Members of the Squad, who face primary challenges because of their stance on Israel, scored their first victory. Here are the other races to watch.

[ad_1]

Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Read more opinions on theGrio.

Has the Squad reached a turning point?

The members of the Squad — progressive, Democratic Congress members of color — are facing primary challenges because of their position against Israel. Pro-Israel groups such as AIPAC and Republican billionaire donors are pouring tons of money to unseat Black social justice lawmakers who oppose U.S. support for Israeli apartheid and the genocide of Palestinians.

What we are witnessing is a big money operation designed to purge Democratic critics of Israel, at a time of massive public opposition and outrage over what Israel is doing to the Palestinians.

AIPAC is focused on the Squad, as the pro-Israel lobbying group is expected to spend $100 million to unseat these Democrats who have urged President Biden to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. In a first test for progressive lawmakers, Rep. Summer Lee — the first Black woman elected to Congress from Pennsylvania — killed it in the Democratic primary. Lee won by 20 points against her centrist opponent, Edgewood, Pa., City Councilwoman Bhavini Patel.

Patel, who positioned herself as a centrist Democrat, received financial support from Jeffrey Yass, a GOP businessman, TikTok and TruthSocial investor and billionaire megadonor who supports public funding of private schools and conservative groups in Israel. Yass, now the largest donor nationwide in the 2024 election, funds the Moderate PAC, a super PAC that supports centrist Democrats like Lee’s primary challenger. Patel disavowed Yass’ support, which included more than $600,000 to sponsor ads that painted Lee as unsupportive of Biden because she criticized him.

One must wonder why a Republican is inserting himself into a Democratic primary and getting into Black folks’ — or specifically, Summer Lee’s — business. Well, Yass is also tight with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and bankrolled Netanyahu’s judicial coup, an attempt to take over the Israeli courts that was met with mass protests.

Meanwhile, with AIPAC spreading its money around to Democratic primary challengers, some members of the Squad may have more of an uphill battle for reelection than Rep. Lee.

Elections

AIPAC is bankrolling the campaign of Westchester County Executive George Latimer, a Democrat who wants to unseat Rep. Jamaal Bowman in his New York district in Bronx and Westchester counties. Bowman is considered one of the most vulnerable progressives running in Congress, with a district that was redrawn to represent more of suburban Westchester.

AIPAC is responsible for 42% of $1.4 million in total campaign contributions to Latimer, according to The Intercept. And a Trump Republican megadonor hosted a fundraiser for the candidate. An AIPAC donor even urged Jewish Republicans to switch parties and vote against Bowman — a critic of Israel who has called for a ceasefire — in the Democratic primary.

Missouri Congresswoman Cori Bush is being outspent and outpolled by challenger Wesley Bell, the St. Louis County prosecutor. Bush, who has been among the most vocal lawmakers in Congress against the Israeli bombing of Gaza, has warned supporters that AIPAC wants to buy the House seat. And with AIPAC support, Bell has $1.1 million in cash on hand, double the amount of Bush. One poll, from February, has Bell leading Bush by 22 points.

Elected in a wave of progressive prosecutors following the Michael Brown killing in Ferguson, Mo., Bell, who was running to unseat GOP Sen. Josh Hawley, suddenly switched races to run against Bush.

“I’m being targeted by AIPAC because not only do I believe Palestinians deserve to live freely and peacefully just like Israelis, but because I want to protect our democracy from Republican extremism,” Bush told The New York Times.

“We proudly endorse Wesley Bell, who is a strong advocate for the U.S.-Israel relationship,” said AIPAC’s Marshall Wittmann, “in clear contrast to his opponent who represents the extremist anti-Israel fringe.” Bell criticized Rep. Bush for saying Israel was engaging in an ”ethnic cleansing campaign” against the Palestinians in Gaza, calling her statement “offensive” and saying “I think we have to stand with our allies.” Bell promised to “stand with the president.”

