Former ‘Married at First Sight’ bride Paige Banks celebrates new engagement

[ad_1]

Looks like “Married at First Sight” alum Paige Banks is finally getting her happily ever after. This week, in an interview with People magazine, the former reality television star announced her engagement to her partner, Justin Williams. Recounting the moment with the publication, Banks shared how Williams surprised her by leading her to believe they were doing a photo shoot in the location of their first date to celebrate their one-year anniversary on April 13.

“It was a nice 360 moment,” she said, sharing details on how Williams proposed. “He just was reflecting on the year we had together and how much he loved me and wanted to continue doing life with me. [He] said he got me a necklace for our one year, and once I opened it I saw the ring and was pleasantly surprised.”

Banks appeared on season 12 of Lifetime’s “Married at First Sight,” where viewers watched the tumultuous saga of her relationship with co-star Chris Williams unfold. Having since healed from the emotional rollercoaster of their unhealthy onscreen marriage, Banks says she and her now-fiancé Justin had been discussing marriage “for quite some time.”

In September 2023, the couple announced they were expecting their first child together. On Feb. 26, 2024, they welcomed a baby girl, Nova Rae.

“I saw the two lines come across the test and I was shocked, happy and anxious all at the same time,” she said, announcing her pregnancy, per People magazine. “I’ve always wanted to be a mother and embrace all of the beautiful possibilities that come with raising and nurturing a child of my own, and finally, I felt like God had answered the desires of my heart and gave me something that I had been yearning for.”

“I’m super grateful that I can share this journey with my person, my safe space, my confidante and most importantly, my best friend. Life isn’t always easy, but doing it with [Justin] makes things so worthwhile and I can’t wait to see [Justin] in action with our little love,” she added.

Accepting Williams’ proposal a little less than three months after bringing Nova home, Banks says the engagement “just solidified [their] relationship even more.”

“4.13.24 marks the beginning of forever,” Banks shared. “[I’m] excited to embark on this journey of love and partnership with my best friend. From our first date at the Ferris wheel to a year later with my forever mate. Here’s to a lifetime of laughter, adventures, and endless love.”

On April 20, the Omicron Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., at the University of Cincinnati witnessed a historic moment as identical triplet sisters Brianna, Brittany, and Brooke Jones were initiated into the sorority. Their induction not only adds to the chapter’s distinguished legacy but also continues a rich family tradition, making them a triple legacy.

The Jones sisters are following in the esteemed footsteps of their mother, Brandee Carson-Jones, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Their initiation into the sorority underscores a deep familial commitment to the values and mission of the first historically African American sorority, founded in 1908 at Howard University. Their father, Jeffrey Jones, a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., further cements their place within the “Phirst Pham” of the Divine Nine, a term that denotes families with members in both Alpha Kappa Alpha and Alpha Phi Alpha.

The triplets’ induction is not just a personal milestone but a reflection of a broader tradition of service, leadership, and community engagement that both their parents have championed. Their mother’s legacy within Alpha Kappa Alpha and their father’s association with Alpha Phi Alpha highlight a family deeply embedded in the principles and networks of the Divine Nine. This milestone marks a continuation of their parents’ commitment to fostering unity and excellence within their community.

Wait!? Jennifer Hudson Has How Many Siblings?

[ad_1]

Photo: Rodin Eckenroth (Getty Images)

Everyone has their own shade of family drama, but yours would be hard-pressed to compare to that of Jennifer Hudson. During a recent appearance on the “Your Mama’s Kitchen” podcast, the multi-hyphenate entertainer revealed a shocking family secret.

When she was a teenager, the EGOT winner found out that the father who wasn’t involved in her life had multiple children she didn’t know about. And by multiple, she means a lot.

“Apparently, he had 27 children,” Hudson said.

This would be way too much for most people to handle, but the “Spotlight” singer has a very specific idea for how she wants to spend time with her siblings: She wants a huge holiday get together with everyone

“It was my dream to have all of us at this grand Thanksgiving or Christmas table, and we all sit and eat together — that was my goal at 16,” she said.

Her father may not have been in her life, but it was her paternal relatives who put the siblings in tough with one another.

“When my grandma on his side passed, my siblings over there were like, ‘Y’all got a sister that can really sing, you should meet her, and eventually we all came together,” Hudson said.

So far, the “Respect” star has only met six or seven siblings that she didn’t previously know. As the mother of a young son, it makes sense that Hudson would want her child to know as many aunts and uncles as possible. But we all know it’s never that easy with family.

It’s admirable that Hudson is so open to having a big family gathering, but in situations like this, people aren’t always willing to open their emotional wounds. With 28 kids all harboring different feelings about their father, there are probably a few members of the family who don’t want to sit around the table and talk it out.

