Sean “Diddy” Combs has offered a public apology following the release of a disturbing video showing him hitting his ex-girlfriend Cassandra Ventura, often known as Cassie. The event, which took place in 2016 at the InterContinental Hotel in Century City, Los Angeles, aroused worldwide outrage.
The film, which was released on Friday, shows a horrific incident shot from multiple perspectives. It depicts Diddy following Cassie down a hotel corridor while wearing a towel before assaulting her near the elevators. The footage has sparked widespread criticism, prompting Diddy to address the issue publicly.
In the video posted to his Instagram page, Diddy expressed deep remorse for his actions. “That behavior in that video is inexcusable,” he admitted. “I take full responsibility for my actions. I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now.”
Diddy further disclosed that he sought professional help in the aftermath of the incident, including therapy and rehabilitation. “I sought out professional help; I had to go on therapy and rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I’m so sorry,” he shared.
He emphasized his commitment to personal growth and improvement. “I’m committed to being a better man, every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m truly sorry,” he concluded.
The release of this video, followed by Diddy’s apology, elicited conflicting emotions. Some folks have already forgiven Diddy for his actions because he addressed God several times in his video on the Lord’s Day. Others called it phony because he did not even apologize to the woman he assaulted in his public apology video. Cassie has yet to comment publicly on the video or Diddy’s apologies.

In honor of Black Music Month in June, The Root is gearing up to launch an exclusive series about the history of Black music, full of stories and videos telling the story behind some of our favorite songs by Black artists. To kick things off, we’re starting with a song that is still a banger over two decades after its release – Shaggy’s 2000 hit, “It Wasn’t Me.”
Black Women Had Some Major Firsts In Last Week’s Midterm Elections
The song hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 2001, a first for the artist, and it received a GRAMMY nomination for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. And the hook is undeniably catchy:
“But she caught me on the counter (It wasn’t me), Saw me bangin’ on the sofa (It wasn’t me), I even had her in the shower (It wasn’t me).”
But if you think the song is about Shaggy trying to deny, deny, deny after getting caught with another woman, he’s here to let you know that you got it all wrong. As he told PEOPLE in 2023, the song is actually an anti-cheating song, something most people miss because they don’t listen to the song all the way through.
Shaggy – It Wasn’t Me
“There’s a part in the record where it’s a conversation between two people and you have one guy, which is me at that point, giving that bad advice, like, ‘Yo, bro, how could you get caught? Just tell her, It wasn’t me,’” he said. “And then at the end, the guy says, ‘I’m going to tell her that I’m sorry for the pain that I’ve caused. I’ve been listening to your reasoning, it makes no sense at all. Going to tell her that I’m sorry for the pain that I’ve caused. You might think that you’re a player, but you’re completely lost.’”
Although most people miss the message he was trying to convey, Shaggy said he’s not mad. The fact that people think it’s a song about cheating has only helped boost the song’s staying power.
“What’s so good about that song is that it was relatable throughout the years. People do have this whole situation with cheating, and the thing about that is that you could be young, old, Black, white, straight, gay, whatever it is, it’s still relatable,” he said.
VAN HORN, Texas (AP) — America’s first Black astronaut candidate finally rocketed into space 60 years later, flying with Jeff Bezos’ rocket company on Sunday.
Ed Dwight was an Air Force pilot when President John F. Kennedy championed him as a candidate for NASA’s early astronaut corps. But he wasn’t picked for the 1963 class.
Dwight, now 90, got to experience a few minutes of weightlessness with five other passengers aboard the Blue Origin capsule as it skimmed space.
Launch officials said all of the astronauts were well shortly after the capsule parachuted down after a flight of roughly 10 minutes.

The brief flight from West Texas made Dwight the new record-holder for oldest person in space — nearly two months older than “Star Trek” actor William Shatner was when he went up in 2021.