While Rep. Bush has received contributions from NBA star Kyrie Irving of the Dallas Mavericks, and progressive groups such as the Squad Victory Fund and Progressive Voices for Peace, Bell has enjoyed donations from a number of billionaires, including donors tied to Republican politics. For example, hedge fund billionaire Daniel Loeb — who has contributed to Democrats such as Barack Obama and Cory Booker — has funded GOP politicos such as Elise Stefanik, Kevin McCarthy, Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, John McCain and Mitt Romney.

And Reid Hoffman, the billionaire founder of LinkedIn and Biden donor who bankrolled Trump rival Nikki Haley gave a maximum donation to Bell.

Democratic Majority for Israel (DMFI) PAC has endorsed Wesley Bell, claiming that Bush has a “longstanding enmity towards Israel.” DMFI PAC also endorsed Latimer in the New York race against Bowman. The pro-Israel group is spending a total of $3 million for these two primary challengers to progressive Black incumbents.

In Minnesota, Rep. Ilhan Omar is facing a challenge as well. Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries — whose largest contributor is AIPAC and who was accused of caping for Netanyahu by attending an AIPAC-funded junket to Israel with 24 House Democrats — is nonetheless supporting Omar and all Democratic incumbents. Omar, whose daughter Isra Hirsi was arrested and suspended from Columbia University for participating in a pro-Palestinian encampment protest, called AIPAC a “right-wing super PAC” funded by “dark money.”

Omar, who squeaked by and won a primary challenge against Black former Minneapolis City Councilman Don Samuels, is polling 18 points ahead of Samuels in a 2024 rematch. Samuels claims he is not receiving money from AIPAC, which spent $350,000 against Omar in 2022, but says he would consider it if offered.

At this point, Squad members Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) are safe. Pressley, who has evolved from a pro-Israel stance and now calls for a ceasefire, has not had a serious opponent since her first victory in 2018. AIPAC has not made any moves against her in this election cycle, according to Politico.

In light of the robust spending by AIPAC and others, more than 20 progressive groups have joined forces to form “Reject AIPAC.” This collective effort is designed to challenge AIPAC’s campaign to silence “growing dissent in Congress” over Israel.

That growing dissent reflects a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza — a U.S.-funded industrial massacre of tens of thousands of Palestinians, famine and the first livestreamed social media genocide. Two-thirds of voters, including majorities among Democrats, Independents and Republicans have called for a ceasefire in Gaza and half of Biden voters polled believe Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians.

A majority of Black Americans want a permanent ceasefire and conditional U.S. military aid to Israel.

Palestine has become a defining human rights, social justice and free speech moment of this century. Protests supporting Gaza are spilling into the streets and college campuses of America as Black college students, scholars, clergy, civic leaders, activists and others are organizing and speaking out for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel, facing arrest, suspension and punishment for doing so.

And it is within this context that the Israel lobby, like the NRA and others, is engaged in the legalized bribery of politicians, pouring money into races to replace the Squad with more compliant, moderate members of Congress — including compliant Black lawmakers — who will toe the line on the billions of dollars going to Israel and who will support everything Israel does.

Ne-Yo’s Ex Calls Him ‘Diddy Jr,’ Later Apologizes

[ad_1]

In news that can only be described as “I’m sorry, what?”—singer Ne-Yo’s ex-girlfriend and the mother of his two children Sade Bagnerise is spewing some shocking allegations about the “Sexy Love” singer.

In an Instagram live video posted on Thursday, Bagnerise and the singer can be seen and heard getting in a heated argument over him not being as present in the home for their kids as she’d like and his alleged conduct when he is home with the children.

Bagnerise accused the “Do You” singer of having “weed, alcohol, mushrooms” and prostitutes inside their home while their children were there and of alleged physical abuse. But the most egregious claim of all came when she accused him of throwing his own sexual “freak-offs” akin to the alleged ones thrown by Diddy.

“Tell them about the freak-off, Diddy Jr.,” she said in one clip per video captured by LiveBites. “You know what you did. You body-slammed me on the floor. Tell them the real you and why we’re here today?”

