Noir Nation, the summer heat in NYC turned deadly this week when 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura opened fire inside a Midtown skyscraper near the NFL headquarters, killing four people before turning the gun on himself.
The chaos erupted Monday morning at 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise home to major companies including Blackstone and the NFL. Dressed in body armor and armed with a military-style rifle, Tamura—who traveled from Las Vegas—stormed the lobby and unleashed gunfire.
Among the victims:
🔸 Officer Didarul Islam, an off-duty NYPD cop and father-to-be
🔸 Aland Etienne, a beloved security guard
🔸 Julia Hyman, 27, a rising talent at Rudin Management
🔸 Wesley LePatner, top Blackstone exec
Tamura then shot himself on the 33rd floor.
🧠 WHAT MOTIVATED THE SHOOTING?
A suicide note was found in Tamura’s pocket referencing the NFL’s handling of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy)—a brain condition linked to football-related trauma. “They’ll squash you,” the note read, alleging the league covered up lasting damage from head injuries.
Tamura, a former high school athlete, asked that his brain be donated for study. Officials have confirmed his brain will undergo testing for CTE.
🕊️ NYC MOURNS
Funeral preparations are underway. Officer Islam’s GoFundMe has already raised over $250,000. Memorials for Hyman and LePatner are planned privately.
As of July 31, authorities say Tamura legally purchased the weapon in Nevada and had a documented mental health history.
🖤 Noir Nation, this is yet another call for action: mental health reform, gun reform, and protection for Black and Brown lives in all spaces—corporate or not. Keep your eyes open and your hearts guarded.
