Coming off one of the most electrifying and exciting weekends in Hip-Hop history, the likes of which will probably never experience again, Drake and anything associated with him is being destroyed. All thanks to the tunes of one Kendrick Lamar.
Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar: A Brief History Of A Beef
Although there may have been an argument with some on who was winning the battle after the releases of “Family Matters” and “meet the grahams,” there is no question who is up in the eyes of the public. Especially after the shocking release of “Not Like Us.”
Not Like Us
It’s currently the most popular song in the world right now and has everyone screaming, “They not like us! They not like us! They not like us!”
If there were any questions on the reach of this beef, look no further than social media.
On Tuesday, @iamntyrell on X shared a photo of an OVO store on the famed Carnaby Street in London. On the front window of the store, someone spray-painted the very lyrics of “Not Like Us.”
Just look at the below photo:
This is proof that the hate and slander people have for Drake has crossed borders.
It’s also wild that this picture was shared around the same time the news came out that a security guard was shot outside of Drake’s Toronto mansion early Tuesday morning.
According to CTV News Toronto, the guard was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
In a press conference, Toronto police inspector Paul Krawczyk added that they have been in contact with Drake’s team and that they expect to have video of the incident.
He also added that they know when and where the incident occurred but currently have no descriptions of the suspect or the vehicle they fled in.
Netflix is set to premiere its latest offering, “Gangs of Galicia,” on June 21st, promising audiences a riveting saga of revenge and forbidden love. Produced by Vaca Films and featuring a stellar cast led by Clara Lago and Tamar Novas, this series is poised to captivate viewers with its gripping narrative and compelling characters.
In the picturesque town of Cambados, “Gangs of Galicia” introduces us to Ana (Clara Lago), a determined lawyer with a mysterious past. Ana’s arrival in Cambados sparks intrigue among the locals, particularly Daniel (Tamar Novas), the son of a notorious drug trafficker and the de facto leader of the “Padín clan.” As Ana seeks to carve out a new life for herself, she harbors a secret agenda—to settle old scores and confront the ghosts of her past.
Clara Lago, known for her roles in “The Neighbor” and “Spanish Affair,” brings depth and intensity to the character of Ana, while Tamar Novas, of “The Mess You Left Behind” fame, delivers a nuanced performance as Daniel, torn between loyalty to his family and his growing feelings for Ana. The chemistry between Lago and Novas promises to ignite the screen, adding a layer of complexity to the unfolding drama.
Joining Lago and Novas are a talented ensemble cast, including Xosé Antonio Touriñán, Chechu Salgado, Melania Cruz, Miguel de Lira, Francesc Garrido, Diego Anido, and María Pujalte, each bringing their unique talents to the table.
Behind the scenes, “Gangs of Galicia” is helmed by creator and screenwriter Jorge Guerricaechevarría, whose previous works include acclaimed Spanish productions. Director Roger Gual infuses the series with his distinctive vision, combining suspense, romance, and intrigue to create a compelling viewing experience.

A generation of this nation’s students have grown into adulthood with their school years shaped by active shooter drills and police in schools. Lawmakers just cannot — or will not — take the necessary action to stymie the school shootings that have marred the education landscape for decades.
The bill’s proponents argue that it will help to fill gaps in school security where there is limited law enforcement presence, particularly in rural areas, and that requiring annual training, background screenings and conditioning applications on the approval of school principals and local law enforcement will address concerns about arming teachers.
However, giving teachers guns will not make schools safer.
Just as unarmed Black people are disproportionately victimized by police in communities, Black children are endangered by Tennessee’s law. Black children are already disproportionately subjected to overly punitive discipline. Tennessee’s law will allow educators to carry concealed weapons, without notice to parents or students about which educators are armed. Most alarming, this action is contrary to research that shows that punitive interventions, like heightened police presence in schools, have little positive impact on school violence. If guns in schools are the problem, then why are lawmakers passing bills to put more guns in schools? I argue that lawmakers are unwilling to enact evidence-based school safety interventions, like gun-control measures and restorative practices because they are committed to a narrative of “school safety” that is racialized, limited, and detached from research.
Many interventions implemented in schools in the name of “school safety” are racialized, meaning that they rely upon stereotypes about the criminality of Black youth. These stereotypes cast Black students as lazy, criminally minded, intellectually limited, and defiant. These stereotypes persist despite research showing that Black students do not misbehave more than their white peers. As a result, Black children are disproportionately subjected to overly punitive discipline interventions, including suspensions, expulsions, and arrests, that facilitate their exclusion from schools.