In the midst of this, Bagnerise also claimed that the singer threatened to call the police to remove her but it’s unclear from the video if she was actually removed.

However, less than a day later, Bagnerise took to her personal Instagram to issue an apology to her followers and others for “putting y’all in our business” and to the “Closer” singer for “how I communicated my frustration.”

“So I’m drinking my boba tea talking to my Dad on the phone, self-reflecting. & I’d like to apologize for putting yall in our business,” she wrote in a since-expired Instagram story post.

She continued:

“Emotions were heightened, and I want the best him to show up. But i understand you can’t make ppl feel you. I have good faith everything will come together. Full moon was out, cycle on, postpartum built with frustration and a lot underlining issues that we needed to be addressed. Trying to do that with the problem present made heightened emotions. I’m human. I hurt too. & i want the best for everyone. That’s all I was fussing for. Nothing more. A some understanding. I wouldn’t be fussing if I didn’t think he was capable of being the best. I show up different. Sorry for how I communicated my frustration with you @neyo, sincerely. Let’s do better.

This drama comes amid the release of the “Let Me Love You” singer’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert on Friday and one week after he revealed he was in a polyamorous relationship with two women.

After being spotted with his two girlfriends out in public by TMZ, Ne-Yo told the outlet: “I feel like in the realm of love and romance, you should let people do whatever the hell they want to do. Can’t see how it’s hurting anybody.”

When asked if he thought it should become legalized, he added, ““To be honest, I don’t need the government to tell me what it is I can and can’t do in my personal life.”

Netflix’s ‘Drawing Closer’ Teaser Offers a Glimpse into Heartfelt Japanese Romance –

[ad_1]

The highly-anticipated teaser for “Drawing Closer” has been unveiled, and it promises to be a tearjerker for audiences worldwide. Adapted from the heartwarming novel by Ao Morita, “Drawing Closer” is set to premiere on Netflix on June 27.

The novel, titled “Yomei Ichinen to Senkoku Sareta Boku ga, Yomei Hantoshi no Kimi to Deatta Hanashi” or “The story of how I, who was told I only had one year to live, met you, who only had half a year,” gained popularity on a self-publishing platform before being picked up by Poplar Publishing. Since then, the book series has sold over 450,000 copies and has become a viral sensation on social media.

The film follows the intertwined lives of Akito Hayasaka and Haruna Sakurai. Ren Nagase, in his first Netflix role, portrays Akito, a young man who has lost hope after a terminal diagnosis, until he meets Haruna, played by Natsuki Deguchi, who becomes his beacon of hope.

The teaser, directed by Takahiro Miki, beautifully captures the fleeting moments of joy between Akito and Haruna. Their smiles serve as a touching reminder to cherish the present moment. Tomoko Yoshida, known for “Let Me Eat Your Pancreas,” pens the screenplay, delicately exploring young love and life’s transient nature.

Seiji Kameda, who previously worked with Miki on “Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight,” composed the film’s emotional soundtrack. The teaser trailer features the song “Wakamono No Subete” by Fujifabric, perfectly capturing the essence of this bittersweet romance.

Ren Nagase expressed his thoughts on the completed film, saying, “I took on this role because I had never been in a classic love story like this. Looking back, I believe the film is filled with kindness. The songs in the film and the music by Kameda are wonderful. The final scene moved me to tears.”

Prepare your tissues and mark your calendars for June 27, when “Drawing Closer” streams exclusively on Netflix.

Tiffany Haddish Reveals She’s Suffered Eight Miscarriages

[ad_1]

From a childhood in foster care to the ups and downs of dating in Hollywood, actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish has never had a problem sharing the details of her personal life. Her new memoir, “I Curse You With Joy,” a follow-up to her 2017 bestseller “The Last Black Unicorn,” is sure to be loaded with even more revealing tidbits.

Haddish recently spoke with PEOPLE ahead of the release of her new book, which is scheduled to drop May 7. In the interview, she opened up about the physical and emotional pain she’s experienced living with endometriosis.

