Margot Robbie is going big. Literally.
The Barbie star is reportedly set to headline a new remake of Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, with none other than Tim Burton directing. Yes, you read that correctly: the director of Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands is teaming up with Robbie, the reigning queen of Hollywood, for a bold new reimagining of the 1958 sci-fi cult classic.
And social media has opinions.
“Margot Robbie as a 50 foot tall woman? Words can’t express how seated I am. These are the type of cinematic experiences I live for,” one user gushed.
“Wait…. Honestly this is perfect,” another wrote, echoing what seems to be a widespread feeling of chaotic anticipation.
But not everyone is sold.
“They straight up do not have any new ideas. And they REFUSE to hire new minds that actually have interesting and fresh ideas. So fuck ‘em, Hollywood hurry up and die!” raged one user, punctuating an increasingly familiar debate about the industry’s obsession with remakes.
Still, the news is exploding online like a B-movie alien invasion. And it’s not hard to see why.
A Post-Barbie Power Move
Margot Robbie hasn’t starred in a film since her billion-dollar phenomenon Barbie made her the undisputed box office empress of 2023. That movie not only cemented her as a global superstar, but positioned her as one of the most powerful producer-actors working today.
In October 2024, Robbie welcomed her first child and took a break from acting. Her highly anticipated return to the screen will come this September with A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, a philosophical road film directed by After Yang‘s Kogonada, where she stars opposite Colin Farrell and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Now, Robbie is going from road trip to sky-high, reportedly both starring in and producing Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. The project will be a bold fusion of 1950s pulp and Burton’s signature gothic surrealism. According to multiple industry insiders, the deal is being finalized with Warner Bros.
Tim Burton Is on a Hot Streak Again
If anyone knows how to bring the bizarre to life, it’s Tim Burton. The gothic auteur had a major comeback last year with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which pulled in over $450 million worldwide. That success, alongside his Netflix mega-hit Wednesday, has reestablished Burton as a Hollywood heavyweight with fresh relevance to Gen Z audiences.
Pairing Burton’s signature visuals with Robbie’s A-list magnetism is a calculated and potentially genius move.
A Cult Classic Reinvented… Again
The original Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, directed by Nathan H. Juran and released in 1958, was a low-budget sci-fi flick that became a drive-in staple. It starred Allison Hayes as Nancy Archer, a wealthy woman who is exposed to radiation from a UFO and grows to a monstrous size, eventually going on a rampage in search of her cheating husband. Yes, really.
The film was remade once before in 1993 as an HBO original movie starring Daryl Hannah and directed by This Is Spinal Tap’s Christopher Guest.
Now, a third iteration is coming and with Burton at the helm and Robbie towering over Hollywood, expectations are sky high.
Internet Goes Nuclear
Predictably, the internet has erupted in both delight and despair. The phrase “50 Foot Woman” has begun trending on X (formerly Twitter), and reactions range from thirst to existential meltdown:
“Dudes will see this and say hell yeah,” joked one user.
“This may be the greatest sentence in the history of wording,” another quipped.
Still, a vocal segment of the fandom is already fatigued by Hollywood’s obsession with intellectual property.
“Just can’t come up with new stuff…” read one viral post.
“I’d watch most things with Margot in it,” countered another.
Whether you think this is high art or cinematic recycling, one thing is certain: Margot Robbie as a skyscraper-sized woman in a Tim Burton fever dream is going to be a moment.