It was Blue Origin’s first crew launch in nearly two years. The company was grounded following a 2022 accident in which the booster came crashing down but the capsule full of experiments safely parachuted to the ground. Flights resumed last December, but with no one aboard. This was Blue Origin’s seventh time flying space tourists.
Dwight, a sculptor from Denver, was joined by four business entrepreneurs from the U.S. and France and a retired accountant. Their ticket prices were not disclosed; Dwight’s seat was sponsored in part by the nonprofit Space for Humanity.

Dwight was among the potential astronauts the Air Force recommended to NASA. But he wasn’t chosen for the 1963 class, which included eventual Gemini and Apollo astronauts, including Apollo 11’s Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. NASA didn’t select Black astronauts until 1978, and Guion Bluford became the first African American in space in 1983. Three years earlier, the Soviets launched the first Black astronaut, Arnaldo Tamayo Mendez, a Cuban of African descent.
After leaving the military in 1966, Dwight joined IBM and started a construction company, before earning a master’s degree in sculpture in the late 1970s. He’s since dedicated himself to art. His sculptures focus on Black history and include memorials and monuments across the country. Several of his sculptures have flown into space.

Sean “Diddy” Combs has apologized for the horrific video that surfaced this weekend of him physically assaulting ex-girlfriend Cassie, but in the minds of many, it’s too little too late.
‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Star Sonequa Martin-Green on the fifth season & On Being the Franchise’s First Black Female Captain and Lead
On Friday afternoon, CNN released graphic footage from March 2016 that showed Combs assaulting Cassie at a hotel. The singer left the hotel room, and Combs chased after her with a towel around his waist as she approached the elevator. He violently throws her to the ground, kicks her, and drags her back into the hallway.
Combs posted an Instagram video on Sunday morning, stating that he takes “full responsibility for my actions in that video” and that he was “disgusted” with himself.
“I was fucked up. I hit rock bottom. But I make no excuses,” he said. “… I’ve been going to therapy, and going to rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I’m so sorry. But I’m committed to be a better man each and every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m truly sorry.”
The video mirrored an account that Cassie shared in her explosive lawsuit in November 2023, stating that she had tried to escape the hotel while he was asleep after he drunkenly punched her in the face and gave her a black eye. Combs, according to the lawsuit, paid the hotel $50,000 for the security footage. A day after the lawsuit was issued, Combs settled with Cassie out of court.
On social media, people are unmoved by Combs’ apology — especially since as recently as December 2023, he released a statement that insisted he “did not do any of the things awful things being alleged.”
User @_KimChanel_ stated that his apology came across as “disingenuous” after his previous denial. “These are things manipulators do and say tho,” she concluded. @keatingssixth also called out Combs. “Diddy talkin bout ‘reflecting’ on the ‘darkest times of his life,’” she wrote, “meanwhile the darkest times lasted decades. SHUT UP!!”
Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu tweeted that Combs deserves to be in prison for his actions. “Forgiveness is not substitute for Accountability. Any apology should be to Cassie & every woman Sean Combs violently abused & assaulted,” he wrote. “…This apology stinks of appeasing the public not the women he hurt. It’s bullshit.”
There are also a small crowd offering forgiveness for his apology.
“Nobody is perfect. Only God can judge us,” @cleanamogul posted. “Stay blessed my brother @Diddy.”
“Maybe Diddy apology is sincere,” pondered @ItsAllForeign1 . “Only God knows. I hope he apologized to Cassie.”
The public square’s conclusion seems to be loud and clear, and his business partners have cut ties. But there’s no word yet on if Combs will see any legal repercussions to his actions.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sean “Diddy” Combs admitted that he beat his ex-girlfriend Cassie in a hotel hallway in 2016 after CNN released video of the attack, saying in a video apology he was “truly sorry” and his actions were “inexcusable.”
“I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now,” the music mogul said in a video statement posted Sunday to Instagram and Facebook.
