O.J. Simpson’s estate agent plans to fight payout to ex-wife’s family

[ad_1]

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The executor of O.J. Simpson’s estate says he will work to prevent a payout of a $33.5 million judgment awarded by a California civil jury nearly three decades ago in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the families of Simpson’s ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

Simpson’s will was filed Friday in a Clark County court in Nevada, naming his longtime lawyer, Malcolm LaVergne, as the executor. The document shows Simpson’s property was placed into a trust that was created this year.

LaVergne told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the entirety of Simpson’s estate has not been tallied. Under Nevada law, an estate must go through the courts if its assets exceed $20,000.

Simpson died Wednesday without having paid the lion’s share of the civil judgment that was awarded in 1997 after jurors found him liable. With his assets set to go through the court probate process, the Goldman and Brown families could be in line to get paid a piece of whatever Simpson left behind.

LaVergne, who had represented Simpson since 2009, said he specifically didn’t want the Goldman family seeing any money from Simpson’s estate.

“It’s my hope that the Goldmans get zero, nothing,” he told the Review-Journal. “Them specifically. And I will do everything in my capacity as the executor or personal representative to try and ensure that they get nothing.”

LaVergne did not immediately return phone and email messages left by The Associated Press on Saturday.

Although the Brown and Goldman families have pushed for payment, LaVergne said there was never a court order forcing Simpson to pay the civil judgment. The attorney told the Review-Journal that his particular ire at the Goldman family stemmed in part from the events surrounding Simpson’s planned book, titled “If I Did It.” Goldman’s family won control of the manuscript and retitled the book “If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer.”

Simpson earned fame and fortune through football and show business, but his legacy was forever changed by the June 1994 knife slayings of his ex-wife and her friend in Los Angeles. He was acquitted of criminal charges in 1995 in a trial that mesmerized the public.

Goldman’s father Fred Goldman, the lead plaintiff, always said the issue was never the money, it was only about holding Simpson responsible. And he said in a statement Thursday that with Simpson’s death, “the hope for true accountability has ended.”

The Goldman and Brown families will be on at least equal footing with other creditors and will probably have an even stronger claim, as Simpson’s estate is settled under terms established by the trust created in January. The will lists his four children and notes that any beneficiary who seeks to challenge provisions of the will “shall receive, free of trust, one dollar ($1.00) and no more in lieu of any claimed interest in this will or its assets.”

Simpson said he lived only on his NFL and private pensions. Hundreds of valuable possessions had been seized as part of the jury award, and Simpson was forced to auction his Heisman Trophy, fetching $230,000.

Fatboy SSE Shares Explicit Images of Wife, Tiana Kimbrough, Sparking Backlash and Retaliation –

[ad_1]

The social media star Fatboy SSE and his wife Tiana Kimbrough have become entangled in a string of highly publicized and heated arguments, marking one of the most talked-about influencer’s dramas of the year.

The saga began last year when a video surfaced online, capturing a heated argument between Fatboy SSE and Tiana over a house key. In the footage, tensions escalate as Fatboy SSE appears to push Tiana and toss her phone to the ground, prompting her to repeatedly threaten to involve law enforcement if the situation doesn’t calm down.

Following the video’s viral spread, Tiana took to her own social media platform to address the incident, expressing shock and disappointment at Fatboy SSE’s behavior. She condemned his actions, labeling them as “bitch-ass” and asserting that his behavior lacked any semblance of authenticity or respect.

Despite the intense scrutiny and public outcry, Fatboy SSE seemingly faced no legal repercussions for his actions in the video.

Fast forward to 2024, and the drama between Fatboy SSE and Tiana has only escalated. This time, the feud took a particularly explicit turn when Fatboy SSE shared graphic images of Tiana on his Instagram account. In response, Tiana retaliated by posting a video of Fatboy SSE provocatively complimenting her.

The back-and-forth exchanges between the couple have sparked widespread debate and condemnation on social media, with many expressing concerns over the toxicity of their relationship and the impact of their actions on their followers.

