NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Veteran NFL wide receiver Randall Cobb is thanking Nashville firefighters for saving his family after a house fire.
Cobb shared a statement and video on social media Wednesday that his family is safe and healthy along with their dog. Cobb said he couldn’t thank the fire department enough for their quick action.
“I can’t get the image of the brave firefighter getting into position out of my head; he didn’t even have water to shoot yet,” Cobb wrote. “I truly thought the cars were going to explode and that we would lose him to this tragedy. He is a true hero.”
The Nashville Fire Department did not immediately respond to a message from The Associated Press on Thursday.
Cobb said they didn’t know what, if anything, will be salvageable. He thanked close friends for giving them a temporary roof for himself, his wife and their children. His post included video and photos of the home’s damaged garage, including a vehicle, capped by a photo of his wife and children safely in bed.

Gabrielle Dennis Talks ‘The Big Door Prize’ & What She’d Like Her ‘Life Potential’ To Be
Introduced by music legends Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the latter of which credited the Atlanta artist for getting him out a “creative depression” at one point, Usher was honored by a slew of mostly women artists (and Donald Glover who opened with “U Don’t Have to Call.”
When it was time to receive the award, Jam and lewis brought up Babyface and L.A. Reid, the two who created LaFace records and introduced the musical world to Usher in ‘94. Met with a thunderous standing ovation, Usher was overcome with emotion before getting into his speech—which was unfortunately mostly censored out due to amount of alleged profanity he interspersed throughout.
From the snippets still aired on TV, the “Love in This Club” singer: declared this year to be the ‘Year of the Fathers,’ claim he’d gotten “fucked over” by some industry people (not including BabyFace or L.A. Reid or any of the folks he thanked in his speech), called out the mother of his eldest children Tameka Foster and claimed he was trying to “take the first step”at things being more cohesive between the two of them; thanked his fans, wife, and children; and reflected on whether or not it was too early for him to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
“I’m still running and gunning and I still love this shit like I did when I was eight-years-old,” he said at one point. And from his over 30-year-long career, multiple Grammys, 150 million records sold worldwide—it’s clear Usher’s reign is far from being over. And to that we say “Yeah!”

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Fred Richard envisioned this long ago. All of it.
The confetti. The flashing lights. The adrenaline rush of hearing his name called as an Olympian.
The charismatic 20-year-old who has made it his life’s mission to make men’s gymnastics relevant in the United States knew reaching the Olympics would be a vital step in the process.
And now it’s here. Emphatically.
Richard will headline the five-man U.S. team that will head to Paris next month with a legitimate chance to medal after winning the Olympic trials on Saturday.
“It’s like a new mountain in my life,” Richard said. “And I’m ready to climb it.”

It certainly looks that way. Richard posted a steady and occasionally spectacular two-day all-around total of 170.500 at trials, just ahead of three-time national champion Brody Malone at 170.300.
Richard, known as “Frederick Flips” to his hundreds of thousands of social media followers, has spent years trying to nudge men’s gymnastics toward the spotlight through creative viral videos that often include collaborations with athletes in other sports.
The lights don’t get any brighter than the ones Richard and Olympic teammates Malone, Asher Hong, Paul Juda and Stephen Nedoroscik will compete under at Bercy Arena.
Nine months after earning a bronze at the 2023 world championships — the men’s program’s first at a major international competition in nearly a decade — Richard and the rest of the Americans believe they’re capable of even more this summer.
“It’s like we shouldn’t even be aiming for even just a medal,” said Richard, who also earned a bronze in the all-around at worlds last fall. “We should be aiming for gold and we’re going to land on something.”
The Americans have spent the last three years overhauling their program after finishing well off the podium at the Tokyo Olympics. They revamped their scoring system, offering bonus points at domestic meets for athletes who attempted more challenging skills.
The goal was to close the chasm in overall difficulty that had developed between the U.S. and longtime superpowers China and Japan. When the Americans saluted the judges for their first event in Tokyo they were already six points behind, the difference between the cumulative difficulty of their routines compared to the teams they were chasing.
That gap will be down to two points when the U.S. steps onto the floor during Olympic qualifying on July 27, giving them a legitimate chance to finish on the podium.
“(We are in) a much different position now,” high performance director Brett McClure said. “We’re going to be able to control our own destiny.”

And they’ll do it with the 24-year-old Malone, whose career was nearly derailed by a devastating right knee injury in March 2023. Three surgeries, 15 months and countless hours of physical therapy later, Malone’s knee is not perfect but better. His gymnastics might be, too.
Malone methodically worked his way back from the brink, though the last few weeks have been a blur. He didn’t put together a full floor routine until May, though he hasn’t exactly looked rusty. He cruised to a national title earlier this month and would have topped Richard at trials if not for a sloppy — by his standards — high bar routine on Saturday.
Recommended Stories
Considering where he was last fall when he watched the men’s program he was supposed to be the standard-bearer for between Tokyo and Paris roll on without him, Malone will more than take it.
“It crept up on me real quick I’m just super grateful for all the medical staff and everyone has helped me get back to this point,” Malone said. “I really couldn’t have done it without them.”
Juda and Hong, members of last year’s world championship team, will join Malone and Richard as the core of what will be a relatively young American team. Nedoroscik is 25. Malone is 24. Juda turns 23 on July 7. Richard and Hong are all of 20.
The quiet and unassuming Juda broke down in tears multiple times in the aftermath while Hong was relieved after a somewhat nightmarish performance at nationals — thanks in part to what he believes was rough treatment by the judges gave him little margin for error heading into trials.
“It was kind of like a battle between me and the judges,” Hong said. “That was kind of the goal. Like, ‘Try and find something (wrong) in this routine, I dare you.’”
Khoi Young and Shane Wiskus will serve as the alternates. Wiskus, a member of the 2020 Olympic team, is retiring at the end of the competition season. The Minnesota native — who left his home state not long after the University of Minnesota cut its men’s program — drank in every ovation in what may have been the last performance of his career.