How Biden and Trump are taking very different approaches to preparing for next week’s debate

[ad_1]

NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden begins an intense period of private preparations Friday at Camp David for what may be the most consequential presidential debate in decades.

The 81-year-old Democrat’s team is aware he cannot afford an underwhelming performance when he faces Republican rival Donald Trump for 90 minutes on live television June 27. Biden’s team expects aggressive attacks on his physical and mental strength, his record on the economy and immigration and even his family.

Trump, 78 and ever confident, will stay on the campaign trail before going to his Florida estate next week for two days of private meetings as part of an informal prep process.

The ex-president’s allies are pushing him to stay focused on his governing plans but expect him to be tested by pointed questions about his unrelenting focus on election fraud, his role in the erosion of abortion rights and his unprecedented legal baggage.

The CNN debate will be full of firsts, with the potential to reshape the presidential race. Never before in the modern era have two presumptive nominees met on the debate stage so early in the general election season. Never before have two White House contenders faced off at such advanced ages, with widespread questions about their readiness.

And never before has a general election debate participant been saddled with a felony conviction. The debate stage meeting comes just two weeks before Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial.

“You can argue this will be the most important debate, at least in my lifetime,” said Democratic strategist Jim Messina, a 54-year-old who managed President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign.

Pressure on Biden

The ground rules for the June 27 debate, the first of two scheduled meetings, are unusual.

The candidates agreed to meet at a CNN studio in Atlanta with no audience. Each candidate’s microphone will be muted, except when it’s his turn to speak. No props or prewritten notes will be allowed onstage. The candidates will be given only a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water.

There will be no opening statements. A coin flip determined Biden would stand at the podium to the viewer’s right, while Trump would deliver the final closing statement.

The next debate won’t be until September. Any stumbles June 27 will be hard to erase or replace quickly.

Biden arrived at Camp David on Thursday night and is expected to hunker down with senior campaign aides until the debate. While traveling to the mountainside retreat, he gave a thumbs up to reporters when asked how debate prep was going.

The president’s aides have been reluctant to share details about his preparations, run by former chief of staff Ron Klain. But they’ve signaled he’s preparing to be aggressive and wouldn’t shy away from using the term “convicted felon” to describe his opponent.

One adviser not authorized to speak publicly about debate strategy noted Biden has been increasingly punchier in recent remarks about Trump and plans to carry that theme through to the debate. That’s still while trying to project himself as “the wise and steady leader” in contrast with Trump, the adviser said.

Among some political operatives, there’s the sense Biden may have more to lose given his struggle to generate momentum amid signs of weakness within his political coalition. Trump and his allies have set an extraordinarily low bar, however, by suggesting for months Biden is contending with serious physical limitations that make it difficult for him to stand for 90 minutes or string together two sentences.

Recommended Stories

“It’s like the mirror test. Put a mirror under Biden’s nose, and if it fogs it up, he wins, right? That’s about what the threshold is for Biden,” Republican strategist and Trump ally David Urban said with a laugh. “Can Biden demonstrate that he’s mentally nimble? That’s the big question.”

Yet Trump sought to shift expectations in a Thursday interview with the “The All-In Podcast” in which he veered sharply away from his typical Biden taunts. He said Biden “destroyed” vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan in their 2012 debate.

“I assume he’s going to be somebody that will be a worthy debater,” Trump said of Biden. “I don’t want to underestimate him.”

Biden’s aides have dismissed concerns about his age and mental readiness. They’re fighting against what they allege is deceptive editing of video clips to suggest he’s confused.

But while some Democrats project confidence, Biden’s allies also say he has spent much of the last two weeks traveling — in Europe and on the West Coast — limiting his ability to prepare. Others note incumbent presidents typically struggle in the season’s opening general election debate.

Messina made both points even as he sought to play up the political stakes for Trump. He suggested Trump was taking an unnecessary political risk by debating Biden, given Trump’s early advantage in many polls.

“I wouldn’t have done the debate if I was him,” Messina said of Trump. “If you’re tied or a little bit ahead of the incumbent, why would you want to give him this air? He decided he wanted to do this to knock him out, and if he doesn’t, then I think he’s in real trouble.”

Trump projecting confidence

Trump’s team sees the faceoff as an opportunity to demonstrate a clear contrast with Biden’s leadership ability and governing record.

And while downplaying his preparations, Trump aides have a pattern of insisting he doesn’t prepare for debates when, in fact, he does — in his own way. Instead of mock debates with lecterns and stand-ins or hours spent poring over policy books, the ex-president is expected to rely on a series of conversations about policy and strategy with aides and political allies.

Trump will also make public appearances over the coming days.

On Saturday, he’s set to host a rally in Philadelphia and deliver a keynote address to a conference of Christian conservatives in Washington. He also has a fundraiser in New Orleans on Monday before going to his Florida estate for meetings.

