harris is Biden’s top advocate as he faces calls to shake up his campaign or end his reelection effort. Her presence has been a balm for some anxious Democrats, such as the donors who gathered for a fundraiser in Los Angeles on Saturday.
Harris paced the stage with a handheld mic — Biden sometimes uses teleprompters even during fundraisers — as she acknowledged “the elephant in the room,” meaning Thursday’s debate. Then she swung her focus to Trump, who she described as a liar and a threat to democracy.
“You see how much hasn’t changed?” Harris said. “So, let’s deal with what we’ve got, right?”
Griffin said “there was this sigh of relief” from donors afterward. Some said “we want to see more of that” or “the gloves are really off.”
Only 39% of U.S. adults have a favorable view of Harris, which is in line with Biden’s 40%, according to an AP-NORC poll conducted in June. However, her unfavorable rating is 49%, lower than Biden’s 57%, and 12% said they weren’t familiar enough with Harris to have an opinion of her.
The numbers mean there’s risk and reward in emphasizing Harris, with room for public opinion to swing in either direction.
There’s no easy way for Democrats to force Biden to relinquish the nomination, which is scheduled to be finalized with a virtual vote before the party’s convention in Chicago in August. There’s also no precedent for a major party presidential candidate to drop out of the race at this point.
But if Biden steps aside, there’s a wide array of Democrats who are primed for a shot at the White House, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
However, there are clear advantages for Harris. Under campaign finance rules, she could easily tap the money that’s been raised for Biden’s reelection. She also has hard-to-obtain foreign policy experience, after crisscrossing the globe on the White House’s behalf and meeting with dozens of world leaders.
Rep. Jim Clyburn, an influential Democrat from the key primary state of South Carolina and a co-chair of Biden’s campaign, said he would back Harris if the president wasn’t in the race.
“This party should not, in any way, do anything to work around Ms. Harris,” he told MSNBC.
The vice presidency can be a trap for ambitious politicians, and they’re more likely to ascend to the presidency because of death than get elected on their own.
Oftentimes they’re too closely tied to the current administration to represent a path forward, or voters are accustomed to seeing them as a sidekick rather than a leader, said Joel K. Goldstein, a vice presidential historian.
“The vice presidency is the best springboard,” he said. “But being vice president doesn’t mean that you’re going to automatically get the nomination, or going to get the nomination without an effort.”
During an interview with The Associated Press last year, Harris dismissed the idea of her replacing Biden as “hypothetical,” saying “Joe Biden is going to be fine, so that is not going to come to fruition.”
However, she said every vice president has needed to be ready to step in if necessary.
“I’m no different,” Harris said.
Harris and Biden advisers said the vice president’s role hasn’t shifted since the debate. She was already leading outreach to key demographic groups, such as Black people and young voters, and pushing for reproductive rights after the Supreme Court ended the nationwide right to abortion.
Harris has also helped Biden fend off questions about his age before, such as when special counsel Robert Hur released his report on the president’s handling of classified documents. Although Hur concluded that no criminal charges were warranted, he described Biden as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
The following day, Harris called Hur’s report “gratuitous, inaccurate and inappropriate.”
But there’s no question that the spotlight on Harris has brightened since the debate. A preview came on Thursday shortly after the debate ended.
Her team had previously arranged for a series of television interviews, which is standard practice for big moments like the State of the Union. But as Biden faltered, it quickly became apparent that Harris would be the White House’s first line of defense.
She helped set the tone for the campaign’s response, saying that Biden had “a slow start” and shifting the focus to his overall record.
“I’m not gonna spend all night with you talking about the last 90 minutes when I’ve been watching the last 3.5 years of performance,” she said.
The interviews drew some over-the-top praise from commentators who compared Harris’ coherence with Biden’s convoluted answers.
The vice president “has been right under their nose,” said Jamal Simmons, Harris’ former communications director. “This is who she is.”
“People who are on Team Harris are very familiar with her being underestimated,” he said.

On Sunday, Usher received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 BET Awards.
But what was supposed to be a momentous occasion turned into an incident mired in confusion due to most of the R&B crooner’s speech being “bleeped out” and hard to follow. And while many believed the silence was due to him using a plethora of profanity—what was actually the culprit was an alleged “audio malfunction,” according to BET.
“Due to an audio malfunction during the LIVE telecast, portions of his speech were inadvertently muted,” the network said in a statement to Billboard. “Celebrating global icon Usher on our stage with a star-studded tribute and having him accept his award with a heartfelt speech was an honor… We extend our sincere apologies to Usher as we couldn’t be more grateful for his participation in Culture’s Biggest Night.”
Later on, they posted the mostly unedited version of Usher’s speech on their YouTube and replayed the awards ceremony in its entirety with the speech shown in full on television. In watching it back, it doesn’t appear to that we missed too much except him reflecting on the absence of his father, his motivation to be a star at age thirteen and thanking more people including his mother, Kirk Franklin and others who helped mold him into the man and artist he is today.
