Joseph Clarence Cox, a dentist in the US, has been sentenced to 180 years in prison for a string of heinous sexual offenses against eight former staff members and three patients from his dental office.
The arrest of Cox, 44, came in April 2021 following a thorough investigation by the Gadsden Police Department. Revelations during the investigation exposed disturbing evidence of sexual misconduct perpetrated by Cox against his staff members.
Throughout the trial, which lasted a week, a total of eight former employees and three patients bravely testified to a series of harrowing incidents, including rape, sodomy, and sexual abuse, occurring during dental procedures. According to ABC, the jury found Cox guilty of two counts of rape, two counts of sodomy, and eight counts of sexual abuse in January.
During sentencing, Judge George Day did not mince words, describing Cox as treating his dental clinic as his “own personal playground” and displaying utter disrespect for the women who crossed his path.
In a move to ensure justice for the victims, Judge Day ordered Cox to serve 25 years in prison for each count of rape and sodomy and 10 years for each count of sexual abuse, with the sentences to run consecutively.
Cox’s arrest was prompted by a significant turnover of employees at his Gadsden Dental Clinic between June 2020 and April 2021, leading officers to execute search warrants at both his residence and clinic on Rainbow Drive, where he was apprehended a week later.
Despite initially being released on a $100,000 bond, Cox’s former employees recounted a pattern of sexual abuse that contributed to the high turnover at the clinic. Testimony revealed that Cox’s misconduct extended beyond inappropriate touching to include rape and sodomy, with some incidents occurring during regular business hours.
Furthermore, two patients testified that they were subjected to sexual contact during their dental procedures. This disturbing pattern of behavior by Cox was not isolated to his time in Gadsden. Before opening his dental practice, Cox faced complaints of sexual harassment and unwanted contact.
In 2012, a former employee at his Fort Payne office accused him of misconduct. Cox ultimately pleaded guilty to three counts of harassment, resulting in a $500 fine, probation, and a six-month suspension of his dental license.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Day emphasized the need for justice for each victim, underscoring the severity of Cox’s offenses and the importance of holding him accountable for his actions.
In an effort to highlight the people who are leading colleges and universities across the nation, we at Watch The Yard reached out to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and did an interview with Andre Hamelberg the 2023-2024 Undergraduate Association president.
The position of SGA president is a highly respected role and there is a special pride that one takes in being elected by their peers to lead. Hamelberg, who is majoring in Chemical Engineering and Mathematics, is from Atlanta.
We interviewed Andre Hamelberg, and talked to him about his position, goals, future and what it means to hold this type of leadership position in 2023-2024.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far?
I have learned many things during my time as President of MIT’s Undergraduate Association. The biggest is definitely the importance of being reliable and the ability to navigate institutional processes and communicate with various stakeholders, whether that be students, faculty, administration, corporation members, alumni, or external partners.
What made you decide to attend MIT for undergrad?
Growing up, I always was highly interested in STEM. I did everything I could to continuously advance my math, science, and engineering knowledge. One of those things was competing in math team and science olympiad competitions. While preparing with my team for competition, we would watch MIT OpenCourseWare videos and read MIT lecture notes. This is where my aspiration and dream to one day study at MIT stemmed from. Years later, my older brother, Julian Hamelberg, was accepted and began attending the Institute. At that point, I was determined to join him and live out my college experience with my brother. Luckily, I was granted that opportunity, and since then I have done all in my power to take full advantage of this opportunity.