“Biden needs rehearsals with handlers to find some way to explain this mess he’s made of our nation,” Trump spokesman Brian Hughes said. “President Trump is always prepared to present to Americans his record of success and Biden’s weakness and failures.”

Biden’s camp is aware Trump will likely focus on his son Hunter, as the then-president did on the debate stage four years ago. Hunter Biden was recently convicted on three felony charges related to the purchase of a gun while allegedly being addicted to drugs. Republicans have also criticized Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings when Joe Biden was vice president.

Biden’s allies are also concerned, however, their famously combative rival might be on good behavior.

“For both campaigns, the goal here is reaching an audience of moderate, independent, swing voters in swing states who will, in many ways, be the deciding factor in this election,” said former Biden administration official Bill Russo.

“Trump has kind of a golden opportunity here. If he can pretend that he’s a reasonable human being for 90 minutes while he’s in the spotlight, he’s got a lot to gain,” Russo added. “The real key here is which Trump shows up.”

Arm Found on Illinois Shore Matched to Sade Robinson

[ad_1]

Updated as of 6/20/2024 at 4:00 p.m. ET

Last month, a dismembered arm washed up from Lake Michigan on the shore of Illinois. The Lake County, Michigan Coroner’s Office says the remains match the DNA of a Black girl whose body has been found in pieces since her disappearance.

Sade Robinson’s arm was found May 11 by someone walking along Waukegan Municipal Beach, the coroner’s office stated. The location is 50 miles from Milwaukee, where Robinson lived and was last seen. The office notified her family of the DNA test results Tuesday, per NBC.

“On behalf of the Lake County Coroner’s Office, I want to express our sincere condolences to Sade’s family and friends who continue to endure this tragic loss,” Coroner Jennifer Banek said in a statement, via NBC.

In response to the findings, family attorney Verona Swanigan said Robinson’s mother, Sheena Scarbrough, feels like “her heart is being cut out” after every update in the investigation into her daughter’s murder.

This latest development in the case led Scarbrough to take matters into her own hands, demanding more information as to how her daughter was found in pieces along the shores of Lake Michigan.

Last month, Scarbrough’s attorney informed FOX6 News she filed requests to the authorities to formally demand the truth of what happened to 19-year-old Sade Robinson. Specifically, they’re seeking answers to whether an arm that washed up on the Waukegan, Ill. side of Lake Michigan belongs to Robinson.

Robinson’s family told reporters authorities notified them last week of the floating remains. They won’t know for sure if the arm belongs to Robinson until DNA tests are conducted. However, the attorney criticized the police investigation, saying the discovery of a body part potentially belonging to Robinson in a completely different state was “entirely too much,” the report says.

Also, 6th Ward Alderman Keith Turner was slammed for allegedly posting a picture of the severed arm on his Facebook page. Scarbrough previously made a statement saying she wanted him to be held accountable or reprimanded.

She wasn’t the only one demanding accountability.

Read Mayor Ann Taylor’s response via FOX6:

“Alderman Keith Turner at no time contacted the Waukegan Police command staff or anyone within Waukegan City government to ask about this incident before posting the photo of the remains on Facebook. The City did not provide Ald. Turner with the photograph, and he was never given permission to post the photo on his Facebook page. Individual Aldermen are not authorized to speak on behalf of the City, much less for the Police Department. On behalf of the City of Waukegan, I find the posting of an image of this type to be morally disgusting, socially irresponsible, and extremely cruel to the victim’s family. I hope all Waukeganites join me in prayer for the victim of this horrific crime and for the victim’s family.”

Previously, authorities confirmed that the other remains found on the Milwaukee side of Lake Michigan were indeed that of Robinson’s.

The man she was last seen with, 33-year-old Maxwell Anderson, was arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse and arson, per FOX 32 Chicago.

“Anderson needs to confess, and his parents need to come out of the shadows and get him to stand up for the truth. I want my daughter’s remains! Sade should not have to spend eternity lost because of Anderson’s evil agenda,” wrote attorney Swanigan on behalf of Robinson’s mother per a statement.

Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Pop Out’ delivered another knockout

[ad_1]

Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Read more opinions on theGrio.

Sometimes, as I tweeted last night, you really do have to pop out and show people. That’s what Kendrick did last night with an epic show. Someone on TikTok said “Kendrick is Juneteenth and Drake is the Fourth of July,” and after last night’s Kendrick concert The Pop Out, that checks out. Kendrick is Black culture while Drake is a huge crossover celebration. But, before we go any further, we need to come together on a name for this historic show that the culture watched as one, talking on Black Twitter and texts about how this show was giving us life.

