Prime Video Announces New Thriller Series “Haven” Starring Sophie Turner – Where Is The Buzz

[ad_1]

Prime Video has caused a stir by releasing the order for a captivating drama series titled “Haven” (working title), ahead of its first upfront presentation on May 14. A major robbery sets the stage for an interesting drama, which the critically acclaimed Sophie Turner of “Game of Thrones” is anticipated to deliver.

Turner will be joined by Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, best known for his appearances in “Bodies” and “The Queen’s Gambit,” and Archie Madekwe, who has appeared in “Saltburn” and “Gran Turismo.” The trio will lead the cast of this high-stakes thriller, which will be released on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories globally.

“Haven,” produced by Drama Republic, known for hits like “One Day” and “Doctor Foster,” has a talented creative team. S.A. Nikias, a crime novelist, will write the series, while Sam Miller, known for his work on “I May Destroy You” and “Black Mirror,” will direct and executive produce the first three episodes.

The series tells the narrative of Zara, played by Turner, an everyday office worker caught up in the century’s biggest crime. As pandemonium reigns at her workplace, Zara and her companion Luke, played by Madekwe, must navigate the perilous demands of aggressive robbers. Meanwhile, DCI Rhys, played by Fortune-Lloyd, struggles with his own personal troubles as he investigates the bizarre incident.

Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, expressed excitement about the series, hailing it as a thrilling addition to their lineup. “Haven,” he remarked, is a captivating tale that promises to captivate audiences worldwide.

Rebecca de Souza and Greg Brenman of Drama Republic agreed with Sanders, complimenting the talent of first-time TV screenwriter Sotiris Nikias. They praised Nikias’ screenplays as riveting and interesting, crediting the series’ success to his storytelling ability.

NYC’s Rikers Island jail opens Mother’s Day family visitation room

[ad_1]

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s probably the last place a mom wants to spend Mother’s Day with her kids. But a family visiting space at New York City’s notorious Rikers Island jail complex is a little more kid-friendly after a colorful redesign by the Children’s Museum of Manhattan.

The jail opened the new preschool play and learning room for the children and grandchildren of female prisoners Tuesday, a few days ahead of the Sunday holiday.

Mother’s Day means everything to me,” said Rikers inmate Nadine Leach, 43, as she watched her three-year-old granddaughter, Queen, excitedly explore the sound machines, coloring books and toys.

One interactive wall display shows a map of the city’s five boroughs. Buttons below trigger city sounds, like the screech of a subway.

Leach’s daughter Lashawna Jones, 27, said the play installation is beautiful compared with her last visit. Before, it was a mostly bare room, with a few books. Jones said the design focused her children’s attention on imaginative play, instead of their grandmother being in jail and awaiting trial on a felony drug charge.

Inmate Nadine Leach, 43, right, visits with her grandchildren and daughter Lashawna Jones, 27, in the newly opened preschool play and learn visitation hub in the Rose M. Singer Center at the Rikers Island jail complex in the Bronx borough of New York, on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. (AP Photo/Ted Shaffrey)

“It makes me sad that she’s not actually home with us for Mother’s Day. Because I feel like a little sad coming here to visit her here because I’m used to having her physically home with us. Like, right now, I’m being a big girl; I’m holding my tears back,” Jones said.

To get to the facility, families take a bus, go through security and drug screenings, and pass by walls with six layers of razer wire. Outside the new play center, a sign on blue cinderblock reads, “Inmates are permitted to hold their children during the visit.”

The visitation hub was designed and installed by the Children’s Museum of Manhattan and replicates exhibitions at the museum’s home on the Upper West Side.

The exhibits teach preschool skills: communication, sharing, literacy and executive function, said Leslie Bushara, the museum’s chief program officer.

Lynelle Maginley-Liddie, commissioner of the New York City Department of Correction, cut a giant green ceremonial ribbon to open the room.

“We want mothers to have interactions with their kids,” Maginley-Liddie said. “You know, being incarcerated can be very difficult. It can be difficult on the children. It can be difficult on the moms. And it’s important for them to have those connections even while they’re in our care, so that when they are released, that bond has been sustained during incarceration.”

Rikers Island consists mainly of men’s jail facilities that house around 6,000 people. Child-friendly exhibits will be added to those facilities over the next year, the museum said in a statement. Funding for the exhibits also will allow approved inmates to travel to the Children’s Museum of Manhattan twice per month.

People jailed at Rikers are either charged with crimes being tested in court or are serving short sentences. City officials voted to close the entire complex in 2026 and replace it with smaller neighborhood facilities that would be easier for relatives to visit, but the deadline was pushed back. Poor conditions have raised the prospect of a federal takeover.

The women’s jail, called the Rose M. Singer Center, currently holds around 370 people, according to the Department of Corrections. State officials moved hundreds of women into state facilities in 2021 in an effort to improve safety.