In addition to subjecting Black students to the consequences of these discipline practices, the limited public narrative on school safety obscures other forms of violence taking place in schools. This includes curricular violence, like bans on the teaching of the contributions of Black Americans and other historically marginalized groups, like LGBTQIA+ people to this country, such as Tennessee’s 2021 law prohibiting the teaching of so-called “divisive concepts” like racial inequality. In addition to curricular violence, many students are also impacted by violence in the form of disinvestment in their education. Tennessee is ranked among the most inequitably funded education systems in the nation, falling at 44th in the nation among per pupil expenditures. These funding inequities disproportionately impact low-income students in segregated schools who are deprived of resources such as experienced educators, college-preparatory courses, and quality facilities. Instead of putting more guns in schools, Tennessee lawmakers should use their legislative power to invest in interventions that have been found to promote genuine school safety.
These interventions should be evidence-based, community-driven and responsive to what students indicate they need to feel safe in schools. School safety should be defined by the students, school staff and leaders, and other members of the school community, and may look different in every school. To aid school stakeholders in identifying the interventions that can work for them, researchers have identified several interventions and practices shown to promote safety and inclusion, such as restorative practices, social and emotional learning, multi-tiered systems of behavioral supports, and ongoing training on bias for all adults in the school who interact with young people. These interventions must be adjusted for the particular school context and implemented in culturally responsive ways.
Arming teachers will only escalate the harm that current discipline interventions inflict on Black students — likely with deadly consequences. Instead of putting more guns in schools, lawmakers must demonstrate political courage and implement gun-control and safety measures and invest in evidence-based interventions, crafted with community input, that are responsive to school-specific needs, that can promote genuine safety for all students.

When a famous person finds themselves caught in a very public legal scandal, one of the first things they do is begin the steps to recovering their image. For Sean “Didddy” Combs, that’s easier said than done.
‘Glee’ Star Amber Riley On Messing Up In Front Of Stevie Wonder, Plus Sequel To ‘Single Black Female’
When his ex-girlfriend Cassie filed a lawsuit in November 2023, alleging that the hip-hop mogul raped and physically abused her throughout their 11-year relationship, it opened the door for other alleged victims to file sexual harassment and sexual assault lawsuits against the rapper/producer.
In the aftermath of the allegations, Diddy has been dropped by several brands and has become a pariah among his famous friends. Combs is no longer seen as the charming life of the party entertainer he once was. Even though he still has multiple legal cases pending, the Bad Boy founder is starting the process of changing his current public persona as an alleged sexual predator.
On Monday, the “Coming Home” artist dropped an Instagram video that was presumably meant to show how he’s handling his current controversies with strength and perseverance. It featured all the “inspirational clip” cliches including: Diddy in the “arms wide open” pose, him on a beach at the edge of the water and a voiceover reading inspiring Bible quotes. In this instance, famous preacher Bishop T.D. Jakes did the voiceover.
“Not hysterical. Not frantic. Not anxious. Not fretful,” Jakes says. “But steady in the storm. Looks bad. Looks tough but remain steady in the storm.”
OK, let’s unpack this self-serving nonsense. First of all, Diddy should not be in image recovery mode. He’s extremely wealthy. If he stays quiet and doesn’t work for a while, he and his family will be fine. When the Department of Homeland Security raids two of your homes and the world finds out you’re allegedly being investigated for sex trafficking, you need to focus on your legal issues and keep a low profile.
If you read the comments on the video, he obviously still has supporters, but now is not the time for him to make himself the center of attention.
And as for T.D. Jakes, his reputation has also taken a hit, as his name has been dragged into Diddy’s legal troubles. I understand if his beliefs tell him to show compassion for Combs while he’s struggling, but from a PR perspective, he should be distancing himself—and by extension—his church from these types of accusations.
At this level of fame, they both have public relations professionals on their teams, which has us wondering, who thought this was a good idea? Did their staff advise them not to do this and they did it anyway? Or did someone think this was going to be a solid first step toward redemption?
Either way, it just came off as another narcissistic, manipulative attempt by DIddy to avoid being seen as the bad guy.

It’s been nearly a month since one Jermaine Lamarr Cole, better known as J. Cole, turned the hip-hop world on its head. After dropping a response record titled “7 Minute Drill” (on a surprise album called “Might Delete Later”) to Kendrick Lamar’s verse on the Metro Boomin and Future record “Like That,” Cole went on stage during his Dreamville Festival on April 7 and apologized to Kendrick and his fans for doing something (recording an arguably very mid-diss) that didn’t feel right in his soul. He recorded the song because that’s what the streets expected; J. Cole is easily one of the best rappers in the game and has spent the better part of his career letting everybody know that they didn’t want any smoke with him. And then came the smoke, and he wafted away in a sincere, genuine fashion, but it seemed … weird. Of all the people to back out of a hip-hop battle, J. Cole would be the last person you’d ever expect to do so.