How has MIT molded you into the person you are today?
MIT has truly changed my perspective on life. I have learned of many valuable and important topics that are vital to our future such as areas within sustainability that I now hold of utmost importance in my daily life. Additionally, I have met the most brilliant minds and made unforgettable, lifelong friendships which I will take with me forever. People always say MIT teaches you how to solve problems. That skill can be applied to any situation and is what we take pride in having the ability to do. Now, on my way to graduation, I am more prepared than ever to tackle any challenge in my path.
What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning) and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?
During my Vice President, Michael Hanson, and I’s campaign, we ran on the slogan to Bring Back MIT. The pandemic and recent events at the Institute have caused many significant changes to the MIT community leaving behind many traditions and values that are core to the MIT experience. With that in mind, we have worked tirelessly to lead initiatives in the realm of food security working to ensure all students have access to affordable, proper nutrition. We also are working to increase student body engagement with more campus activities and joyous events to improve student life. This semester we are prioritizing improving campus transportation and establishing more in depth, straightforward documentation and processes for the transition process for new incoming officers and chairs of our Undergraduate Association to make certain the progress we made can be continued and built upon into the future.
How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?
Our Undergraduate Association has a Student Support and Wellbeing Committee that attends to the mental health of students. I can not give them enough credit for all the work they have done to uplift our MIT community. Just to name a couple things that they are currently working on, the committee is planning a large Wellbeing Fair event for all undergrads that will provide students access to all the available student support services at MIT in one location. Additionally, they are working on collaborating with MIT’s Violence Prevention & Response team to plan events for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
What does leadership mean to you?
To me, leadership is a dynamic blend of effective communication, delegation, and relationship-building. As a leader, I prioritize clear and open communication, ensuring that everyone on the team understands our goals, their roles, and the bigger picture. I believe in fostering an environment where team members feel comfortable expressing their ideas and concerns.

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2023/2024?
In 2024, I believe schools need strong social media presences and to continuously highlight their students, faculty, administration, and staff that work so hard each and every day to keep the school thriving. It is very important to keep an accurate online representation and reflection of your brand in this day and age not only for individuals but also for schools and institutions.
Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?
Watch The Yard serves as a platform that enables Black students to witness the remarkable achievements of individuals with similar backgrounds, fostering empowerment for the next generation of leaders, builders, and doers. Archival efforts to preserve Black legacies, and celebratory recognition of their significant contributions, Watch The Yard contributes to a narrative that inspires and uplifts the Black community empowering people like myself to continue pushing the boundaries and opening doors for others to do the same.
What do you plan on doing after graduation?
Following graduation, I will be interning in Manaus, Brazil at Tutiplast, a plastic manufacturing company, while immersing myself into their culture and taking courses to improve my Portuguese. Then, at the conclusion of the summer, I will begin my full-time job working as a Quantitative Research Analyst at BlackRock in New York City!

Tia Mowry has discovered parts of post-divorce healing that aren’t “often discussed.”
A year after her divorce from actor Cory Hardrict was finalized, the actress-entrepreneur opened up about what recovery looks like for her and invited others to share their stories in a recent video posted to Instagram.
“As women, we take our power back by sharing our stories and bringing any deep shame we hold from this experience into the light,” she said.
The video features a montage of photos and videos of Mowry throughout the past year with her children, at photo shoots, and living life with a voiceover candidly narrating how the healing process has been.
“Recovering from a divorce feels like a whirlwind journey,” she began as the video opened with a shot of her reflecting while journaling in bed. “I found that through the process, divorce isn’t a place where we arrive. It’s entering a new chapter of life with many nuances, and no one-size-fits-all handbook.”
She continued by noting the ups and downs and “waves of emotions” that ebb and flow.
“It’s a side of divorce that isn’t often discussed, especially when there are kids involved,” she said.
The video montage features several shots of the mother of two bonding with her children, daughter Cairo, 5, and son, Cree, 12, whom she shares with Hardrict.
“You strive to be a role model, teaching them resilience and self-care,” she added. “You try different things to soothe and release emotional build-up with exercise, journaling your thoughts, meditation, and seeking therapy to cope with the breakup and the dreams you had for the future.”
The “Sister Sister” alum said ultimately, she has found the old cliché of “time heals all wounds” to be true.
“I have always been honest with my fans, and today is no different. I wanted to share that Cory and I have decided to go our separate ways,” the “The Game” star captioned a black-and-white picture of her and Hardrict on Instagram.
She noted in the post’s caption, “Just because the dating life is complicated doesn’t mean I’m going to go back to something that no longer served me.”
The recent video update found Mowry looking to the future, adding that she hopes she’ll be able to look back on this time with “nothing but warmth and gratitude for the beautiful children brought into my life and a stronger version of myself that emerged from the experience.”
She concluded by inviting others going through divorce to share their experiences, “because there’s power in dialogue.”
In a recent episode of his show Brilliant Idiots alongside co-host Andrew Schulz, controversial media personality Charlamagne Tha God commented on the sadness that he felt over Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legacy being ruined in the face of never-ending legal troubles.