While Wiskus is stepping away, Richard is poised to move into his prime. He began pointing toward Paris long ago while growing up in the Boston suburbs. Now it’s finally here and he is eager to show that there is plenty of substance underneath all that showmanship.
“I want to be a medalist Olympian, that’s my personality,” he said. “There’s always more to go. And I’m excited to just keep gunning for it.”

On this week’s episode of theGrio’s “The Hill with April Ryan,” U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., lays out why it’s America’s moral responsibility to help the people of Haiti amid unrest there, and she addresses how stabilizing the Caribbean nation is in the best interests of the United States. Pressley, the co-founder and co-chair of the House Haiti Caucus, said America’s Black and brown migrants are disproportionately impacted by America’s “broken” system. The congresswoman, who said her district contains the third-largest Haitian population in the nation, said Black Americans owe “so much” to the people of Haiti, particularly for their role in modeling “Black resistance, independence and liberation.”
“They have experienced so many injustices rooted in colonialism and unjust foreign policy,” she told theGrio. Pressley said the influx of Haitians seeking asylum at the U.S. border is a result of years-long destabilization. But in order to address the concerns of asylum seekers in the U.S., the federal government must stabilize Haiti by halting all deportations and providing economic assistance and political infrastructure.

The family of 20-year-old NBA draftee Kyle Filipowski has taken to social media to accuse his 28-year-old Mormon girlfriend of grooming him. Filipowski, who recently joined the Utah Jazz after falling to the second round in the NBA Draft, is reportedly no longer in contact with his family, a situation his relatives attribute to the influence of his girlfriend.
According to Filipowski’s family, the relationship began under unusual circumstances. His girlfriend, who graduated from the University of Alabama in 2018, was previously his babysitter. Their romantic involvement reportedly started when Filipowski was still in high school, with the first public photo of them together appearing on her Instagram from his high school prom in 2022. Additionally, there is a tagged group photo from 2017, suggesting a long history between them.
The situation came to light during NBA Draft interviews, where Filipowski appeared visibly nervous when questioned about his personal life. Sources suggest that this tension may have contributed to his drop to the second round, a surprising outcome for the talented player. Now, Filipowski heads to the Utah Jazz, a team based in the heart of Mormon country, adding another layer of intrigue to this already wild story.
Filipowski’s brother has been particularly vocal about the alleged manipulation. He claims that two years ago, Filipowski was coerced into severing ties with his family. “He sent them an email and everything, basically a goodbye letter,” the brother reportedly stated.

Saturday Night Live has been a pillar of American comedy since the mid-70s. When 19-year-old Eddie Murphy joined the cast from 1980-1985, many said those were the best seasons of SNL.
America’s Funniest Home Videos’ Alfonso Ribeiro Plays That’s So Random
After his departure, Murphy starred in box-buster movies like “Coming to America” and “Mulan.” Although Murphy was a stand-up comedian before SNL, he admits the show helped propel his career on the big screen.
“I had a blast up here,” Murphy recalled during a 2020 SNL interview. “There isn’t a better place for me to have been than here.”
So why did it take him 20 years to return to SNL? There has been much speculation over the years, but in a recent interview with the New York Times, Murphy said David Spade’s 1995 joke about him was the cause.
Spade became a member of SNL in 1990 — well after Murphy left, but in 1995, as part of his “Hollywood Minute” sketch, Spade said laughing next to a photo of Murphy “Look children, it’s a falling star. Make a wish.”

Spade’s jab directly followed the release of the film, “Vampire in Brooklyn,” starring Murphy alongside Angela Bassett, which tanked in theaters.
Murphy did not take light to Spade’s comment about his career. In fact, Murphy told the New York Times “‘I’m one of the family, and you’re f–king with me like that?’ It hurt my feelings like that.”
According to Murphy, it wasn’t just about a fellow SNL cast member making an insensitive joke about him. “I know that he can’t just say that,” Murphy said. “A joke has to go through channels, so the producers thought it was okay to say that. And all the people that have been on the show, you’ve never heard nobody make a joke about anybody’s career.”
Murphy called the joke a “cheap shot,” and although he did not further explain, he said there was racist intent behind it.
After the episode aired, Spade said the “Harlem Nights” star called and let him have it! In his 2015 memoir, Spade wrote how Murphy “hated” him, and it wasn’t until 20 years after his “stupid joke” that the pair cut the tension and squashed the beef.
Unfortunately for fans, this meant Murphy would not return to SNL until the show’s 40th anniversary in 2015. Since then, Murphy has also hosted the show in 2019.