The security video aired Friday shows Combs, wearing only a white towel, punching and kicking Cassie, an R&B singer who was his protege and longtime girlfriend at the time. The footage also shows Combs shoving and dragging Cassie, and throwing a vase in her direction.
Cassie, whose legal name is Cassandra Ventura, sued Combs in November over what she said was years of sexual, physical and emotional abuse. The suit was settled the next day, but spurred intense scrutiny of Combs, with several more lawsuits filed in the following months, along with a federal criminal sex-trafficking investigation that led authorities to raid Combs’ mansions in Los Angeles and Miami.
He had denied the allegations in the lawsuits, but neither he nor his representatives had responded to the newly emerged video until Sunday.

“It’s so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you got to do that,” Diddy says on the video. He adds, “I went and I sought out professional help. I got into going to therapy, going to rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I’m so sorry. But I’m committed to be a better man each and every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m truly sorry.”
Combs is looking somber and wearing a T-shirt in the selfie-style apology video, and appears to be on a patio. It is the hip-hop mogul’s most direct response and first apology after six months of allegations that have threatened his reputation and career.
In December, after Ventura and at least three other women had filed lawsuits against him, Combs posted a statement on Instagram broadly denying the truth of all of them.
“Let me absolutely clear. I did not do any of the awful things being alleged,” the post said.

The security camera video, dated March 5, 2016, closely resembles the description of an incident at an InterContinental Hotel in the Century City area of Los Angeles described in Ventura’ lawsuit.
The suit alleges that Combs paid the hotel $50,000 for the security video immediately after the incident. Neither he or his representatives have addressed that specific allegation. CNN did not say how it obtained the footage.
The suit said Ventura had been trying to get away from a sleeping Combs, who had already punched her in the face before the video began.
Combs is not in danger of being criminally prosecuted for the beating. The statutes of limitations for the assault and battery charges he would be likely to face expired years ago.
The same is true of many of the allegations in the lawsuits, but the federal investigators following Combs are likely looking for potential crimes they can bring under the law.
Ventura signed to Diddy’s label in 2005. The two had an on-again-off-again romantic relationship for more than a decade starting in 2007.
Bianca Censori’s family and friends are growing concerned about her relationship with controversial musician Kanye West, feeling she is being used to promote his new endeavor into the adult film industry.
According to an inside source who spoke with the Daily Mail, many close to Bianca feel West is using the 29-year-old to promote his new business, Yeezy Porn, raising concerns about her engagement in what they regard as sexual impropriety.
“The fact that he is dragging her into the adult film world with him and using her as a billboard to promote sexual indecency is absolutely appalling,” the insider revealed. “They feel he has convinced her that this is a good idea because it will make them wealthier.”
Bianca’s relatives and friends are especially concerned, given West’s well-documented history with pornography. This previous issue was exposed during his high-profile marriage to Kim Kardashian, which he alleges was heavily influenced by his addiction. West has spoken openly about how reading his father’s Playboy magazine at the age of five served as a “gateway” to his addiction and played a significant role in his later fixation on adult entertainment. He even claimed that this addiction was one of the reasons for his divorce from Kardashian, saying that it “destroyed his family.”
Alexandra, Bianca’s mother, previously came from Australia to the United States in March in an attempt to “save” her daughter from what she perceived to be a possibly dangerous influence. Alexandra’s trip apparently managed to alleviate her anxieties about Bianca’s relationship with West, and she returned home relieved about her daughter’s condition. However, the family’s concerns have returned as a result of recent developments that shed additional light on West’s objectives.
Milo Yiannopoulos, Chief of Staff for Kanye West’s Yeezy brand, quit because he could not be “complicit in the production and dissemination of pornographic films and literature for moral and religious reasons.” Yiannopoulos’ departure has heightened Bianca’s family and friends’ concerns, implying that West’s journey into the adult film industry may be more than just a passing interest.