Currently, Combs is facing multiple lawsuits alleging rape, sex trafficking and sexual abuse. Last week, his properties in Los Angeles and Miami were raided by Homeland Security agents. The raids presumably stemmed from the suits. “This is a f**king raid,” Charlamagne stated while watching footage of agents descending onto Combs’ home.
“I don’t know, man, I just don’t like it. I don’t like it because it’s sad. How many peoples’ legacies have we watched burn to the ground? From Russell Simmons, Diddy…” When Schulz pushed back, Charlamagne remained steadfast in his observations.
“It’s just one emotion? Y’all all lying to yourselves if you say, ‘Yeah good for them, f**k them!’ These guys f**king provided the soundtrack to our lives. They contributed to the culture in real ways before we knew any of this sh*t […] You have feelings, you have mixed emotions.”
He is not the only famous Black male celebrity to show sympathy to Combs, though does the star deserve any of it? 2 Live Crew rapper Luther Campbell recently spouted a conspiracy theory about how the troubling allegations against Combs is somehow due to the Bad Boy mogul’s legal dispute with liquor brand Diageo.
In a now-deleted Instagram post following the raids, Tyrese expressed continued reverence for Combs: “What I can’t do and what I won’t do is downplay the laughter, the fun, the energy, the inspiration, the awards shows, the studio sessions, the most legendary parties and events I’ve ever attended in my life,” the “Sweet Lady” crooner wrote.
Nick Cannon refused to address Combs’ situation in a resurfaced interview because he finds “difficulty” in discussing people he personally knows. When asked about Combs’ downfall by Piers Morgan last month, Ja Rule stated: “It’s another Black man in this industry going through some unfortunate circumstances…I wish him luck with everything he’s going through.”
The allegations have yet to be corroborated or substantiated in a court of law. However, Combs has a well documented history of violence whether it was his 1998 attack against music executive Steve Stoute (he was sentenced to one-day of anger management as a result), his involvement in the infamous 1999 shooting at Club New York or swinging a kettle bell at then-UCLA assistant football coach Sal Alosi in 2015.
Those incidents were seemingly overlooked by the entertainment industry and music fans alike, as Combs was celebrated. Unfortunately for the rapper, the crimes he is now being accused of are just too harrowing to ignore. In 2019, his ex-girlfriend Gina Huynh claimed he savagely beat her and stated that “everyone” around Combs “allowed” the abuse to continue.
The November 2023 federal lawsuit from ex Casandra “Cassie” Ventura proved devastating for Combs, as Ventura detailed how he allegedly raped her in 2018, beat her and made her have sex with male escorts while he watched. The lawsuit also alleged that Combs blew up Kid Cudi’s car to stop him from dating Cassie; Cudi’s rep confirmed that the allegations were true.
Following Ventura’s bombshell suit, three Jane Does came forward to sue him for sexual assault and rape. On Feb. 27, Combs was sued by producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones for $30 million for sexual assault. The 70-page document—which was later amended with an additional 25 pages—outlined how Combs allegedly groped his “anus and crotch without consent” and attempted to “groom him into accepting a homosexual relationship.”
Protecting Combs’ legacy should honestly be the last thing on anyone’s mind. It took strength and courage for his accusers to come forward, as Combs has apparently been above the law and adored in the entertainment industry. These accusations goes beyond a Black man experiencing “unfortunate circumstances”—the man is a monster.
Hopefully, the people Combs has allegedly harmed will receive justice that is long overdue.
Angel Reese, fondly known as the “Bayou Barbie,” has made a momentous revelation by revealing her intention to enter the WNBA draft. The LSU power forward, known for her outstanding ability on the court, revealed her career decision in an exclusive interview and photo shoot with Vogue Magazine on April 3rd.
Reese highlighted her desire to build a name for herself in the professional basketball world, displaying her trademark flare and confidence. “Of course, I like to do everything big,” she remarked, reflecting on her decision to pursue her dreams at the highest level. “I didn’t want anything to be basic.”Reese, who has received multiple awards during her undergraduate career, including assisting the LSU Tigers in securing their first national title in 2023, is prepared for the difficulties ahead. “My ultimate goal is to be a pro — and to be one of the greatest basketball players to play, ever,” she declared with determination.