The streets were pissed. Annoyed. We felt bamboozled. Hoodwinked. Run amok. How could J. Cole, the most equipped and best-suited for beef of the three, back out of this? And like that? I haven’t been that annoyed by an artist in a long time. And to apologize in such a public fashion on stage and such? It was such an odd and unexpected thing that I think it’s safe to say that most of us didn’t think there was any coming back from that move. It was easily one of the most memorable occasions of my hip-hop life, and I was alive when Tupac and Biggie were murdered.
And then something happened. Drake released “Push Ups” and “Taylor Made Freestyle.” Fine records, though the AI Tupac and Snoop was a curious choice, and for a second, Drake looked like he was up; he was rapping and calling out the slight Compton MC, and for a split second, everybody was like Drake might still have it.

Drake does not still have it. Kendrick Lamar turned into (or had a reason to reveal himself as) an absolutely angry, petty, creative, evil genius and has gone on a murderer’s row barrage of releases (“Euphoria,”“6:16 in LA,”“Meet the Grahams,” and “Not Like Us”) that are almost getting a little too mad. Drake and Kendrick are lobbing criminal allegations at one another, allegations of outside children and the homie got your girl pregnant; there are cultural appropriation claims, pictures of folks’ homes and private photos, etc. It’s gotten messy to the point of getting uncomfortable. Hell, we’ve even reached the point of a shooting outside of Drake’s home in Toronto (the same one that Kendrick put on the cover of the record “Not Like Us”); thankfully, Drake wasn’t harmed but somebody was shot. Does it have ANYTHING to do with this beef between Kendrick and Drake? As of this writing, we don’t know, but we have reached the “anything is possible” portion of the battle and that’s where things get concerning. If we find out it did, will anybody be surprised? Probably not.
Meanwhile, we haven’t heard from J. Cole in a month, and he has gone from being looked at as soft and corny to being considered one of the most prescient, astute market analyzers of all time. Instead of looking weak, Cole looks like a genius. He’s the smart guy in all of this who assessed the situation, realized he never wanted it in the first place and wisely (and maturely) decided to gracefully bow out. Even “The Apology” doesn’t have the same sting anymore since the words “O-V-Hoe,” pedophile, wife-beater and actual children’s names have been bandied about and thrown in the mix. While Drake’s “Family Matters” record was cool, Kendrick’s “Meet the Grahams” was one of the most disrespectful things I’ve ever heard in my life, and remember, I grew up with Tupac’s “Hit ‘Em Up.” And much like Tupac’s record, Kendrick actually dropped a club-level bop with “Not Like Us” that I actually heard in a club the other day. I mean, I don’t know where this is going, but I feel like J. Cole made the absolute smartest move by deciding he would just stick to his career plan and move in that direction.
J. Cole, my bad. I felt like you were looking soft out here, and as it turns out, you just knew better. You let us know that your decision to respond wasn’t what you really wanted to do so I’ll take that at face value, but I’m going to assume you also realized that Drake and Kendrick are, for lack of a better word, crazy and drive with no brakes. This beef could easily go on for as long as Kendrick’s anger persists and since it seems genuine, Kendrick might be in this for the long haul.
Point is, Cole, my bad, bro. You don’t know me — I shot you a peace sign at a show in New York back in like 2010, but I don’t think you saw it. Either way, I apologize for questioning your methods. You were right, fam. You got it. I’ll go back to waiting for “The Fall Off.”
K. Thanks. Bye.

Jeezy Talks New Book, Life Lessons, His Love For Taylor Swift & More
Just last month, things took an uglier turn when Jeannie alleged in new court documents that she endured both physical and verbal abuse at the hands of Jeezy on several instances. Prior to that, we told you how the “Put On” rapper had filed for primary custody of their two-year-old Monaco citing his belief that she “would have more stability.” He later walked that back and amended his request for both he and Jeanni to have equal amount. And before that, Jeezy alleged that Jeannie was “gatekeeping” their child which in turned prompted her to clap back against those claims and allege that she had concerns for “reasonable safety” stemming from alleged unsafely stored guns (presumably owned by Jeezy) that were around while the toddler was present.
Now, in new court documents obtained by People, it looks like we may now know part of the reason why this whole mess has been, well…..a mess. According to Jeezy, he’s alleged that Jeannie wanted to have another child with him via in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment after he communicated with her his plans to file for divorce in June 2023.