As the controversy continues to unfold, fans and followers are left to wonder what the future holds for Fatboy SSE and Tiana Kimbrough. Will they be able to reconcile their differences and move past this turbulent chapter, or will their ongoing feuds only further tarnish their reputations in the public eye? Only time will tell.

CBS daytime show ‘The Talk’ to end a 15-season run in December

[ad_1]

“The Talk” is ending its long-running daytime conversation.

The CBS talk show will end in December after 15 seasons, the network announced Friday.

“The Talk” was created by actor Sara Gilbert with the idea of a group of female hosts speaking about hot topics and current events, much like ABC’s “The View.” Gilbert said in a 2011 interview with The Associated Press that it was based on her actual group of “mom friends” who would gather to chat. She liked the idea of “a motley crew you would never really put together, but then suddenly there’s all this commonality.”

The show debuted in 2010 with hosts Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Julie Chen, Leah Remini and Holly Robinson Peete. Marissa Jaret Winokur was enlisted as a roving reporter who would be in the field. A hosting shake-up occurred after the first season. Winokur’s position was axed, and Peete and Robinson were replaced by Sheryl Underwood and Aisha Tyler.

“The Talk” would go on to have a number of hosting changes over its run. In 2018, Chen left the show after her husband, then-CBS Corp. boss Les Moonves was fired due to sexual misconduct allegations. Gilbert left her on camera post in 2019 but remains an executive producer. Osbourne’s departure in 2021 made headlines following a heated on-air discussion about racism between Osbourne and Underwood.

Underwood is the only person from the early days of “The Talk” who remains on the show today. She sits alongside Natalie Morales, Amanda Kloots, Jerry O’Connell and Akbar Gbajabiamila.

In a joint statement released by CBS, Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment and David Stapf who is president of CBS Studios said: “It goes without saying that hosting and producing a year-round talk show is no easy task.” They went on to express “sincere gratitude” to the hosts, producers and crew and recognized “former show hosts and colleagues who contributed throughout the seasons.”

The 11-time Daytime Emmy winner is airing its 14th season, which will end in June. Its final 15th season will premiere in the fall.

Brandy Norwood on Being the Vocal Bible, Descendants, Cinderella

[ad_1]

Image for article titled Brandy Norwood Dishes On Being Called That Name and Lots More

Photo: Will Sikora

Singer and actress Brandy Norwood is finally dishing on her feelings about being regarded as the “vocal bible” in the music industry.

Speaking exclusively to The Root at an event on Thursday celebrating the fourth collaboration between the talented artist and Stella Rosa for their premium imported brandy line and specifically their soon-to-be released Butter Toffee flavor, Norwood revealed that while she was initially hesitant to accept the label, she’s ultimately flattered and grateful for the recognition.

‘When I first heard it, it was hard for me to embrace it. I was like ‘wait a minute, there’s so many amazing singers.’ But I realized that that’s such flattery, it makes me feel so good that people acknowledge my gift in that way and it just keeps me on my toes to keep striving for greatness,” she explained.

A part of that greatness also entails joining forces with other music greats for some sonically superb sounds. When asked which artists she’d love to team up with, the “Borderline” singer shared that her dream collabs would be with Sade and D’Angelo.

And while those may still be a work in progress, Norwood is biding her time by making her grand reappearance as Cinderella in the forthcoming Disney+ original film, “Descendants: The Rise of Red.” In 1997, she made history as the first Black woman to portray the iconic princess in “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella,” starring alongside the late Whitney Houston who played her Fairy Godmother. Reflecting on what it means to be able to introduce a whole new generation to the her iteration of the character, Norwood shared:

“It’s the power of longevity and I’m just so blessed to have passion and love for what I do. And I’ve been able to do it for so long so to continue to be an inspiration to the world—it’s why you do what you do. It’s why I even started singing to begin with. I’m really blessed.”