During her Vogue photo shoot, Reese radiated confidence and style, captivating viewers with her striking presence. Assisted by Vogue editor Naomi Elizee, Reese effortlessly blended athleticism with fashion, donning custom basketball jerseys and vibrant ensembles that showcased her multifaceted talent.
Reese, who is from Maryland, has excelled not only on the court but also in the arena of marketing collaborations, earning over $1.3 million in non-exclusive deals with prestigious brands such as Coach, Amazon, and Mercedes-Benz.
As the WNBA draft approaches, Reese remains undeterred by the possibility of starting over. “I want to start at the bottom again,” she shared. “I want to be a rookie again and build myself back up; I want to be knocked down and learn and grow at the next level.”

The chapters of both Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Alpha Phi International Women’s Sorority at Washington University in St. Louis have been temporarily suspended pending the results of a student conduct investigation after an incident that the school’s Association of Black Students(ABS) is calling a hate crime.
According to a report by Student Life, the independent newspaper of WashU, Dean of Students Rob Wild stated that the incident involved students throwing throwing eggs and potentially saying racial slurs at Bear’s Den (BD) dining hall, March 21st. The Association of Black Students(ABS) says that dining workers were targets of the eggings and that students obnoxiously danced on tables, making loud noises, and even using racial slurs.
The report by Student Life states that an investigation was opened by the Washington University Police Department (WUPD) surrounding the incident on March 22, before it was turned over to the Office of Student Conduct on March 26. Both chapters of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Alpha Phi Sorority received suspensions on March 27.
On April 2nd, the Association of Black Students(ABS) at the university issued a statement via their social media channels stating that, “The event that occurred on March 21st was not just an isolated disturbance, or a simple ‘egg hunt,’ but a hate crime.”
The ABS also urged the Student Conduct Team to hold all individuals accountable to the fullest extent and asked that the chapters involved not only be suspended but terminated from the university’s campus and all individuals involved be not only suspended but expelled from the institution.

Other Black organizations have also spoken out including the Alpha Eta chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. who also called for the immediate termination of the students and organizations involved in a statement that they released on social media.

This is a fictional letter to a fictional white person, but it’s a letter I expect to have to send for real at some point. It’s almost wedding season, and y’all know how white people be sometimes.
Dear Becky,
I wanted you to hear directly from me why I will not be attending your wedding. It’s because you chose a plantation in Alabama for your venue. I can’t believe that after all the conversations we’ve had in the group chat, you are still comfortable getting married in a space known for being a site of historic trauma for African-American people. I’m disturbed that lots of white people are having weddings at plantation sites but you’re the one who invited me so this middle finger is for you.
I know you think “slavery happened a long time ago” because you put those words in the group chat. I remember because when I read those words I projectile vomited onto my phone. It was definitely not so long ago that I have forgotten about the things that happened there. The beatings, the rapes, the killings. I couldn’t possibly exist on that site and not think about the horrors that happened to my ancestors there. I would see you coming down the aisle and I’d be wondering if I was standing on a spot where some enslaved person was murdered. It’s crazy to me that you’re able to go there and not think about that. But that’s what white privilege is all about — being able to ignore the reality of race whenever you want.
Becks, you booked the place knowing its history — you knew what was meant by the word plantation. I know you think “the physical beauty of the plantation will ensure it’s a beautiful day,” but how could the aesthetics of the land overshadow the fact that this is a place drenched in violence, dehumanization and white supremacy? You just chose to overlook all of that and hold your wedding there even after Josh said in the group chat: “Do you think it would be OK to get married at Auschwitz?”