Angry Black Mother Goes Viral, Black TikTok Drags Daughter

[ad_1]

Mothers are far from perfect. From giving us life to raising us up to be decent human beings—most of us, anyway—mothers often make a lot of sacrifices in between. Painful sacrifices. Which is why many of them deserve to be celebrated on Mother’s Day and beyond.

Yet even if you feel otherwise, it’s probably never a good idea to use the internet to show your mother at her worst. But that’s exactly what a TikToker who goes by @rav.mcbride allegedly did.

A couple of days ago, @rav.mcbride allegedly shared a video of her mother yelling at her on the day of her graduation. The hurt in her mother’s eyes is painful to watch, but the video left many social media commentators wondering about the audacity of it all.

“No mam don’t do your mom like this,” wrote a TikToker who goes by @E.Foxy.

Another added, “Being a mother is sooo harddddd, I don’t know what happened but I HEAR that PAIN in her voice 🥺 😢 🥺 I’m a mother of 3.”

Other commentators seemed to side with the daughter, who can be heard being called Jamerah on the video.

“She sound like my momma. NO CONTACT 3YRS NOW ✨ ✨ ✨,” wrote a TikToker who goes by @Chaparis

The clip has been trending on TikTok under the tags “Toxic moms” and “mom yells at me on my graduation day.” And though we’ve all had some heated disagreements with our mothers, this generation’s need to put everything on TikTok is something else.

“Nah I need the ENTIRE story!! I’ll never judge a mother based off this right here. As a mom, I hear pain not disrespect,” wrote a TikToker who goes “Paris.”

Another commentator who goes bellabellabella simply added: “What did you do jamerah?”

And while we still don’t know the full context of the video, or whether the video is faked for social media. But, whew. If this is fake, this lady deserves an Oscar.

Social media sleuths wasted no time flooding the other videos on @rav.mcbride’s TikTok account with comments demanding to know what the story was behind the video and dragging her for posting the video then allegedly deleting it.

Posting a video that seemed to address all the negative blowback, @rav.mcbride kept her response short: “You’re in my comments while your back is getting bigger.”

Judging from another post, it looks like @rav.mcbride made it to her graduation just fine. But pictures with her mother were noticeably absent.

At any rate, we sure hope they managed to make up in time for Mother’s Day. Because like Whoopi Goldberg recently said while promoting her new memoir, “Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me,” it’s important to tell your loved ones that you love them while they are still here.

US women’s polo taps Flavor Flav as hype man for Paris Olympics

[ad_1]

Maggie Steffens asked for more support for the U.S. women’s water polo team, and the captain received one particularly surprising response.

From a clock-wearing rap icon.

Moved by Steffens’ Instagram post, Flavor Flav has stepped forward to help the U.S. team as it goes for an unprecedented fourth consecutive gold medal at the Paris Olympics this summer. He is finalizing a deal that will make him a USA Water Polo sponsor and the official hype man for a program seeking a bigger spotlight.

The 65-year-old Flav, a founding member and hype man with Public Enemy, has jumped headfirst into his new duties, highlighting some of the team’s best players on social media. He also is making plans to watch the women’s team play in Paris.

“When I come out and I watch this water polo team … ‘USA! USA!’ Yo, I’m going to be the biggest hype man that they ever had in their life,” he told the AP on Friday. “I’m going to be bigger than any cheerleader that they had in their life. I’m going to cheer this team on, and I’m going to cheer this team into winning a gold medal.”

Winning has been the usual result for the U.S. women’s team since the 2012 Olympics. But it hasn’t attracted the same attention or support as similarly dominant American programs, largely because water polo remains a niche sport throughout most of the world.

That — along with a little nostalgia — prompted Steffens, 30, the last remaining member of the 2012 team, to post on Instagram. While expressing gratitude for the opportunity to play and her love for her sport, she also encouraged anyone reading the post to check out her team and highlighted the constant financial struggle for most Olympic athletes.

“We’ve gotten a lot of comments you know of ‘Oh, it’s so cool what you’ve done. Bummer you’re not a soccer player or a basketball player, because your team would be getting way more publicity or way more support,’” Steffens said Friday from Paris, where the team is on a training trip ahead of the Olympics.

“And instead we’re still kind of where we were at 12 years ago, which for me isn’t my goal. I’ve always wanted to propel the sport forward.”

Enter Flav, who was inducted with the group Public Enemy into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Flav’s manager brought the post to his attention, and he decided he wanted to help.

“One thing about me, I know what it feels like to want to see a dream come true,” said Flav, who is known for wearing a big clock on a chain around his neck. “I know what it feels like to want to achieve a goal, and I’m the type of person that, if I see you trying, then I’m going to do whatever I can to help you.”

Steffens said it was “very surreal” when Flav — whose legal name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr. — reached out. Asked what she knew about Flav and Public Enemy before the connection, Steffens promptly imitated Flav’s frequent “Flavor Flav!” declaration.