Trooper admits to dropping knee on cuffed 15-year-old’s neck, breaking his eye socket over doorbell prank

[ad_1]

DOVER, Del. (AP) — A suspended Delaware state trooper is facing prison time after pleading guilty to criminal charges involving a brutal assault on a teenager who targeted the trooper’s house in a prank.

Dempsey Walters, 30, pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree assault and deprivation of civil rights, both felonies, authorities said. He also pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor assault and two counts of official misconduct. Prosecutors plan to recommend that Walters be sentenced to 1½ years in prison.

“We do not recommend prison sentences lightly, but there is no question that justice demands it here,” Attorney General Kathleen Jennings said in a prepared statement. “The defendant’s rampage against two kids, and his subsequent attempt to conceal his misconduct, was brutal, dishonest, and unacceptable.”

The case marked the first use of a state civil rights law that lawmakers passed unanimously in 2022.

Walters was indicted in September 2023 for assaulting a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old, whose eye socket was fractured. Authorities said Walters was off duty and returning to his home in Elsmere last August when he and the 17-year-old got into an argument. Walters contacted Elsmere police, who took the teenager to his home and turned him over to his mother. The following day, authorities said, Walters looked him up on Delaware’s state law enforcement database.

Three days later, Walters was on duty when the 15-year-old and three friends, who were walking past Walters’ home, decided to play a doorbell prank. The teen ran up to Walters’ house and kicked the door before running off. In home security camera footage, the teen’s face appears to be covered. Walters’ girlfriend called him and gave him a description of the teen. Walters drove to the neighborhood and called other troopers and police departments for help.

While searching for the person who came to his doorstep, Walters was told by a witness that several juveniles had just run down the street where the 17-year-old lived. Walters drove to the area, looked up the 17-year-old again on the state database, and went to his house with two Newport police officers.

When the officers arrived at the teen’s house, he and a friend came to the front door. Walters grabbed the 17-year-old and forced him to the ground, injuring him, authorities said. The teen, who was not part of the group that played the doorbell prank, was handcuffed and detained but never formally arrested during the encounter, which was captured on Newport police body cameras and Walters’ body camera.

Walters then heard that the group involved in ringing his doorbell had been found and detained. When he arrived at their location, the 15-year-old was face-down on the ground with a trooper attempting to handcuff him. Almost immediately upon arriving, according to investigators, Walters dropped his knee onto the back of the teen’s head and neck area, which can be seen on a police vehicle camera and Walters’ body camera.

As the 15-year-old was arrested and put in a police vehicle, Walters confirmed with another trooper that the person in custody was the same person who had kicked his door. He then turned off his body camera and walked to the police vehicle. While the teen was handcuffed in the back of the vehicle, Walters punched him in the face, fracturing his right eye socket. Walters then walked around the vehicle and turned his body camera back on.

It looks like rapper Ice Spice is not just “in ha mood”—she’s about to be in her acting bag soon, too!

Per Variety, the “Princess Diana” rapper is set to star in the upcoming new film “High & Low,” directed by Spike Lee and starring Denzel Washington. Though her specific role is unknown, she’s currently filming as production has already began on the forthcoming feature.

As previously reported by The Root, “High & Low” will be an English language adaptation of the 1963 Akira Kurosawa crime film of the same name. Lee has been vocal about his admiration for Kurosawa and credited him as an inspiration for having a long-lasting career. In his film version, “High & Low” centers around a businessman’s ruin following a ransom payment to kidnappers. It’s adapted from the Ed McBain novel “King’s Ransom.”

This trend of rappers expanding their talents and interest into the world of acting is nothing new. Megan Thee Stallion also had her first film role in “Dicks: The Musical” back in September 2023.

Based on an original stage musical from Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp (who star as the main protagonists in the film), the film follows two self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents. Meg appeared as their stellar-suited boss who kicks ass and takes names — which is hella on-brand and par for the course for the self-ascribed Hot Girl Coach.

Now it looks like Ice Spice will get her chance to show off her acting chops with some heavy hitters behind her. Who knows where this new door could take her? But with folks like Spike and Denzel, I have no doubt it’ll lead to something positive.