Racism isn’t merely about what we say with our mouths, it’s also about what we do. You have said that your “family did not own slaves,” but can you not see how you are participating in the slave economy right now? Let me make it simple: You are giving money to people because they own a location that was a slave plantation. The value of any piece of land is not just in how it looks. It’s also about its history. But despite the traumatizing history of those acres — or perhaps because of that history — you paid the fee. That means you are now participating in the slave economy. You’re also trying to normalize a place that’s part of the history of slavery in America. That’s wild.
Bex, my mother said if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all so let me put it this way: Your ability to ignore the history of slavery is impressive. I admire the way you move through the world completely unburdened by the most evil part of American history. I respect the way you can erase history from your brain. Or, maybe I should say, I respect the way you have avoided learning about the history of slavery.
I will never get used to the way white people see the world. I cannot ignore what happened to my people and the many ways it continues to impact my community and our country. But you can ignore all of that. You can act like it never happened. Your whiteness has allowed you to shut out other people’s viewpoints. White privilege has hooked you up with a very convenient form of blindness. Must be nice.
I think language is part of the problem. The way people in this country talk about slavery is sanitizing. You’ve been shielded from how evil slave plantations are because of holes in your history classes and white amnesia. First off, stop calling it a plantation and call it a slave plantation. That would force you to confront reality. But more than that, I once read a post on Kottke that said instead of calling them slaves we should call them “hostages” and instead of slave owners we should call them “human traffickers” and instead of plantations we should call them “death camps.” When you inject those terms into the dialogue and throw out the sanitized language, then it’s a little harder to ignore reality.
If you think that is a space fit for a wedding, then that means you either don’t know what really happened there or you don’t care. Either way, this friendship is over. I can’t be friends with someone who would make this choice.
That said, I hope you will still accept my wedding gift. I bought you and Brad a set of iron shackles I found on Etsy. They will serve as a reminder of the graves you stood on top of on your wedding day.
B, while you’re getting married I’ll be at home watching “Django Unchained,” a movie where a formerly enslaved man takes a bullwhip and whips his former master. I love that scene. Anyway, I’ll be watching that and hoping that as you walk down the aisle, the ghosts of the enslaved float up out of the ground and yell boo and scare the white privilege out of you.

According to TMZ, Cassie is “among the witnesses the feds have been in contact with in connection with the investigation.” And it appears she may have been involved in the investigation for “several weeks,” and considering the timing, could’ve “helped the feds establish probable cause to get a judge to sign off on the search warrants” that led to the raids, TMZ reports.
As previously reported by The Root, in November 2023, the “Me & U” singer filed a lawsuit against Combs alleging he raped and abused her. She also accused Diddy of forcing her to have sex with other men in acts described as a “Freak Off.”
The lawsuit also detailed a shocking incident when Cassie sought refuge at Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi’s home. In response, Combs allegedly threatened to blow up Cudi’s car and make sure the rapper/actor and his friends witnessed it. Cudi’s car later exploded in his driveway. A spokesperson for Mescudi confirmed the incident to The New York Times.
Although Diddy immediately settled with Cassie, her accusations opened the flood gates for a wave of lawsuits against the Bad Boy founder, with multiple people alleging they too were sexually harassed and assaulted by Diddy.
In his suit, music producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones “claimed he recorded damning footage of Combs and his associates ‘engaging in serious illegal activity.’”
Obviously, there are no specifics on what Cassie told federal investigators, but she presumably discussed the allegations in her lawsuit and possibly provided details that haven’t been publicly revealed.
With so many lawsuits working through the system and a federal sex trafficking investigation in progress, Diddy’s reputation has arguably been changed forever, though there are still at least a few people speaking out in support of his character.
On April 12, the comedy film “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” hits theaters. Prepare for a summer filled with laughs and unexpected turns. From start to finish, audiences should be amused by this hilarious drama, directed by Wade Allain-Marcus and starring Nicole Richie and Simone Joy Jones.
The film revolves around seventeen-year-old Tanya Crandell, played by Simone Joy Jones, who has huge plans for the summer before attending Howard University. Tanya’s intentions are sidetracked when her mother, played by Ms. Pat, decides to attend a wellness retreat in Thailand, leaving Tanya to care for her three siblings. Things take a funny turn when the family’s elderly babysitter dies unexpectedly, forcing Tanya to take a job working for the confident and ambitious Rose (Nicole Richie). Balancing her job, family duties, and a confusing romance, Tanya finds herself propelled into adulthood earlier than intended, at the price of her much-anticipated summer vacation.
In anticipation of the film’s premiere, I spoke with Simone Joy Jones and Nicole Richie. During our interview, they revealed details about their roles and their experiences on-site. They also shared some amusing tidbits, such as who they would call to dispose of a body and how to create a phony resume.