“I’m pretty sure the devil is real because the first day of my period, no matter what, the devil goes into overdrive. I feel like my life gets turned upside down,” Haddish said. “I be like, ‘Am I dying?’”

According to the World Health Organization, endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. The result can lead to inflammation and scar tissue inside the pelvic region. Symptoms can include painful periods, excessive bleeding and infertility.

The WHO says endometriosis affects nearly 10 percent of women and girls of reproductive age around the world. Haddish said her condition leaves her in extreme pain, which often causes her to faint.

“I don’t talk about it, but people just think I’m sleep everywhere, but I’m passing out because I’ll be in so much pain,” she said.

But along with the physical pain, Haddish revealed that she’s lived through eight miscarriages, including one in 2023 – each experience, Haddish said, was “devastating.”

“Every time I find out I’m pregnant, I’m like, ‘Don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t do nothin’,” she said. “Even if I don’t really want [the baby], I still try to give it a chance.”

While Haddish told PEOPLE she’s currently celibate, she’s not completely giving up on the idea of getting married and having children someday. “There is a part of me that wants to,” she said. “I’ve got all this love, I should give it to somebody who can grow with it.”

Netflix’s “Doctor Climax” Promises a Steamy Journey Back to the Taboo Era of the 70s –

[ad_1]

Netflix is set to tantalize audiences once again with its latest series, “Doctor Climax,” diving headfirst into the taboo world of sexuality in the 1970s. Following the success of “The Believers,” which sparked nationwide conversations on faith, this new show promises to ignite discussions around carnal desires and societal norms of yesteryear.

Directed by the talented duo of Kongdej Jaturanrasmee, renowned for the globally acclaimed “HUNGER,” and Pairach Khumwan, a mastermind behind the hit series “Girl From Nowhere,” “Doctor Climax” thrusts viewers into an era where open discussions about sex were strictly forbidden.

Set against the backdrop of societal repression, the series revolves around Doctor Nat, portrayed by Ter-Chantavit Dhanasevi, a dermato-venereologist turned unlikely columnist. Tasked with helming “The Climax Question,” a risqué advice column addressing everything from masturbation to STDs, Doctor Nat finds himself embroiled in a web of secrecy and desire.

As Doctor Nat delves deeper into the world of sexual exploration, he forms a forbidden connection with Linda, played by Goy-Arachaporn Pokinpakorn, the head of the publisher’s art department. Their burgeoning romance threatens not only Doctor Nat’s marriage to his seemingly perfect wife, Tukta, portrayed by Praew-Chermawee Suwanpanuchoke but also his family’s esteemed reputation.

The series boasts an exceptional ensemble cast, including Tonhon Tantivejakul as Permpol and Tob-Chaiwat Thongsang as Thong Tien, among others, each bringing their flair to the enthralling narrative.

For Kongdej Jaturanrasmee, “Doctor Climax” marks his directorial debut in television, with the series exploring poignant themes of humanity and society, intertwined with real-world events of the era. Collaborator Pairach Khumwan believes the show’s relevance lies in its ability to shed light on a bygone era while provoking modern-day reflections.

With each episode resembling a standalone cinematic experience, “Doctor Climax” promises to captivate audiences with its diverse storytelling techniques and thought-provoking narratives.

Prepare to be transported to a time where conversations about sex were whispered behind closed doors as “Doctor Climax” premieres exclusively on Netflix on June 13th, inviting viewers to explore the uncharted territories of desire and intimacy.

Amanda Seales Opens Up About Autism Diagnosis to Shannon Sharpe

[ad_1]

Activist and comedian Amanda Seales recently sat down with football star Shannon Sharpe for his podcast “Club Shay Shay. ” The three-hour long conversation hit on a myriad of topics — including one viewers likely didn’t expect.

While on the podcast, Seales opened up about recently being diagnosed with autism, and how that’s changed her perspective.