The couple had allegedly been trying to conceive again naturally for “over a year,” but to no avail. Per the parameters of the procedure, you need your partner’s sign off before you can move forward and according to Jeezy’s lawyers—these allegations about abuse from Jeannie all stem from the fact that Jeezy declined to go that route with her and instead decided to uncouple instead.
The court documents, per People:
“The Petitioner had to contact the doctor directly in August 2023 to let her know that he would not be participating in the fertilization of any additional eggs with the Respondent,” the court documents claim. “If [he] were so violent as the Respondent claims, why would she want to have a second child with him? If the Petitioner were so irresponsible and created such an unsafe home environment for the parties’ minor child, why would the Respondent desperately want to have a second baby with the Petitioner? The answer is because the Petitioner is not violent, and the Petitioner is not irresponsible.”
Jeezy also alleged that Jeannie “introduced strife, physical and emotional abuse, and volatility into the parties’ marriage,” and that she was “used to docile men.”
As previously reported by The Root, Jeezy has denied any and all claims of harm, saying in a statement in late April: “The allegations are not only false, but also deeply disturbing, especially coming from someone I loved. This malicious attempt to tarnish my character and disrupt my family is ridiculous. It’s disheartening to witness the manipulation and deceit at play and at this time my main concern is being an active father to our daughter as I continue to fight for court mandated joint custody. Rest assured, the truth will prevail through the proper legal channels.”

Mother’s Day is a joyous occasion for many, but let’s face it: the day can also be very difficult for some. From the loss of a parent or a child to a complicated or estranged relationship and beyond, “Mother wounds” can hurt —deeply.
However, Mother wounds aren’t always about mourning a relationship. Sometimes, a mother could be overwhelmed or working through a challenging dynamic with her children. Other times, a mother could struggle to feel like she’s getting it right.
Rather than tiptoe around these individuals, there are ways you can show up for them and help them endure and even find new meaning in the day.
If you know someone struggling with Mother’s Day this year, you may be brainstorming ways to help them get through. Below, we’ve gathered a few ideas and gift options by Black brands that could help hold space for the complexity of Mother’s Day.
A thoughtful read
(Photo: Hatchet Books/Blackstone Publishing)
Grief is an extremely heavy emotion to process. As sad and difficult as it may be at first, many find comfort in knowing that it’s often a sign of love. You can remind anyone on your list who may be grieving this year of this fact with the read “Grief is Love” by Marisa Renee Lee. It also helps to know we’re not alone. Released today, “Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me” by Whoopi Goldberg employs the entertainment legend’s wise and hilarious voice as she looks honestly at her grief in the wake of losing her mother and brother.
While discussing the new release with People magazine, Goldberg explained how she realized her grief had turned into a brain fog where she couldn’t remember much after her brother died or how long both he and her mom had been gone.
“I just thought, ‘Wow, if you can’t keep how they’ve been gone together, it’s no wonder you can’t remember anything,” she told the publication. “It’s no wonder you can’t remember anything. So just maybe you should just write some stuff down, see what happens if you do that.’ “
Goldberg spoke in greater detail about the read with theGrio; check out what she had to say in our video, above.

A stylish symbol
(Photo: Black Owned Everything)
The ancient Egyptians thought scarab beetles symbolized resurrection, rebirth, transformation, or, in a sense, the circle of life. To this day, many still take comfort in the symbol, especially during times of mourning. For anyone you know who may be mourning but may also find comfort in spiritual symbolism, gift them this winged scarab necklace or some other icon of life and soul.
A reflection journal
(Photo: Be Rooted)
Regardless of the reason, some who are dealing with a difficult Mother’s Day might benefit from a place to put their thoughts. You can even find a journal with an encouraging or thoughtful mantra on the cover, like Be Rooted’s “Trust the Journey” notebook.
A plant
(Photo: Grounded)
When a person is coping with grief, it can sometimes help ease the pain to have a new life to care for. As floral arrangements quickly die and get discarded, having a living plant around can be a more lasting comfort. Gift anyone on your list who may be struggling this year after the recent loss of either a mother or a child a new low-maintenance plant, like the Neon Pathos plant sold by Grounded.
A word of encouragement
(Photo: Sincerez/Mahogany)
The role of a mother is a big one, and yet, despite billions of women having done it for centuries, no one has left behind a definitive “how-to” guide. (No mom has had the time!) Besides, there’s no right way, although it can feel like there’s a wrong way. Sometimes, what a mother needs is encouragement and to know she’s doing a good job. For the overwhelmed mothers in your life, remind them how well they’re doing; gift them affirmation cards like the Black Icons set or Words That Work deck to encourage them when you can’t be there to cheer them on.