@shanellegenai on Twitter suggested we could call it “Gangchella” or “Gangteenth” because of how Kendrick brought together the Bloods and the Crips and the Pirus of L.A. at the end of the show. (She also suggested “Goonteenth,” “The Gangerie,” “The Blood Bonvention,” and “Niggapalooza.”) The gang unity aspect was both heartwarming and wild. To see red and blue dancing onstage together and taking a photo together showed Kendrick’s cultural power — his ability to unite warring people is unmatched in modern hip-hop. @michaelharriot tweeted: “Gangbangers frolicking was not on my Juneteenth bingo card.” @actatumonline tweeted: “It’s dudes with 14 bodies on that stage dancing care free.” They were onstage together at the end in peace. @righttimeBomani said Kendrick deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for that. I tweeted “Not Like Us” is so hot it united Crips and Bloods.

But no this will not go down as “Gangchella.” Many suggested we call it “Hatechella.” @mikebeauvais tweeted: “This is like “We Are the World but for hating a guy.” Kendrick ran through all his battle records, starting with “Euphoria,” sliding into “6:16 In LA” and “Like That” and then ending with “Not Like Us” which he did five or six times in a row. I lost count in all of the, um, euphoria. You know you’ve got an iconic monster smash when you can do a song five or six times and everyone’s wants to hear it again. @kevonstage tweeted: “Kendrick playing this song over and over like I do in my car.” @basseyworld tweeted: “Are you still a serial killer if you’re just killing one man repeatedly?”

Recommended Stories

@porterhouseLA tweeted: “This is literally the culture that Drake does not have” and that is the point Kendrick has made repeatedly throughout this battle. When Kendrick called Drake a colonizer and told him “we don’t wanna hear you say [that word] no more,” it wasn’t about biology. It wasn’t because he’s mixed. It’s because he lacks a deep cultural connection with African-American culture because he’s not African American. Everything Kendrick has done in this battle displayed Kendrick’s cultural competency and his cultural power and last night only added to that. He brought out Compton stars from Dr. Dre to YG to Roddy Rich and got L.A.-born NBA stars Russell Westbrook and DeMar DeRozan up on the stage dancing with him. I heard LeBron was in the house. Is there anyone who won’t join in on Kendrick’s sonic stomping? (OK, J. Cole. Touché.) And he performed in a blood-red outfit that spoke to his Blood homies and to the legacy of Tupac who rocked a blood-red sweatshirt and a blood-red hat in 1994. (That was a visual double entendre. This man is genius.) Drake is in the culture for sure, but Kendrick is the culture. It’s in his blood.

Many were kiki-ing that last night as the end of Drake—@stagbechillin tweeted: “Damn that was a nice funeral. They did the body nice.” Of course, Drake isn’t dead. He lost badly and being embarrassed in public is devastating for someone who’s all about image and being liked. He may have to discuss his PTSD with his therapist but make no mistake, his career will carry on. But he will forever carry the stain of this loss and perhaps also the pain of watching an arena full of people rhyme along with songs calling him a pedophile. Because you know Drake was at home watching as his blood pressure rose and rose. @drewscotty said, “If I were Drake I’d cancel my Amazon Prime membership immediately.” For sure.

At the end of the horrendous “The Heart Part 6,” Drake said it was good to get out, get the pen working, but after the battle what is he left with besides scars? Kendrick can do a whole show on Amazon blasting his new anti-Drake songs. It was a whole diss concert. Like a Versuz where the other MC wasn’t there. As I tweeted, “You think Drake is gonna do his records from the battle whenever he goes on tour? Nope.”

Angel Reese Sets New WNBA Record – Where Is The Buzz

[ad_1]

Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese is taking the WNBA by storm. Reese recently extended her streak of consecutive double-doubles to a record-breaking seven games, solidifying her place as a frontrunner for Rookie of the Year.

In her latest outing against the Dallas Wings, Reese put on a well-rounded performance, racking up 16 points, 18 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. More importantly, this game marked the seventh consecutive contest where she notched double-digit figures in both points and rebounds. This achievement puts her in the WNBA record books for most consecutive double-doubles by a rookie.

Looking at her stats for the entire month of June, Reese continues to impress. She’s averaging 13.4 points, second only among rookies, and leads the entire league in rebounds at 12.8 per game. Her contributions extend beyond scoring and rebounding as well, with averages of 2.3 assists and 2.3 steals, which tie her for third in the WNBA. Notably, Reese is the only rookie this season to rank in the top three in two key statistical categories.

Adding another layer to her impressive performance, Reese is the lone rookie averaging over 15 minutes per game to boast a positive plus/minus rating. At +1.9 points per game, her presence on the court consistently translates to a net positive impact for the Sky.

There’s no doubt that Angel Reese is making a significant impact in her debut season. Her scoring prowess, rebounding dominance, and well-rounded skillset have positioned her as a rising star in the WNBA. With the season still ongoing, it will be exciting to see if Reese can maintain her record-breaking form and potentially lead the Chicago Sky to a championship run.