Amanda Seales Fires Off On Issa Rae, Insecure, Emmanuel Acho vs Angel Reese & Black Media Spaces

“I recently was diagnosed as someone who has autism spectrum disorder,” Seales told Sharpe on the podcast. “Which is very difficult to identify in Black women because of racism.”

Seales explained to Sharpe that her diagnosis has helped her better understand herself and shift her negative self-perspective. “When you take the test you’re like hold’up,” said the comedian, “I’ve been thinking my whole life that this was a problem.”

She said that some of her behaviors finally clicked, like her need to doodle for example. “The fact that I have to be doing things all of the time to be stimulated,” said Seales. “It’s literally called stimming.”

“These are small things that are indicative of like your brain functions in a very particular way. It’s also atypical to the way our society functions.”

Twitter/X has a lot to say about Seales’ revelations — including a large swath of support from people who appreciate her bravery in speaking out.

Several people came for Sharpe for questioning Seales’ diagnosis, among other things she discussed in the interview.

However, several are also questioning if Seales was formally diagnosed with autism or if she self-diagnosed. In an Instagram Live, following the interview, Seales said that she had not been “clinically diagnosed by a doctor.”

During the interview, Seales noted that Black women tend to have a harder time getting a diagnosis and culturally relevant support for a myriad of reasons. For one thing, as an article in The 19th explains, Black women and girls are generally excluded from autism research.

In fact, the research tends to exclude Black people and women all-together, meaning we don’t have a good sense of how autism manifests in people who aren’t white men.

As for Seales, the diagnosis appears to have helped her understand herself better, and that’s a win!

5 reasons to see Alicia Keys’ musical ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ on Broadway

[ad_1]

An electrifying new musical has come to Broadway. The semi-autobiographical show from Alicia Keys opened over the weekend, and we’re breaking down five reasons the show is a must-see event this Broadway season.

"Hell's Kitchen" Broadway Opening Night

Come for the hits

First and foremost: “Hell’s Kitchen” is a jukebox musical, and an excellent one at that. Unlike others like it, the show does not simply rest on Keys’ immense catalog to succeed. Instead, it uses the songs to tell a larger, grander story, often retooling and reshaping the numbers contextually and even sonically (“Fallin’, one of Keys’s signature songs, specifically stands out in a showstopping Act II moment).

A moving story

The show takes audiences on a thrilling coming-of-age adventure set in 1990s New York City. From the opening number, you feel transported back in time, following young Ali (Maleah Joi Moon) as she navigates her first love, her journey as an artist, and her unexpected loss in one of the most pivotal moments of her life. Moon injects endless ferocity and tenderness into the protagonist, who pushes up against her responsibilities as a student and a daughter in an ever-changing world.

Her mother Jersey, played by the marvelous Shoshana Bean, is another pivotal part of the show’s narrative, serving as another entry point for the audience. The character shines as a moving portrait of a mother doing everything she can to protect and raise her daughter while reckoning with her own past.

Thrilling choreography

The show features dazzling choreography from Camille A. Brown, who is known for her acclaimed work on the stage in productions like “Choir Boy,” “Once on This Island” and more. The true heartbeat of the show, Brown’s choreography takes us from scene to scene, supercharging the story with energy that impresses all the way to the last seat in the house.

Recommended Stories

Unparalleled voices

Keys’ stunning music is sung by some of the strongest voices currently on the Great White Way. Moon and Bean both bring down the house with glorious vocals that fill the entire theater, handling Keys’ greatest hits and newer offerings with care and specificity. Her songs reach new heights due to the supporting performances in the show as well, including Brandon Victor Dixon, who has the audience in the palm of his hand from the second he gloriously begins singing Keys’ song “Not Even the King.”

An authentically New York experience

Overall, the experience is an uplifting and moving one, as Ali’s journey can’t help but leave you filled with joy, hope, and an immense love for the city that she calls home. When the eventual performance of Keys’ hit “Empire State of Mind” comes, it is earned, as the entire show itself is a celebration of New York City and the dreamers, lovers, teenagers, and people who inhabit it every day.