A self-care set
(Photo: Mantl/54 Thrones)
Their mother could be long-distance or the relationship could be fraught. They might be mourning their mother. No matter the circumstance, inviting a friend who is having a difficult Mother’s Day to care for themselves imparts some major maternal energy. Send the message loud and clear by gifting them a high-quality skincare set like the Complete Routine set by Mantl or the Lather + Slather bundle by 54 Thrones.
A soothing candle
(Photo: Wick and Glow Candle Co/Paper White Candles)
There is a candle fit for every occasion, including Mother’s Day. You can stick to a serious and touching tribute by gifting the Dear Mama set to anyone missing their mother’s warmth. Or you can press on the funny bone just a little with the popular “Mom’s last nerve” candle for those who may be missing when they used to annoy her. Either could also work as a lovely gift from a child to their mom — especially if they’re trying to smooth anything over.
A pop culture reference
(Photo: Trini Gee Shop)
Blanket someone missing that motherly comfort or in need of some maternal encouragement in a blanket covered in the faces of iconic Black TV moms. We can’t think of anything more comforting than being wrapped up in Aunt Viv or Clair Huxtable’s warm embrace. Created by The Trini Gee shop on Etsy, the pattern comes available on a fleece blanket, t-shirt, crewneck, or coffee mug.
Offer them a safe space
(Photo: Adobe Stock)
While a thoughtful gift is appreciated in any scenario, sometimes what someone struggling with Mother’s Day needs is a safe space to express themselves. Offer them a listening ear without judgment or even advice — just listen. Let them know you are here for them throughout the day and beyond.
Help them honor their mother or child
(Photo: Adobe Stock)
Every person grieves differently, and a person in mourning during Mother’s Day may find it cathartic to use the day to honor either their lost mother or child. Paying homage to the deceased can take place in a variety of ways, including holding a brief tribute ceremony in a place they loved, eating their favorite foods, or playing music you associate with the departed.
Start a new tradition — or invite them to take part in your own
(Photo: Adobe Stock)
There are plenty of us who look forward to doing the same thing every year to celebrate our mothers. Perhaps they enjoy going to the latest release in theaters, a decadent brunch, or receiving a massive bouquet of flowers (or all of the above). When either the mother or the child is no longer here to participate, the traditions we no longer get to enjoy can make contending with the day that much more difficult. This year, consider helping anyone struggling with the loss of old traditions start a new one.
As you make plans for the day, don’t forget to invite anyone you know who doesn’t have plans to take part in yours. For some, being alone or pretending as if the day isn’t happening at all could feel worse than getting someone else’s mom a card and showing up to brunch.
Feed them
(Photo: Adobe Stock)
Those of us who have been lucky enough to taste the healing powers of a mother’s home cooking understand its nurturing power. We can’t think of much that is more maternal than feeding someone in need of comfort. You don’t even have to break out the apron and whip something up in the kitchen; you can order in their favorite, treat them to lunch, or even give them a DoorDash gift card.
Remind them they’re not alone
(Photo: Adobe Stock)
No one, and we repeat no one, is alone in having a difficult time on Mother’s Day. Each year, many people struggle with the day. Simply reaching out to remind someone they aren’t alone and that you are here for them could have a greater impact than any gift or gesture ever could.
Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar: A Brief History Of A Beef
According to CTV News Toronto, one man was injured in the incident and taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The shooting allegedly occurred overnight and happened very close to Drake’s Bridle Path home, known as “The Embassy.”
I know the first thing people are thinking. Was Drake hurt?
It’s been made clear by local authorities that he was not the individual who was shot and he is willing to cooperate with police in the investigation.
Toronto Police Operations gave more details in a post on social media, saying that the incident occurred between Bayview Ave. & Lawrence Ave E. after 2:00 a.m. The suspect left the scene after the shooting occurred.
Although authorities know when and where the incident occurred, they currently have no descriptions of the suspect or the vehicle he fled in. As of this morning, the area has been taped off by police and they are expected to provide more descriptive details later today.
The timing of this incident is obviously eerie considering it occurred just days after the craziest weekend in rap history involving Drake and his Compton rival, Kendrick Lamar. In a span of six days, six songs dropped between both of these artists.
Ironically, the cover art for K-Dot’s most recent and popular diss, “Not Like Us,” shows an aerial view of Drake’s Bridle Path home with several red markers across. These markers resemble those found on maps marking the homes of registered sex offenders.
In short, before even hearing the song, Lamar labeled Drake and his associates as sex offenders and he continues to do so when you hear the lyrics.
These are unsubstantiated claims that were later denied by Drake on his latest record, “The Heart Part 6.”
