Do We Need Tyler Perry’s Adaptations of The Bible?

Just when you thought Netflix had done it all, the streaming giant announces that it’s partnering with Tyler Perry and Devon Franklin (“Flamin’ Hot”) to produce faith-based movies.

Perry already has an existing deal with the streamer, which sees him write, direct and produce films like “Mea Culpa” and “Six Triple Eight.”

Per the official synopsis: “‘R&B’ is a modern-day retelling of the story of Ruth and Boaz, one of the most iconic love stories in the Bible. Set in Tennessee, ‘R&B’ tells the story of a young woman who escapes the Atlanta music scene to care for an elderly widowed woman and in the process finds the love of her life and gains the mother she never had.”

“R&B” is being written by Mike Elliott (“Brown Sugar”) and Cory Tynan (“Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day”), but you know Perry won’t be able to resist putting his own fingerprints on the story.

Perry’s films often feature faith as a central characteristic of the leads and Franklin is no stranger to producing successful faith-based projects. However, it’s no secret that the quality of the Madea filmmaker’s movies and TV series are questionable.

Seriously, “Mea Culpa” was shockingly bad and led to a firestorm of hilarious reactions following its premiere. The unexplainable craziness of “The Oval” often has viewers wondering why Perry’s stories are so overbooked with unnecessary twists.

Most Black filmmakers will never reach the unimaginable heights Tyler Perry has, but at a certain point, we’d like to see his stories evolve into less predictable, less messy dramas. Maybe that’s coming with “Six Triple Eight” and “R&B,: but he’s given us no proof that we should get our hopes up.

Anytime Black creatives get a “multi-year, multi-picture first-look deal” like this it’s a big win, but we’d be lying if we said “Tyler Perry’s The Bible” doesn’t make us nervous.
