We’ve been saying Missy Elliott’s talent is otherworldly for years. Now, that statement is officially true.

According to Billboard, on Friday, the music legend’s classic track, “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” was transmitted to deep space. It’s the first hip-hop song to get this honor, and it seems very fitting that it is bestowed upon Missy. Using its Deep Space Network, the transmission originated from NASA‘s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California and was sent all the way to Venus.

The hip-hop pioneer marveled at the moment on social media, writing on X, “YOOO this is crazy! We just went #OutOfThisWorld with NASA and sent the FIRST hip hop song into space through the Deep Space Network. My song ‘The Rain’ has officially been transmitted all the way to Venus, the planet that symbolizes strength, beauty, and empowerment. The sky is not the limit, it’s just the beginning.”

Fans had a lot of fun celebrating Missy’s latest groundbreaking accomplishment. There were a lot of dancing alien memes going around, with one fan writing on X, “Miss Missy, you’ve always been a trend setter. I can’t wait to see the aliens jamming to your music!”

Another person appreciated the synergy of the moment, posting, “This is SO EPIC ! Literally #OutOfThisWorld ! “The Rain” is finally being played for its native people lol.”

Someone else wants aliens to reenact the famous video, writing on X, “This is sooo dope Miss. We gotta get the aliens some trash bags so they can have the full effect. Keep pushing the needle forward! This is Hip Hop history!”

When Missy released “The Rain” in 1997 it was heralded as a new sound in hip-hop. The way she and Timbaland combined her melodic flow with sharp beats felt futuristic — it was a stark contrast to the masculine, overly boastful rap music that dominated the genre at the time.

NASA could’ve chosen any hip-hop legend for this honor, but they specifically went with a woman. This may not seem like a big deal, but in a genre where female artists haven’t always been given their due, it’s pretty badass that the first transmission in deep space is by a woman.

The television industry was abuzz today as the nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced. This year’s contenders showcase a remarkable blend of groundbreaking achievements, diverse representation, and exceptional talent.

A Historic Night for Women and Diversity

The 2024 Emmy nominations marked a significant milestone for women in television. Selena Gomez made history as the most nominated Latina producer for a Comedy Series, adding to her growing list of accolades with a nomination for Leading Actress in a Comedy Series for “Only Murders in the Building.” Sofía Vergara also etched her name in Emmy history as the first Latina nominated for Lead Actress in a Limited Series for her portrayal of Griselda Blanco in “Griselda.”

Record-Breaking Performances and Series

“The Bear” dominated the comedy category, shattering the previous record held by “30 Rock” with an astonishing 23 nominations. The series’ gripping storytelling and exceptional ensemble cast, including Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, captivated audiences and critics alike.

On the drama front, “Shōgun” made a powerful impact with 25 nominations, showcasing the epic scale and historical significance of the series.

Breakthrough Stars and Veteran Talent

The nominations also highlighted a new generation of talented performers. First-time Emmy nominees included Nicole Beharie for “The Morning Show,” Aja Naomi King for “Lessons in Chemistry,” Brie Larson and Lewis Pullman for “Lessons in Chemistry,” Dakota Fanning for “Ripley,” and Nava Mau for “Baby Reindeer.”

Meanwhile, veteran actors continued to impress. Angela Bassett solidified her status as a television icon with her ninth Emmy nomination, while Jonathan Bailey earned his first nomination for “Fellow Travelers.”

I feel bad for Bronny James. He’s out there on the floor, playing for the Lakers in summer league ball, missing shots, chucking up airballs, blowing defensive assignments, and repeatedly proving that he does not belong in the NBA. He’s averaging 4.3 points a game and has yet to hit a single three-pointer. If he’s struggling this much in the summer league, he’s not ready for the real deal. And his failures are happening in front of the world. He’s got real pros like Jaylen Brown, the NBA Finals MVP, sitting courtside saying Bronny’s not at the pro level. It’s sad, and it’s not entirely Bronny’s fault.

Bronny is the ultimate nepo baby — he got the job solely because of his powerful father, LeBron James. LeBron walked so Bronny could brick. Part of me is happy to see Bronny get the thrill of a lifetime — playing with the Lakers. I see his parents beaming at him with pride and I’m happy to see a Black child getting to experience that joy. I’ve spent decades watching so many unqualified white kids feel that same joy. We all know white kids who are unprepared to do dad’s job or to work at his company, but dad gets them a job anyway. Black kids rarely get to do that.