“Milo’s resignation has really opened our eyes to what might be going on behind the scenes,” the insider explained. “If someone like Milo, who has been known to tolerate a lot, finds it too morally reprehensible to stay, it makes us seriously question Kanye’s plans and how Bianca fits into all of this.”
Bianca’s family and friends are reportedly asking her to reconsider her engagement with West, believing she would be led into surrendering her beliefs for financial gain. They are concerned that West’s persuasive power may take Bianca down a path that is not only damaging to her personal integrity but may also be detrimental to her future.
“Kanye is very convincing, and he can make anything sound like a good idea,” the source added. “But Bianca’s loved ones are worried that she’s being taken advantage of and that she’s losing sight of her own principles and goals.”
For years, the public has debated West’s relationship with pornography. He has publicly discussed his challenges and how they have affected his personal and professional life. With his new venture, there are concerns that West is not only failing to confront his prior difficulties but also dragging others, such as Bianca, into a world that many regard as troublesome and morally questionable.

If you were around in the late 1990s and early 2000s, you’d remember reading about all the celeb-packed parties Diddy gave in the Hamptons and Miami. A beloved Hip-hop circus master, Diddy’s sparkling life and famous friends kept people reading lifestyle sections of newspapers, magazines and the tabloids.
‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Star Sonequa Martin-Green on the fifth season & On Being the Franchise’s First Black Female Captain and Lead
His reign continued on through the years, portrayed perfectly in a 2016 photograph where Diddy is surrounded by the likes of Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Swizz Beatz, Kanye, Kim Kardashian and girlfriend Cassie Ventura at the MTV Video Awards After party.
Only now do we realize the photo was taken only five months after Diddy was caught on video assaulting Cassie in an LA hotel that year. But all we see in the photograph is a star-studded crew, with Diddy as the life of the party.
However, aside from the highlife we associate the rapper with, we’ve all heard of the dark rumors surrounding the mogul.
People on social media have started wondering who released the video? Some say Diddy himself could have leaked it, others suggest it was Ventura’s lawyer and still others claim it had to be the government who might have found the video when they raided Diddy’s homes in March.
TikToker artymusa wondered “Why release the tape now? What is the motivation?” He further says CNN never mentioned who gave them the tape and then he suggests the tape was likely released by someone who had clients with lawsuits filed against Diddy.
The video would ruin Diddy’s reputation prior to trial, artsymusa theorizes, which would make whipping Diddy in court a mere “walk in the park.” He also suggests it is unlikely Cassie or her lawyers leaked the video because there surely had to be a written agreement stipulating she could not do that, and by doing so, Ventura would be sued by Diddy.
Regardless of the tiktokers intentions, commenters came for him. “Wrong Question,’’ said one person. “Maybe it’s time for us to cancel you,’’ said another.
Truth be told, nobody should give a rip about who leaked the video. The question really should not be why now, but why did it take so damn long?
Before all the lawsuits, many people once in Diddy’s orbit, both men and women, have been hinting about the violence and sexual misdeeds surrounding Diddy. But only now are we reading about these alleged misdeeds in legal documents.
When Ventura’s lawsuit dropped, no one was really shocked, though there were still Diddy apologists, who questioned where was the evidence? Sadly, someone had the horrendous video all the time. So why did it take so long to release it.
The 2016 incident was described in Ventura’s 2023 lawsuit: Combs, the lawsuit claimed, became “extremely intoxicated and punched Ms. Ventura in the face, giving her a black eye.” According to the suit, after Combs fell asleep, Cassie attempted to leave the hotel room, but he woke up and followed her into the hallway screaming. “He grabbed at her, and then took glass vases in the hallway and threw them at her, causing glass to crash around them as she ran to the elevator to escape.”