Steffens is one of the oldest players on the U.S. team, but she said Ryann Neushul, 24, had Public Enemy in her top five on the music streaming service, Spotify. A couple of the team’s coaches and Steffens’ family also were excited about the partnership.

“My whole family was like ‘Is this real? Flav is part of the water polo world now?’” Steffens said. “I was like ‘I don’t know what’s going on, but I want to wear a clock right now and that’s how I’m feeling.’”

Steffens and the U.S. team also have another high-profile supporter in Taylor Swift. They attended the musician’s Eras Tour concert on Friday night at La Défense Arena — the venue for the women’s water polo final on Aug. 10.

Women’s national team manager Ally Beck reached out to Swift’s camp and surprised the team with the tickets. Flav said he also contacted Swift’s team, but the tickets had already been approved.

Flav, who is working on another tour with Public Enemy that could begin later this year, then held up a T-shirt with his picture that read “KING SWIFTIE.”

“I’m proud to support Taylor. … Flavor Flav is a Swiftie, the king of all the Swifties,” he said.

That’s another connection Flav has with his new favorite team.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs asks judge to dismiss ‘false’ rape claim

[ad_1]

Sean “Diddy” Combs on Friday asked a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit alleging that he and two co-defendants raped a 17-year-old girl in a New York recording studio in 2003, saying it was a “false and hideous claim” that was filed too late under the law.

The legal move is the latest piece of pushback from the 54-year-old hip-hop mogul and his legal team after he was subjected to several similar lawsuits and a subsequent criminal sex-trafficking investigation.

“Mr. Combs and his companies categorically deny Plaintiff’s decades-old tale against them, which has caused incalculable damage to their reputations and business standing before any evidence has been presented,” says the filing, which also names Combs-owned corporations as defendants. “Plaintiff cannot allege what day or time of year the alleged incident occurred, but miraculously remembers other salacious details, despite her alleged incapacitated condition.”

The lawsuit was filed in December and amended in March by the woman who now lives in Canada whose name wasn’t disclosed in the court filing. She said she was in 11th grade at a high school in a Detroit suburb in 2003, when Harve Pierre, then the president of Combs’ Bad Boy Entertainment record label, flew her to New York on a private jet and took her to a recording studio, where she was given drugs and alcohol until she was incapable of consenting to sex. Then, the lawsuit said, Pierre, Combs and a man she didn’t know took turns raping her.

The lawsuit included photographs of the woman sitting on Combs’ lap that she said were taken on the night in question.

The defense filing asks that the case be “dismissed now, with prejudice” — meaning it cannot be refiled — “to protect the Combs Defendants from further reputational injury and before more party and judicial resources are squandered.”

One of the plaintiff’s attorneys, Michael J. Willemin, said in a statement in response to the filing: “At this point, no one should take anything ‘diddy’ or his lawyers say seriously. Today’s motion is just a desperate attempt by Combs to avoid accountability for Ms. Doe’s allegations of gang rape and sexual assault. It won’t work.”

At this early stage in the lawsuit, the arguments are procedural rather than on the facts of the case.

Some of the lawsuits filed against Combs involve decades-old allegations and are among the more than 3,700 legal claims filed under New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which temporarily suspended certain legal deadlines to give sexual assault victims a last opportunity to sue over abuse that happened years or even decades ago.

The new deadlines established by that law expired, but the suit Combs filed the motion against Friday was brought under a different law, New York City’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Law. That city law also allows accusers to file civil complaints involving sexual assault claims after the statute of limitations has run out.

But Combs’ motion argues that suit was filed too late, because the city law is preempted by the state law, whose provisions mean the lawsuit needed to be filed by August of 2021 to be timely.

“New York state law trumps New York City law, without exception,’ the filing says.

The amended version of the lawsuit filed in March sought to address some of these issues, but Combs’ attorneys argue that it didn’t go far enough.

The judge has ruled the woman will need to reveal her name if the lawsuit moves forward after this challenge.

The Associated Press does not typically name people who say they have been sexually abused, unless they come forward publicly, as some of Combs’ accusers have done.

Recommended Stories

Friday’s defense filing also criticizes the suit for including “a bolded, legally irrelevant ‘trigger warning’ calculated to focus attention on its salacious and depraved allegations.”

The public airing of allegations against Combs began with a November lawsuit by the singer Cassie, his former protege and girlfriend, containing allegations of beatings, rape and other abuse between 2005 and 2018. The complaint, filed by the same attorneys who brought the suit being challenged Friday, was settled the day after it was filed. Combs denied the allegations through his lawyer before the settlement.

More lawsuits against Combs were filed in the following months. Then on March 25, Homeland Security Investigations served search warrants on his homes in Los Angeles and Miami in a sex-trafficking investigation. His lawyer called it “a gross use of military-level force.” The investigation is continuing. Combs has not been charged.

Last month, Combs filed a motion to dismiss a suit filed by Joi Dickerson, who said she was a 19-year-old college student when Combs drugged her and sexually assaulted her.