But Bronny’s also giving me “take your kid to work day” vibes. He looks like the boss’ son out there, missing shots and getting blown past when he’s defending but still playing. Sometimes, he looks so lost out there that it’s giving Make-A-Wish kid vibes. Like everyone knows Bronny shouldn’t be there, but hey, let’s pass him the ball and make sure he has a fun day. I wonder how much resentment his teammates feel. 

I wonder how much of this is Bronny’s dream and how much of this is LeBron’s dream. We’ll never know the exact percentage, but we know this is partly LeBron’s. He told us repeatedly that he wanted to play with his son. But within that, I see a possible parenting mistake. I see LeBron’s paternal joy — his desire to play alongside his son — at war with his paternal responsibility to guide his son the right way. Let me explain.

Gen Xers know that when we were kids, our parents were not our friends. For better or worse, they put themselves on a level above us. Nowadays, there’s a culture of parents being more like friends or peers. The parent/friend would say I want to play with my son; that would be so much fun, and I’m on the Lakers, so I’ll help make him a Laker. The parent/protector would say I’d love for you to be in the league; that would be a dream come true, but if I’m being honest with myself, I can see that you’re not NBA ready, and if you come into the league too early it won’t be good for your development as a player. As a parent, my wants should come after your needs. I need to guide you into another year or two in college. That way, you can become the best you can be. Parents are supposed to help guide kids into becoming their best selves. I don’t know if LeBron is doing that here.

This summer, horror aficionados can expect a chilling new film from a distinguished director. Lee Daniels, lauded for his dramatic works “Precious” and “The Butler,” ventures into the supernatural realm with his highly anticipated project, “The Deliverance.”

The film follows the story of Ebony Jackson (played by Andra Day), a single mother battling personal struggles who moves her family to a new home seeking a fresh start. However, their hopes for a peaceful life are shattered when they discover their new residence harbors a dark secret. Strange and disturbing phenomena plague the house, drawing the attention of Child Protective Services and jeopardizing Ebony’s ability to keep her family together.

In a desperate fight for survival, Ebony finds herself locked in a terrifying battle not only for her own life but also for the souls of her children.

“The Deliverance” boasts a stellar cast alongside Day. Andra Day, Mo’Nique, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor are teaming up to appear in “Deliverance,” a new film by director Lee Daniels. 

The drama film, which is inspired by a true story, follows struggling single mother Ebony Jackson (Day). Jackson moves her family into a new home for a “fresh start” after “fighting her personal demons,” according to the official synopsis, per a press release. “When strange occurrences inside the home raise the suspicions of Child Protective Services and threaten to tear the family apart, Ebony soon finds herself locked in a battle for her life and the souls of her children,” the synopsis reads.  

“It’s a thriller, it’s horror, but it’s also a family drama. It’s genre-bending,” Day tells People in an interview. “It’s also a movie about faith, which is really important to me too.”

Day says that it was “incredible” to be on set alongside Ellis-Taylor and Mo’Nique, women she says are “at the top of their game and at the top of their craft and are still hungry, still wanting to do their best, still have that fire and will not stop until they get it.”

“Deliverance” reunites Daniels with Day, who gave an Oscar-nominated performance in his film “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” The actress says that “Billie” was her first movie and she was frequently told by others in the industry that Holiday was going to be “the hardest character” she’d ever play, but that wasn’t her experience.  

“No, that’s not true!” Day said about Holiday being a difficult character, People reported. “Which is great, because doing the work with Lee, and because he’s such a phenomenal director, he was looking for something so specific and so nuanced. He challenged me more and was able to pull more out of me.”

“Deliverance” is also the second collaboration between Daniels and Mo’Nique since the two reconciled a couple of years ago. They were involved in a 13-year feud, which stemmed from Mo’Nique’s refusal to promote Daniels’ 2009 film “Precious.” In 2022, Daniels apologized to Mo’Nique, who won an Oscar for her performance, ending their feud and paving the way for the creation of the 2023 horror film “The Reading,” and “Deliverance.”

Action auteur John Woo, revered for films like “Face/Off” and “Hard Boiled,” returns with a radical reimagining of his own 1989 Hong Kong classic, “The Killer.” This new iteration, set against the backdrop of Paris, promises a thrilling blend of Woo’s signature operatic action and contemporary storytelling.

The recently released trailer showcases Nathalie Emmanuel (“The Fast Saga,” “Game of Thrones”) as Zee, a notorious assassin known as the “Queen of the Dead.” When Zee defies her shadowy handler (Sam Worthington) and refuses a hit on a young woman, her world explodes. Alliances crumble, a tenacious detective (Omar Sy) sets his sights on her, and Zee is plunged into a web of criminal conspiracy that forces her to confront her past.