Ventura eventually escaped to the hotel lobby, flagged a cab and traveled to her apartment. After she got home, she began to worry Diddy was going to be angry that she left. She returned to the hotel to apologize to him but hotel staff, she has said, told her they saw the video and she should leave for her own safety. Ventura has since claimed Diddy paid the hotel $50,000 for the tape. Many theorists believe he kept it in his house, but it was eventually taken by homeland security when they raided his home.
In a recent instagram post, 50 Cent said ‘This is why they put that tape out, they know they can’t charge him with what we saw, but they know we can’t un see what we saw.”
That is a good theory, but Diddy had already been sued by Ventura and knew the video was important part of the of Ventura’s claims. Why would he keep it in one of his homes? Arrogance?
With allegations of Sex Trafficking, did he not suspect Homeland Security would come slamming through his door?
The bigger question is: why would the federal government leak a video like this? According to the theories out there, the government would leak the video as warning to Diddy that there’s more on him and he should cooperate and give up big names involved in other criminal activities.
We won’t know the truth anytime soon. What we do know, however is eight years passed without the public ever seeing the video. And now we find out the District Attorney’s office will not be able to charge Diddy because the statute of limitations have passed.
A former CIA agent told People magazine that the speed with which Combs settled the lawsuit leveled against him by Ventura in November of 2023 as proof that the mogul knew more evidence was to come.
But the former agent also claimed “Diddy never expected the video to get out. It’s very upsetting that this has exceeded its statute of limitations. It does depend on what the charge could be, but it can range from one to three years. Felony assaults in California have a statute of limitations of three years,” said Tracy Walder, the former CIA and FBI special agent who spoke to People. “Since this stemmed from a 2016 incident, she wouldn’t be able to file assault or battery charges in Los Angeles. ’’
On May 17, the footage of a March 2016 surveillance video from the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles, was released by CNN . In the video, Combs is dressed in only a towel and is seen kicking and punching Ventura, as well as dragging her down a hallway.
Per CNN, who published the video exclusively, Ventura’s attorney—Douglas H. Wigdor, said: “The gut-wrenching video has only further confirmed the disturbing and predatory behavior of Mr. Combs. Words cannot express the courage and fortitude that Ms. Ventura has shown in coming forward to bring this to light.”
How will hip-hop fans reconcile the fact that one of the genres most beloved icons is quite likely an abuser? The questions will swirl around this situation for a while.
Arguably, no R&B singer-songwriter not named Beyoncé is having as banner a year as Alicia Keys. At February’s Grammy Awards, Keys walked away with a golden gramophone when a 20th-anniversary reissue of her 2003 sophomore album, “The Diary of Alicia Keys,” won Best Immersive Audio Album. Days later, the Brooklyn Museum opened “Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys,” giving the public access to a personal collection including work from Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gordon Parks and others. And last month, “Hell’s Kitchen” opened on Broadway: a coming-of-age love story inspired by Keys’ upbringing on the west side of midtown Manhattan during the 1990s.
An autobiographical jukebox musical with 13 Tony Award nominations (including Best Musical and Best Choreography), “Hell’s Kitchen” draws on over 20 Alicia Keys originals — e.g., “Fallin’,” “Girl on Fire,” “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” and more — to enhance a storyline about teenage Ali (played by Meleah Joi Moon) dealing with an overprotective mom (Tony-nominated Shoshana Bean) and the magnetic Knuck (Chris Lee), an aspiring drummer she’s fallen for. As a period piece full of Tommy Hilfiger, FUBU, Phat Farm and a conspicuous absence of smartphones, the play also comes complete with plenty of ’90s-style choreography, courtesy of “Hell’s Kitchen” choreographer Camille A. Brown.