But what was arguably the most head-scratching moment of all was when the “Good, Good” singer called out his ex-wife and the mother of his eldest sons Tameka Foster in reference to his “turning of a new leaf” and attempts at trying to make things a bit more cohesive between him, her and his new wife Jenn Goicoechea.
“I’m trying Tameka,” Usher said, which prompted a myriad of reactions on X/Twitter.
“Did usher just said “I’m trying Tameka” ???? Lmfaooo cut the camerasssss,” one user wrote.
“Not ‘I’m trying Tameka’ in front of the kids you got with the lady,” another said.
“I’m trying Tameka” need to go on a shirt. That’s about to be my Slack OOO message,” wrote another.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — With school out for the summer and temperatures rising across the country, many families will visit the beach, lake or local swimming pool. Now is the time to review safety tips to keep children safe around water.
Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause of unintentional death for children in the 5 to 14 age group, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In the United States, 973 children under the age of 19 drowned in 2021, and another 6,500 were treated in emergency rooms following near drowning incidents, according to Gary Karton of Safe Kids Worldwide, a nonprofit organization working to prevent childhood injury.
In fact, more drownings occur in the summer, and specifically in July, than any other time of the year, according to the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Palm Beach County Ocean Rescue lifeguard Daniel Barnickel said there always should be an adult monitoring the water.
“As a whole, never swim alone,” he said.
Taking the time to go over safety procedures and rules before heading to the pool or beach can benefit children and their parents.
The most important safety feature of a backyard swimming pool is a barrier, such as a safety fence, to prevent unsupervised access to the water.
Many children who drowned at home did so during times they were not expected to be in the water, according to the American Red Cross. In some cases, children were out of sight for less than five minutes and in the care of one or both parents when they slipped into the pool and drowned, the agency said.
That said, it is vital to make sure children learn to swim. There are many programs that teach children to swim, including Red Cross swimming courses across the U.S.
If a child goes missing, remember that seconds count. Check the water first, safety experts advise. It’s also important to have appropriate equipment available at home. This includes something to throw into the water for a child to grab onto, a cell phone to call for help, life jackets and a first aid kit.
All children should learn to step or jump into water that’s above their head and safely return to the surface and also be able to float or tread water, according to Safe Kids Worldwide.
They should also be able to quickly turn around in the water and find a safe place, combine breathing with moving forward in the water and get out of the water.
If several adults are at the pool, beach or lake with a group of children, choose a water watcher who can have eyes on the children at all times. It’s a great idea to rotate the water watcher among the adults for brief amounts of time, such as 15-minute intervals, experts at Safe Kids Worldwide recommend.
While at the pool or around water, it’s advisable to avoid distractions. Put away phones, books and magazines, because drowning is often silent and can happen in less than five minutes.
When you’re finished swimming, make sure to remove all floats and pool toys so young children won’t be enticed to reach for them.
Teach children to stay away from pool drains or suction devices, which can entrap swimmers’ hair or limbs.
Since 2014, all public pools and spas in the U.S. have been required to comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act, which was named after a 7-year-old girl who died after being caught by the strong suction of a hot tub drain in 2002. Her mother lobbied Congress to require drain covers and other pool safety features.
But even with those safety elements, experts say it’s a good practice to check the drains and devices before children get into a pool.
Always swim with a buddy, or in an area supervised by a lifeguard.
“Make sure that you don’t overestimate your abilities,” Barnickel said. “Know your limits.”
Have young or inexperienced children wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets. The size of the life jacket should be based on the child’s height and weight. Never substitute arm floaties or inflatable swimming rings for life jackets.
The best practice is to keep children within an arm’s reach of an adult at all times when in the water and teach them to always ask permission to go near the water.
Enforce safety rules, including no running or pushing on the pool deck and no dunking people in the water. It’s also a good idea to keep them from chewing gum or eating while swimming or jumping in the water.
Experts also recommend making sure children know the depth of the water so they don’t dive into the shallow end and get injured.
Open water, such as the ocean or a lake, is much different than a backyard swimming pool.
Children need to understand there can be limited visibility and uneven surfaces in the ocean and lakes. They also need to be taught about currents and undertow, which can pull them under water and away from the shore.
“Year after year in South Florida, rip currents claim more lives than every weather-related hazard combined,” Barnickel said. “We’ve seen locals come here that have been going to the beach their whole life, and they’ve never been caught in a rip current, or they think that they have and they know what to do. And they’ll get pulled out into a rip current. We’ll go out and get them, and they say, ‘I can’t believe that happened.’”
When at a beach or lake, it’s important to use designated swimming or recreational areas. Watch for signs posted about water hazards, as well as the times that lifeguards will be present.