“Hell’s Kitchen” fully lays down its narrative latticework in the first 15 minutes, written by Pulitzer finalist Kristoffer Diaz. Ali and her mom, Jersey, exhibit the push and pull inherent in many stories of single-parent households: smothering mothers or fathers vs. rebellious children. Knuck is introduced street-drumming on overturned plastic buckets with his crew, initially dismissive of Ali’s romantic overtures, given their age difference. (Holding down a public painting job and his own apartment, Knuck appears to be in his mid-20s to Ali’s 17.) Ali quickly cuts Jersey’s maternal apron strings by starting a semi-scandalous affair with a grown man while simultaneously embarking on piano lessons under the tutelage of an older pianist in her building, Miss Liza Jane (played by Kecia Lewis).
Ali’s first encounter with her classically trained mentor is set to Lewis’s captivating performance of “Kaleidoscope,” one of the few songs (including “The River” and “Seventeen”) originally composed by Alicia Keys for “Hell’s Kitchen.” The choreography of the scene shifts poignantly from the “In Living Color”/TLC-inspired ’90s movements of the rest of the play. As choreographer Brown explained to theGrio, “This is the first time Ali sees a reflection of herself or her possibilities. What sparks doesn’t necessarily have to be [expressed as dance from] the ’90s. That can just be solely on emotion. I was really homing in on my modern dance language. My movement taps into step, social dance, hip-hop, ballet, jazz and modern. That was an opportunity to show my movement language through modern dance.”
(Left to right) Director Michael Greif and Choreographer Camille A. Brown during the opening night curtain call for the new Alicia Keys Musical “Hell’s Kitchen” on Broadway at The Shubert Theatre on April 20, 2024 in New York City. (Photo by Bruce Glikas/WireImage)
Originally staged at the Public Theater last November, the Broadway production features an improved, tighter second act and better storyline pacing, making for a more cohesive play in alignment with the likes of the Tony-winning “MJ the Musical” and the bygone Tony nominee “Motown: The Musical.” Taking place during a golden age of hip-hop, it’s unfortunate that rap isn’t represented in “Hell’s Kitchen,” even with “Empire State of Mind,” originally featuring Jay-Z, included in the production.) Given the need to accommodate 24 Alicia Keys songs, the inclusion of any other music was a near impossibility. But even with the absence of Jigga, Biggie Smalls and the era’s other rap titans, the decade’s spirit comes through strong enough through the costuming and, importantly, the dance.
“We were all clear about it being from the ’90s,” said Brown. “But Alicia and the creative team really gave me the agency to reflect what the ’90s and the spirit of the ’90s through movement means to me.”
To paraphrase house music legend Marshall Jefferson’s late ’80s classic, move your body down to the Shubert Theater with a quickness — “Hell’s Kitchen” tickets are currently on sale through January 2025.
36-year-old Amanda Husk has been denied a life-saving partial liver transplant after doctors discovered she had been drinking while on the transplant waitlist, according to Daily Mail. Husk, who has struggled with alcoholism since her teenage years, had been on life support for the past three months due to liver failure and was in desperate need of an organ transplant.
Amanda’s partner, Allen, had offered to be her donor, as his blood type matched hers. However, the medical team at University Health Network in Ontario refused the transplant request, citing her “minimal abstinence outside of the hospital.” This decision has sparked controversy and criticism, particularly from those familiar with similar cases.
Debra Selkirk, whose husband Mark passed away in 2010 after being refused a liver transplant due to his alcoholism, voiced her disapproval. “In Nathan and Amanda’s case, you’re seeing someone being told, ‘You didn’t follow doctor’s orders, so we’re not going to help you. We’re going to let you die,’” she said.
Husk had committed to entering an addiction program upon receiving her new liver, but her relapse has left her with only weeks to live, according to her doctors. Despite the refusal, Allen remains determined to save Amanda’s life. “I’ll do whatever it takes to get her the help she needs, just like the medical profession should be doing here,” he stated.
Allen’s plan now involves trying to get Amanda to Europe, where a transplant might still be possible. However, the cost of the treatment, estimated at $300,000, and Amanda’s rapidly declining health pose significant challenges. “We were told last week that she has a couple of weeks left to live, maybe a month if she’s very lucky,” Allen revealed.
